3 QUESTIONS: (1) IF THE WOOD ISN'T TOO BAD, HOW ABOUT JUST FLIPPING IT OVER? (2) ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THE PRODUCT TUFF COAT TO USE INSTEAD OF THE MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE VINYL, AND (3) WOULD IT BE BENEFICAL TO INSTALL CORRUGATED TIN UNDERNEATH TO KEEP WATER FROM SPLASHING UP AND CREATING MORE DRAG? THANK SO MUCH FOR YOUR AWESOME VIDEOS.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Ай бұрын
Great questions! 1) marine grade treated plywood is void free on ONE side. Flipping it would move knots and voids to the top where you’d see or feel them. It would also be taking the surface rot from the top and be moving it to the bottom, still shortening the life of the wood. If you go through that much trouble to flip the wood you should just replace it to make it another 20+ years of worry free use. 2) I painted the interior walls of my aluminum jet boat I built (video series is on the channel) and I LOVE IT! I know they make a wood coating too, but haven’t tried it. I think it could be great, but go with a light color to avoid the floor getting too hot! 3) We install 0.063” sheet aluminum on a lot of tritoons as “underskin” to protect the bottom and crossmembers from spray/waves and quiet/smooth the ride out. Works great! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thoughts on removing old carpet, laying 1/4" ply over top then installing vinyl floor over the "new" deck? This would be for an old pontoon houseboat, 37' overall. Looking to firm up the soft spots on the outside decks without doing a full tear out. Attempting to complete the work while on the water, in the marina.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 5 ай бұрын
That's a tricky spot to be in. I've seen someone add 1/4" plywood on top of an older rotten deck and it wasn't pretty. The 1/4" basically fell into pieces as we uninstalled everything. If a total tear off isn't an option, I would personally try to go with aluminum sheet instead of another material that will rot. Because we work on customers' boats we have to do it the best way possible so that we can guarantee the end result. I haven't tinkered around much with quick fixes like that so I'm not a ton of help on this one!

You could go with a CCA treated plywood that’s not Marine Grade…it’ll just have knots and voids in the surface you may feel under your feet…not a huge deal for a work boat that you’ll likely wear shoes on anyway. All the boats I’ve seen that were in freshwater have had no issues with CCA treated plywood reacting with the aluminum of the frame. Definitely mixed reactions about that out there…I can only speak from my experience.

Why not use tape on all the aluminum rails to isolate them from the treated wood, is there a downside other than cost? Thanks for all the tips and tricks, your years of experience is invaluable to us DIY’s! What do you think of priming the (non treated) marine grade plywood sheets before installation as an additional waterproofing measure?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching the channel! It wouldn't hurt to put tar tape on all of the crossmembers, however it's just not usually necessary, especially in freshwater. The reaction between treated plywood and the aluminum is minimal in my experience. Even the big pontoon brand manufacturers use tape only on the seams. I only recommend installing marine grade CCA treated plywood as most other "marine grade" plywood isn't build to get wet constantly. If you MUST use an untreated marine grade plywood I would definitely consider coating it or sealing it to prevent rot.

@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
If using Marine Grade CCA Treated plywood there is no need to seal or coat the wood, top nor bottom. In fact, one could argue that the wood needs to breathe to dry out after being wet AND the wood must breathe to allow adhesive to cure under new vinyl flooring which does not breathe to allow curing of flooring adhesive.

Thanks for watching! It's common for us to use a mix of the self tapping screws and stainless deck bolts...deck bolts on the seams and self tappers everywhere else. I've torn down over 60 boats in the last couple of years and I've found that the bigger self tappers like the zylan coated ones DO NOT tend to loosen. The only boat I've had loose self tappers on was a newer (2011 I believe) Berkshire, and it had much lighter self tappers that honestly appeared to be stripped out from the factory. Here's a video of the 3" deck bolt, but it'll show you how I counter sink the head so that nothing is felt from the top side: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qd9-qrZlksfZoIk.html

I’ve been apprehensive to replace the flooring because of needing to reposition the furniture/helm etc correctly. I’ve not seen any videos on how folks do that to configure the mounts how they were on the old wood after reflooring. Is that pretty straightforward? Any tips/tricks? I know a lot of your stuff you reconfigure, but in the case of using the same fencing and furniture. Use the old boards and holes as templates?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
I love this question! I will definitely do a video about it on the next boat we restore using the same railings. In a nutshell, I would measure your spacing of the front and rear decks if applicable, and record the measurements so that when you reinstall the railings you can match the old spacing. From there, I install all new plywood and RARELY use old boards as templates for holes, unless they’re for transom fuel tank access or other critical parts that are being reinstalled. I use old boards as templates for rear deck cutouts or front deck shapes/sizes. I simply make all new holes once the seats and helm are reinstalled. Once your railings are in place your old furniture will match back up to the railings where you can fasten them into the new floor. I’ll make a video on the approach to reinstalling railings when I get the next chance. Thanks for the question and hope this helps for now!

I can’t say much on ac-c as I’ve never used it. I think those corrosive factors are multiplied in extreme environments like saltwater and areas with high electrolysis. Tom, so this wood that was put on by the manufacture was pressure treated plywood ? I am currently in the process of rebuilding a pontoon boat and was going to use pressure treated from Home Depot, just wanted to make sure im not doing a big no no.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
99.9% of the boats we restore have pressure treated plywood. We use the CCA treated plywood from PontoonStuff.com. It’s marine grade which means there’s a smooth side free of voids and knots. You could use treated from Home Depot, but it’ll have knots in it that you’ll need to fill or you’ll feel them once in a while under your feet. There are folks out there who swear treated wood will eat right through aluminum because of the reaction between the chemicals and metals. I’ve never seen it be an issue on all the boats I’ve restored. Maybe some super minor pitting or some dusty residue on the metal, but that’s all. I trust it enough to use treated on all my own boats.

I would like to see re carpeting a boat with aluminum floors
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
One of these days we will tackle one to show the process. As a business we don’t do them because it’s very difficult to guarantee the long term outcome when laying new vinyl flooring. The aluminum surface has to be as perfectly clean as possible including removing old adhesive and carpet backing. Then a solvent based adhesive must be used where the process and timing is significantly different than gluing to plywood. Carpet isn’t as tricky as it can breathe to allow more traditional adhesives to cure, but we’ve never laid new carpet on a pontoon restoration. It’s always been vinyl because of the long list of qualities like….it’s low maintenance, no staining, fast drying, quick to clean, etc.

Would it be ok to water seal the wood beforehand?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
Great question, and a common one at that...short answer is no. When using a marine grade TREATED plywood there is no need to seal the wood, in fact you want the wood to breathe in order to dry out and prevent rot. Water will always find a way in over time, even if sealed, and I'd rather that wood be able to dry back out than have moisture trapped for any amount of time. I've never seen a boat from the pontoon manufacturers with sealed wood...that's probably the best trend to follow!

@tomspontoons 11 ай бұрын
There's a video somewhere on our channel where we found that exact scenario...can't say if it was marine grade, but the lauan was falling into pieces as we tried to peel it up. Our approach doesn't work for everyone, but because we're doing it for customers (and not our own boat) we replace everything to do it right the first time so that it'll last another 20+ years. Yes, treated marine grade plywood isn't cheap, but it should give decades of use without a second thought.
