Great job on the review Dave! The Instamic sounds a bit too heavy in the high frequencies, especially for voices with a good bit of sibilance. But definitely an interesting product and hopefully they can fine-tune the voicing on future iterations.

Sorry I should have given you a shout out in the video for the silhouette idea I stole from you. :)

Haha - No way, I don't have silhouettes copyrighted or trademarked! Good job on the review and very nice job on the silhouette - you pulled it off very effectively. :)

Everybody seems to dislike the Instamic compared to the Rode, but I genuinely think it sounded better than the Rode for pretty much everything except the low low tones and the high highs, but even those sounded great with EQ.

Hi Dave, thanks so much for putting together this review. You are always doing a great job. Love the silhouette idea. May I steal it for our future product updates?! :-) Thanks Ben for your support and contribution to this review. Very much appreciated. Two suggestions that may help. To reduce the harshness on the mids highs I suggest wearing the mic upside down, with the mic capsules facing down. It is an omnidirectional mic and it will grab the sound in a more gentle and smooth way. To camouflage the mic we have covers in multiple colors. I hope it helps. Thanks again, Dave and Ben! Best, Michele Baggio - Instamic CEO

I would be really interested to hear the difference in frequencies with this suggestion.

Love the product @instamic, but it's a bit sketchy on being able to download to the desktop. Sometimes (Mac) you see the drive, sometimes not. Also, how do you format the thing? Sounds good though.

A lot of top freq harshness on instamic just my opinion

Oh my gosh, it’s so strange how “familiar” the Videomic Pro sounds! That’s how I’ve mostly heard your voice. The Instamic seems to sound better though.

Thought the same thing, so use to hearing his voice with less treble (but I like the instamic better) To me both have their pros and cons. One is a little too emphasizing on the treble while the other sounds like the reverb and bass dominate the voice, but no harshness.

Nice. What a great mic to have on hand for those just in case moments.

The use of a silhouette for this review was such a great idea, worked so well and very nicely executed as usual! First time hearing about these Instamic's!!

Yea. It was great when Curtis Judd started doing that years ago.

using the silhouette did exactly as you suggested it would and I must say was genius. I admire your teaching abilities and you technical expertise. Thank you for your hard work and attention to detail. I want to be more like you. God bless. Oh and the instamic sounded best to me.

Not certain if I like the Instamic. Seems harsher to my ears.

Hi Dave, I follow your content regularly. I remember your mentioning of idea to put drop in filter system in mirrorless cameras. I thought that was brilliant and very useful suggestion. It seems Canon heard your voice and EOS R now has that system in adapters they are going to provide !!!

Most notable thing for me is the Rhode picks up a lot more room reverb, but that may just be mic placement.

I used to think the Rode mic sounded good..but when comparing it to the Insta and Senheisser...it sounds awful. Maybe it's my ears but I really dislike it.

Agreed. Watching this on my shitty phone audio, Rode sounded muddy and cheap

After watching 5 videos on this mic no one answers the questions: 1) What type of battery does it use? 2) How long will it record? 3) How can you attach it to a hand held mic for wedding toasts?

I don't like both of them. Instamic have too many (CRAZY!) high frequencies and not enough low frequencies. Rode capture middle frequencies (what's why the sound is so muddy). They both have to be equalized. Sennheiser much closer to the right sound but you have to clip it in the right way so it will not touch clothes.

The insta mic sounds like it is doing some weird processing within itself. There is weird like crackliness or crunchy-ness to it throughout the frequency range. Like a compression or sample rate or noise reduction thing is going on

Honestly I love the instamic. Also holy crap those things are cheap compared to my senheisers. I might need to get some

Sennheiser has some snap, crackle, pop. Frayed wire, or maybe some crimping?

Wow. The silhouette is so clean. Green screen?

If you look closely you can see highlights on Dave's face, so it's not a green screen. I'm not sure if there's any editing stuff going on or if there's just that much backlighting.

I added a ton of contrast to get this look, I think it worked well for this type of video.
