This is the video I needed. Just got a new guitar with this style pegs and I had no idea how to use them properly. In 36 years of guitar, never had them before.

Actually changed the strings on my Squier CV 50s Tele with vintage tuners from 10th to 11th in a few minutes and it worked beautifully! Thank you for sharing! Cheers Kurt

Excellent tip! First time I've seen that and so much easier than measuring against the tuner pegs.

You don’t have to back the string up two frets 😃 you just clip it off two tuning posts up. Easier and less chance of a measuring error. You can back up the B and E strings if you like, but by then you’ll have an excellent idea where to cut them.

These tuners are such a pain in the butt though, I bought a new strat this week and it is the first time I encountered this type of tuner. I get it if the guitar is actually vintage but there are obviously far easier and better solutions available today

You could go for 2.5 frets of slack if using 9s or 8s. Depends if the guitarist needs/prefers a bit more wrapping. This is the most fool proof and best way to string up any guitar with these tuners. Thanks Rich.

I use 10's, are 2 frets enough?
@SPNKr16

@@Atomicgherkin I haven't restrung on vintage slotted tuners in a couple of years, you'll have to try it and get back to me. Otherwise 2.5 frets of slack should work as I remember at this time.

You can also use it like a regular tuner with an over and under wrap. first half wrap over the string then wind under the string which squeezes on the string with no crossover of wraps.

Or just pull the sting up 2 x tuning pegs and cut, works just the same
@jansimmelman267

Yes,you're correct ! The distance between 2 tuning pegs is about the same as the distance from the nut to the second fret.

I wish I’d have seen this earlier today. Just got an old strat and hadn’t dealt with those tuners….snapped off a high E Superslinky when I was tuning it up. I’m used to my Grover’s. Very helpful video…glad I bought 4 sets of strings the other day! Thanks, man!

I am going to try this on my man newly acquired Strat. I like this method better than the "two and a half tuning pegs" as there's no guessing when you come to the B and high E strings.

At 2:44 please note exactly how he is applying pressure and pulling back on the string as he applies the tension by turning the pegs. Man oh man - this is SO important. If you do not do it this way the dang string will pop out which really gets old

How in the hell do you do the winding at 2:40 everytime I do it my string just goes outward and the wraps stick to the bottom of the tuning peg I hate restringing so f*****g much
@rmenga
@rmenga 3 жыл бұрын
What I first do (and I guess I should have showed this in the video) is after putting the string in the tuner post, I bend the string over the slot so it won't pop out while winding. After that, when I start winding, I pull on the string purposely to give it tension so it slides up the tuner post while winding (you can see me doing this in the video), otherwise I would have the same problem you're having now where the string would "flop out" and just stay at the bottom and not wrap around the post correctly.

Man, I hate this type of tuning system... Especially the thinner strings have the tendency to jump out as you're coiling them.
@newmanfertig886

Vintage tuners are the best. If they slip out it’s because you’re not adding pressure to the string as you wrap it.
