Installing windows is easy! Well, maybe. But if you do it right, it's not exactly simple. In this episode, the off grid mountain cabin we call the Spur Cabin, gets brand new windows! I will go through the process step by step, and give you the information you need to properly install windows on your own cabin...or house!
Yes, the method I use is essentially the same technique one would use on a permanent, permitted home.
With window installation, it's all about the proper seal needed to keep moisture OUT. I use the products to accomplish just that, in this video. From the right tapes to the correct caulk, I cover what's needed, what's used, and what may be going a bit too far. Check it out and let me know if you've ever seen a better, more entertaining, more comprehensive window-installation video. I bet you haven't!
Thanks for watching ‪@LifeontheMoose‬ ! Be sure to stop by the channel headquarters and peruse the big library of awesome videos.

I get it, working alone is so peaceful. No one rushing you, no one slowing you down. Working at your own pace and no one questioning the way you're doing things, I enjoy following your progress. All your projects look spectacular. Your wife also adds her good taste to the place when it's close to the finish. Something I've learned over the years......if you make a goof, don't point it out. Most people will never notice. If they do, then that;s okay. I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for putting it out there. Oh, I almost forgot, if you ever wanna stop by to give me a hand, on my projects I'd appreciate it!

Love your work and videos. For future reference use a rubber squeegee for tape around windows it makes it easier to apply. Another trick is to use shims under window ledger to give the tilt you want.

I live in rain country so I do two layers of tape on openings, one under and one over. One thing I highly recommend is to use screws to install windows especially when working alone. It is so easy to change the hang or later on if it becomes necessary years down the road to change the window out. Simpson Strong Tie among many make pancake head or washer head as some call them that are close to as flush as a roofing nail and they come in stainless. It is also easy to back it off a half turn if you overtighten. Most manufacturers tell you not to nail tight as the vinyl needs room to expand and contract. The other nice part is the window can be removed during a remodel and someone else can use it because the flanges aren't destroyed trying to get the nails out.

All good stuff! I’ve probably used screws more in the past, but wanted to change it up this time. It’s amazing how many people have different methods. I appreciate you watching!

I have seen the evolution of window setting over the years. First it was a silicone bead. Then it was a silicone bead and flashing tape. Now its all that plus the window flashing tape. I even seen guys add liquid flashing to top it all off. I guess I'm old school...a bead of silicone and some flashing tape over the flange. Good to go.

The windows need all corner holes and at least every 3rd hole nailed. The caulking isnt necessary at all. If youre going to do it though it should be put on the window itself. Right over the holes so when you nail it it seals. You're supposed to use roofing nails for a window too, much fater heads. Sealing the windows is done from the inside aftr install. Good old can of spray foam. The window should never be touching the RO, it should always be shimmed. That way you can seal it with the spray foam.

when you build your home think about using the Japanese technique Sho Shogi Ban technique around the lower portions of doors and windows along with the modern moisture deterrents. My sons home built in 1930 had this technique used and the lower corner framing were not degraded as is common in most homes. food for thought. my2cents

Great job! What a ball it is to build a cabin! ZIP Tape, in order to bond properly needs to be pressure rolled. That what activate the adhisives. Experts will tell you that all windows leak - it's just a matter of when. Siding and house wraps are not waterproof. House wrap is for stopping air infiltration. I never understood house wrap co. wanting to wrap their product in to the openings. Especially with all of the staples and nail penetrations after the siding is installed. I believe if water gets behind the wrap (and it just may) it can make its way onto the raw wood framing - though I do add a layer of flashing tape on the stool and the lower corners.. I cut back the wrap, making a flap on top, the way he did but the sides I cut 2 inches shy of the opening, caulk 3 side (not bottom) and install the window. Flash tape it in a shingle effect but not flash taping the bottom. You want tAnd then tape the tyvek with its own tape to the flashing tap. I know, I know.. that's not how the manufactures describe.. It just makes more sense to me.. On more layer of defense.

I replaced a kitchen window this summer in my house that was installed in 1990 (it was dated). Marvin crank out style. No tape, nothing. Just shoved in the hole and nailed. It was all solid, zero rot. This is in Wisconsin-super hot humid summers and frigid polar winters - i will add i have big overhangs (ranch style home/hip roof/24 inch overhangs). All of these windows from 1990 are junk. Its sad this stuff doesn't last long--these were wood interior/aluminum clad exterior.

Great program friend. I really enjoy your project. In your attempt to not trap water you have actually introduced moisture. If air can penetrate the opening, then moisture has been introduced. It's in the air, it's called humidity. The window should be sealed on all sides. Code in most places will also require you to nail every hole as well as low-e and other requirements such as double pane glass, storm windows, etc.. Thanks sir for your cabin! Enjoy in good health and spirit! I sense the peace of your space, especially the wooden gate area and the outside fire pit.

You are not supposed to seal all 4 side. Every manufacturer and installer advise to seal the sides and top. The bottom is left open. Foam is then added around all sides in the interior and caulked to stop any moisture getting past the window. Sealing the bottom flange would only trap water and root the wall.
@LifeontheMoose

To me a non construction guy, it does seem logical to apply the silicone, flange and sealing tape to the wrap instead of the building. Like putting a bandaid on your shirt for the cut on your arm underneath. But I guess you can't install the windows before the wrap.

are you going to use backer rod around the window?

Not in the plan. I don’t think it’s absolutely needed here. Thanks for watching!

I am not sure, but you might be wrong about sealing up the bottom of the window with a bead of silicone. Capillary action can let water climb up and in narrow spaces. A bead of silicon would block any water from climbing up a narrow space.

Hopefully we can disagree and you’ll still watch! I get that logic, for sure. If it was a more consistently wet environment, I may have been swayable. I appreciate you tuning in!

is there a reason you chose to nail in the windows vs screws?
@LifeontheMoose

Mostly the flatness of the shingle nail head, with the thought of leveling the trim. I’ve certainly used screws in the past though.

I just put in three 3x4' sliders in my shed/office build this week. I used GRK cabinet.pan head screws...every other hole, none within 3" of corner. Will you be taping the tyvek seams?
@LifeontheMoose

I will not be taping those seams. I just don’t think it’s crucial under these circumstances. I appreciate the input!

I think that Zip flashing tape is not the same thing as the stretching tape. The real stretch stuff is waaaaay more stretchy. Still made by zip though.

Hey silly question maybe people, but the tape Patrick used at the bottom/inside of the window (before the window was installed) is that the same tape he used at the sides and top once the window was in? Looks different to me and trying to build my list of materials! Thanks
@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose 5 ай бұрын
The two are different. The sides and top are a peel and stick with minimal stretchiness. The bottom sill tape is a Zip product (I believe) with great stretchiness around corners.

I assume you will shutter these windows and door. In "snow country" of the Sierra Nevada, all our cabin doors and windows are shuttered. Wouldn't have a cabin without them. Vandalism, bears and snow sliding off easily break glass.
@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose 8 ай бұрын
I thought about it, and I don’t think we will do that. Not that it’s a bad idea! We have bears, but a sparse population here…plus, no long term heat or food in the cabin. We get snow, but not the Sierra Nevada kind of snow. Vandals are always a possibility, but this isn’t a place one can stumble upon. I can’t safeguard against every scenario and still have it affordable. I really appreciate you watching and commenting!
