Installing Pontoon Vinyl Flooring on ALUMINUM DECK

This has been one of those things discussed frequently, but this is the first video I've shared on the topic. When installing vinyl flooring on an aluminum of composite surface (non-plywood) you must use a solvent-based adhesive as typical indoor/outdoor flooring adhesives can't cure between the two non-porous surfaces. This video talks about that process and shows how to install the vinyl on your aluminum decked pontoon boat.

Been waiting for you to do this video! We replaced old carpet, with the new teak vinyl. I would not do the removal process again! Ended up using a 4” wheel sander, again not easy and you are correct about it melting the old glue. We used ATT 390 Marine and exterior adhesive, non flammable. Good for aluminum and Marine grade plywood subfloor. It’s a glue, not a contact adhesive, soo much easier to use than contact adh. The floor has been down for 2 months and is secure and beautiful. Love your videos!

Thanks for sharing the adhesive you used and your results…I’m sure that install process moved along much faster and smoother! Pontoon Stuff advises their customers to use a solvent based option which is why I wanted to show the process. They’re playing it safe with that advice because when done correctly the solvent based adhesive will surely hold their flooring down for the long haul!

Definitely worth it!! Just get it cleaned really well and work on it in chunks…you’ll get it done in an afternoon!

Question - My 1995 aluminum deck has many small holes from various mounts over the years. Some water does seep/splash thru when running. Will this affect the flooring or the glue? Thanks - your videos are outstanding.

Once the new flooring is glued down it really shouldn’t impact it negatively. I would consider adding underskinning to be safe, or add silicone from the bottom on places that water could potentially splash or spray up

Hey Tom. Is this the same glue you would use on marine grade plywood that has been treated with a sealer? Thanks!

I would advise against sealing and if the marine grade treated plywood. It needs to breathe and dry when it gets wet. If it’s untreated and you sealed it then yes, you’ll likely need a solvent based adhesive (as long as it doesn’t interact negatively with the sealant). If you’re installing carpet and not vinyl you could use a regular carpet glue as the carpet breathes enough for the glue to cure

Is vinyl on aluminum hot in the sun?

It shouldn't be any different than when it's installed on wood. A hot day in the 90s under direct sun it'll get a bit hot, but just splash it down with water and it'll be good to go for a couple more hours. We've had black powder coated aluminum trim on our boat and it never felt very hot to the touch even on hot sunny days.
