Thanks!
This week I did the Virago cylinder and cylinder heads. This means valves, camshafts, but also pistons and piston rings. And offcourse everything that you bump into like bended studs.
I am so sorry for the audio in this video, but I had the mic turned off... So you have to listen to enhanced camera mic sound...
Keep informed by also following me on Facebook! Chiefpep

I always use a dab of grease to help the collets stick to tge valve stem when reinstalling the valves. Makes it way easier.

Pep, for clean yours upper side of pistons (head), you need to use a Oven Clean Foam, apply and wait for a 10 minutes, if are not completely clean, can use Carburetor Cleaner or a product called Schnell-Reiniger from Liqui-Moly, is very aggressive with carbon rust. Have a nice day and best wishes from Copiapó, Chile.

Thanks Pipo. But I basically don't clean the upper pistons. There is no nead to. It improves compression, which always helps a little for performance... You probably don't feel it, but there is no need to clean them very well.

There is actually pretty much difference between camshaft #1 and #2. If you inadvertently cross the camshafts the engine actually works backwards, meaning it will suck from exhaust and blow to carbs. Been there, seen that, done that.. :)

Hi, good demo, by the way,. I have a 1983 vx750 and having taken the cylinder head off I notice there is NOT a head gasket, just the rubber ring that fits around the timing chain channel . is this correct???? Regards Dave,
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Probably there is a gasket ring around the cylinder circle. It's completely pressed in. You can pry it out and have to replace it.

Hi, good job! What is the side axial clearance between the rocker arm and the cilinder head? Mine is about 0.3mm and there is nocking around 1060-70rpm. I think to reduce it with washers. What do you mean? Greetings from Bulgaria!
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's smart to put washers in... The workshopmanual should have those clearances and tolerances noted down.

Thank you for the quick reply, but my question was! to confirm that there is NO gasket between the cylinder and the head, just a face to face fit, Yes? I know that the O ring is correct. One more quick question when I'm here, what should I expect as a good compression test reading? I'm only getting 80psi rear and 50psi front. Dave.

Hey so I can’t install both lower halves of the cylinder heads before doing the #1 and #2 cylinder heads? I’m asking cuz I’m waiting for the top ends to be done at the mechanic but I’d like to keep working on the rest until then. Also. Is there a proper front and rear designation for the lower cylinder heads? They look the same and I don’t see any markings on them.
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 6 жыл бұрын
Alex Fluckiger Alex Fluckiger well there are numbers at them. The fact that they have makes that probably something is different. For instant the cast. The rear gets warmer than the front... You can start building the lower parts and insert the pistons if you want. The only thing is when you want to turn the engine to find a tdc the cylinders will probably go off together with the piston which is very anoying.

Hello Chief. I am assembling my xv1100 and my outer valve springs are variable pitch ones and I did not note which way they go in when I removed them. Do you have any suggestions about the direction? Thanks a lot

@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 2 жыл бұрын
Is niet te zeggen. Maar nieuwe zuigerveren helpt altijd enorm. Heb je ergens last van? Kom je vermogen tekort of rookt de motor extreem? Wat is de reden dat je dit bent gaan controleren?

ey chiefpep, if i want to do a top end rebuilt, do i have to put in TDC for the front or rear?
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 6 жыл бұрын
Joshua Tambauan I explain in these video's at the right time and in the right order which cylinder has to be at TDC at what time. So yes for rebuilding it is important but for the timing of your camshaft it is the most important. This is another video when I put the cylinder heads on. Listen and watch that video carefully for this operation.

There is an black oily deposit at the end of the tailpipe from the front cylinder on my 1990 xv 700 it was spluttering/backfiring -now wont, is it rings /seals what do you think? the smell of burnt oil is terrible
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 5 жыл бұрын
🤔 Very hard to say. As far as I can tell from this explanation it sounds like things don't burn well. Try new spark plugs, make sure they are adjusted conform the guidelines and try 98 gasoline for a while instead of 95. The 95 now a days are way worse than back in 1990...

you forgot to polish the piston top full of carbon 🤣
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 3 жыл бұрын
Never polish that. A) it's competely usesless, in one run it all will be back but more importantly B) a little bit of extra compression is always nice to have. Alternative way is to leave your gasket to get extra compression. I am not building a racer so that won't be necessary. But the bit of carbon won't hurt at all!

Hello, I'm in dire need of help on my 97 Yamaha Virago 535!! I tore the engine down and rebuilt it and now I am reassembling. I am now trying to set the valve timing on the cam and can not get the cam sprocket notch to line up with the mark on the the cylinder head...it just won't! I am able to get close but as soon as I put tension on the chain it turns the cam and my timing's off. I've tried everything but I cannot set this cam timing, would anybody have any idea?
