When we get asked about how we winter camp, the answer is usually "go south"! But, with 2020 being the odd year it is, we are staying north longer than usual. We've been in Indiana, Ohio, and North Carolina for quite a few cold spells this winter, so we wanted to share what we've learned. 🥶

25:00 A thing that a lot of people don't think of is that if there is snow around, set the tank on the ground and pack it in snow... The 32°F snow is PLENTY warm enough to keep your tank gassing well.

That snow angel move may be helpful to do in water in case anyone is drowning and does not know how to swim. Ideally, every kid should get free swimming lessons, every day, to be ready in case they are stuck in a flooded area. 2/11/2023

Got an added tip for you...we are in So Cal, but we do RV in the winter months (which can get into the 20s or 30s). A couple of RV's ago we found out about heated mattress pads for the bed. These things are a life-saver, especially if you're like us and hate getting into a cold-azz bed. In the past, we had Weekend Warrior Toyhaulers, and we since we did a lot of boondocking, we ran our genny quite a bit, but we were able to turn on the mattress pad heaters early then turn off the genny when we got to bed, and it was toasty warm all night. With full hookups, this is a no-brainer- easiest way to stay warm in the coach. We now have a GD Reflection 320MKS with a king size bed, and the first item we bought for it was the heated mattress pad, and it's just heaven to get into bed. Now that we've replaced the t-stat with a Micro Air, we can wake up with appropriate heat and enjoy our 5vr in the morning. The fireplace does a pretty good job of helping.

Wow! You two camped in it freezing cold just so you could speak with authority on the subject! Now that’s integrity! When you’ve had enough suffering, come down south. People up north don’t realize how badly they’re suffering because their brains freeze and thaw so often that they just stay put. Come back south before the damage sets in!

Was camping in a rv park outside Dayton Ohio in 1984 with my wife and our 4 and 7yr old boys...we had a 1976 27ft Holiday Ramble Presidential trailer...in a major winter storm it got down to minus 18 degrees for 4 nights....we were their for 3 weeks..I got 2 100lbs cylinders of propane delivered day one and had a small space heater in the bath room to keep it toasty ...I had a great time 4 wheeling in the storm that droped 3 ft of snow and even pulled out a wrecker that was stuck with my Warn Super Wench on the front of my Suburban....My boys still talk about traveling up north that winter with there bikes frozen to the propane tanks on the front of the RV by road slush flung up from our tow vehicle... I actually towed the trailer at 50 mph for over 100miles in a storm and felt very safe with the wind behind me and in 4 wheel drive I was heavy enough that stoping was not a issue...There were no other cars on the Interstate and I found out why when I got off in Evansville Ind. .from a state trooper.....The Interstate 70 had been closed for 4hrs ...I had it to myself and didn't know....We made it to our engagement that night and were Wintered in there in a parking lot with shore power and water for two days .....Winter camping and travel are fun if your prepared and have friends around near by..!!!!

Totally amazing post guys. I found it very informative and entertaining at the same time. Your information on the performance of propane in specific temperatures was very well researched. The video had a great set up and also, a complete layout that covered all of what a RVer needs to know about winter camping. I loved it. I have been a huge fan for over a year now and will continue to watch with anticipation. P.S. Daisy is the cutest dog ever. And a pretty good watch dog, especially if you need a little noise maker... Love the channel y’all, as always great content and knowledge! When you were talking about the heat tracing hose, I would like to share that my wife and I bought a heat tracing plug in cable at Home Depot and attached it to our flex hose, I did cut the outer cloth material only at the ends of the hose and fished the heat line through the length of the hose and so far it’s been good to us, for all material was about $60 to put it together, but lol I had to learn the hard way with stiff water hoses first to develop a plan. Happy camping y’all! Thank you for sharing!

I have a 5 season RV.... and have camped in CT were I had a few travel assignments (healthcare) for winter (and where I grew up)..... 4 secrets: insulated heated hose is rated down to -40 degrees, was working for me at -20, "big boy tank" 100 pound tank from local gas company was great! Use a humidifier, moist air retains more heat! And skirting is DEFINITELY worth it! There is an amish company out of PA that will drive to you and custom fit skirting..... saves a tone of money on propane, so definitely worth it ! :-) Good luck and enjoy!!!

Great advice. Living in Alberta, if we want to camp in April and also into October, we have to be prepared for around 10F plus windchill. Your tips are excellent and basically mirror our preparations. Although we have a heated underbelly, if it is really cold, I will leave an electric inspection light running in our wet bay as that does have limited insulation.

These are really great tips. We especially appreciate the one of having to offset the propane furnace according to the electric fireplace. I bet that could lead to some problems if your propane furnace is constantly shutting off due to being "tricked." It might be nice and toasty warm inside the camper, but the underbelly could be slowly getting colder. Thank you Chad and Tara!
