I think it's wild that Nashville goes from rebuild mode to signing 3 30+ year olds in the span of a year in an attempt to be more competitive after going on a surprise run late in the season. This will either be spectacular or a disaster, little in between!

I think these were great signings. What Nashville did without a true top line last year was impressive. They definitely have a small window now. They could be a conference final team. Again that really doesn’t mean anything but still it’s an improvement.

I wholeheartedly disagree on guentzel not being an upgrade on stamkos, I think he absolutely is. He’s a consistent 80+ point guy who has a lengthy history of putting up impact numbers. Stamkos, while still being an impactful player is on the back 9 and lost the ability to be a full time centre. Taking the emotion of losing a franchise great out of the equation I think the lightening nailed this.

Agreed. Guentzel over Stamkos, even though Ive always liked Stammer. His best days are behind him, or are about to be. Meanwhile Guentzel is going to LIGHT IT UP for the next several years with Kuch and Point.

Guentzel is a good player, but no way he is an upgrade over Stamkos. We'll (Lightning) lose 10 goals or more over the season, just on the power play alone. It's not just the goals he scores, its the fact he opens up the power play because they have to cheat to his side. I'd rather have Stamkos for another 4 years at 8M, than Guntezel for 9M for 8years. If I was betting on it, I'd bet Stamkos scores more goals over the next 4 years than Guentzel.

If I was a Lightning fan I'd be pissed. I think this is an example of Vegas winning the cups effect on the league. The Bolts dropping Stammer the second he starts downhill, after the guy won them 2 cups on sweetheart deals, is so shitty.... but shitty wins Cups now I guess. Ugh.

@@KS-xk2so How much of a "sweetheart deal" Stamkos gave the Lightning is overblown. IIRC, the amount he would have gotten from Toronto had he signed there was rumored to be 11M AAV. He signed in Tampa for 8.5M AAV. Given that Florida has no state income tax and the federal tax rate at that time was lower in the US than it was in Canada (I think), the take-home difference for Stamkos was minor at-best. I think at best, he gave Tampa a 1M discount. And he didn't have to uproot his entire life and family and move to another country. Now this is based on 2024 numbers, but the principle is the same. An 11M USD AAV salary in Ontario would net you just over 5.1M USD after National and Provincial taxes. In Tampa (a state with no State (Provincial) Income Tax), that 8.5M AAV would net Stamkos just over 5.5M USD. So by signing that deal in Tampa, he didn't need to uproot his entire life AND family, and ALSO made around another 400K over signing in Toronto.

@@Starfire099 all that tax bullshit is just noise. Their accountants and agents can figure out a way for them to take home almost the same amount anywhere. He took a 2 million dollar haircut on that deal, minimum. Not to mention, once he did, it encourages all the other stars to as well. It's a major factor in their eventual success and they thanked him by basically shitting on his face and pushing him down some stairs.

@@KS-xk2so Maybe, maybe not. Hey, I'm devastated he's gone too. I wanted to see him retire a Bolt. I'm a lifelong Lightning fan since BEFORE we drafted Stamkos. Ever since their inception. I remember going to games in the "Thunderdome". I even went to one in their first season in "Expo Hall" in the Florida State Fairgrounds. I'm sorry, but Stamkos at 35 is not worth 8M AAV. The most I would have paid is 6M AAV because he's a defensive liability, which Guentzel isn't. I'm just saying that Stamkos signing that contract in 2016 wasn't him being altruistic. He didn't think the little bit of increase he'd of gotten in take home pay was worth the hassle of changing teams. And 11M for Stamkos in 2016 would have been overpaying. Look at the situation Toronto is currently in. They spend so much on their top 4 they can't bring enough depth, defense and goaltending in to surround those top 4. None of those top 4 guys are worth 11M+ AAV each. 9.5M TOPS. MAYBE 10M for Matthews. And that's in TODAY'S money, not 2016 money. Stamkos was a defensive liability. He was a -21 this past season in Plus/Minus. Guentzel is a +16. I'm less worried about replacing his on-the-ice production since Guentzel is comparable on offense. It's his leadership that will be difficult to replace. Hedman led them on ice for their first cup in 2020 as a group, but Stamkos was still in the building at the time. Is he up to the task to take over completely? I don't know. But the bottom line is that Nashville overpaid and I think he'll struggle there. But I do think that if the most Brisebois was going to offer was 3M, he shouldn't have made the offer at all because 3M for an 80 point scorer of any age is an insult. I hope Brisebois is fired soon because while he may not value draft picks, he's now given the entire league the impression that he'll overpay and they are taking advantage of him for it. A THIRD ROUNDER for a single day of exclusive negotiating rights? That's sixth/seventh rounder territory. Fifth at most. Brisebois doesn't manage his assets well.

Stamkos was -21 for the season. He is a defensive liability. I completely understand why BriseBois did what he did. Ruthless Execs stay in the business for a long time because they make the hard decisions based off of facts and not emotions. Nashville made a big mistake. Preds have slipped on defense and they are now only getting older with their roster

Love the guy as a lightning fan and I think the Preds overpaid, but he improves the offense and powerplay. With that said, Guentzel is an improvement. Guentzel could very well score around 40 goals and get around 100 points with Kucherov. He’d also improve Kucherov’s +/-. Kucherov was fine defensively but often played with Point and Stamkos. Kucherov and Guentzel will improve each others’ numbers.

You should be happy as a Bolts fan. BriseBois has turned the team around in a great position and it only took him 2 years. Tampa Bay is no longer in cap crunch hell. If I were you, I would be ecstatic. Not a single member of your team is making $10M+. Do you know how impressive that is?

I'd imagine the number is 8 because he went free agency. He'd have probably settled for 6 and change or 7 to stay.

Agreed. I wish Stammer the best, but he's a defensive liability, something Guentzel isn't. At first I thought 9M was a little steep for Guentzel, but after thinking it over more and comparing stats between him and Stamkos, I'm thinking 9M may be a bit of a bargain. Stamkos was a -21 on +/- last season, Guentzel was a +16. And it's structured better. The most I would have given Stamkos was 6M AAV at 4 years maximum. The defensive side of his game is what makes Guentzel worth 9M and Stammer only 6M. Once he scored those 80 points, I knew the Lightning wouldn't keep him because I knew a team like Nashville would overpay for him like they did. That said, Brisebois has been both good and bad as a GM at times. He overpays for trades (Jeannot being the prime example. NTM giving up a 3rd rounder just for 1 day of exclusive negotiating rights which was 6/7th rounder territory). He also overpaid Sergachev BADLY. Sergachev is a decent defenseman with some offensive upside. Max on him should have been 5.5M AAV. There's not a chance in hell he's worth 8.5M AAV when we only pay Hedman 7.875M AAV. That said, he did get a good return for both Sergachev AND Jeannot. But if he doesn't sign Sergachev to that god-awful extension, Stamkos' extension likely gets done before this past season and he retires a Bolt.

As a lifelong Lightning fan (I went to games in the "Thunderdome"), I'm of two minds about this. As a fan, I'm devastated that Stamkos won't retire a Bolt. He's been the face of the franchise ever since St. Louis and Lecavalier were traded. As someone who was looking at the hard numbers and hard realities of the NHL, this probably was inevitable once Stamkos put up the numbers he did. Other teams would see 40 goals and overpay for Stamkos like Nashville did. His numbers were deceiving. He's not going to have Kucherov feeding him ungodly amounts of passes on the power play. Stamkos had a Plus/Minus of -21 last season. Guentzel, who has a comparable amount of points to Stamkos, has a Plus/Minus of +16. He's also used to changing teams and still producing. At 35 this coming February, I foresee Stamkos struggling in Nashville. He's not going to put up 80 points. That being said, 3 million was an insulting offer. I think a 3-year, 5-6M deal would have been fair. And it was never the money with the Lightning, it was the cap hit and what it would do to their team. An 8M cap hit for the next 4 years on a player who isn't great on defense isn't worth it. They spent an extra 1M in cap space and got a player 5 years younger, who is much better defensively and has proven he can put up comparable numbers on different teams. And the structure of the contract is much more favorable. With the contract each season being like 7/8'ths signing bonus and a MODIFIED NMC for the last 3 years of the deal, if Guentzel falls off they can either trade him or buy him out with much less of a cap penalty. I don't know what terms Stamkos was asking for, but he'd likely demand a full NMC for the entirety of the contract.

I think you guys are right that Stamkos just didn't fit in with what Tampa is trying to become, which is unfortunate. A week ago I messaged a buddy and guessed that Stamkos was after a deal netting him around $30m. I had Tampa offering a 6 year deal @ $4m per, and based on the math of his Nashville's deal netting $32m, I apparently wasn't very far off my projection. He can still net 30+ goals for at least 3 if not all 4 years in Nashville. Great acquisition for them.

Also to Jesse's point that power play goals still count. Yes they do, but stammer was the beneficary of getting powerplay goals setup BY KUCHEROV. Kuch isn't going to Nashville with Stamkos so I'd imagine Stammer's power play points will drop.

Preds fan here - even I'm shocked that Stamkos didn't re-sign with Tampa. I'm down with Trotz deciding to go for it now. Might as well not waste the remaining prime years of Josi, Forsberg, and Saros. Given the age and term, they are definitely set to start declining pretty steeply in 3-4 years, but crucially Trotz didn't give up any picks or prospects. Best case, some young guys step up on ELCs at that point as the vets decline. Worst case, they stink in 3 years and end up getting the high draft picks that our contingent of doomer fans have been clamoring for, anyway.

This is such a great move by barry trots. When trots joined this organization everyone thought that the predators would be in a rebuild or retool. Which we went into a retool. Getting guys like Nyquist O’Reilly for cheap and absolutely doing insane for the cheap contracts. Now adding marshy and stammer we are going to be a threat if not we can sell these guys. We also have so much prospects and young talent. Go preds let’s go get the cup. Plus foresborg orielly nyquist need this are offense has just gotten better

I know it’s his “hometown” but who would want to play in Toronto when Canada is taxed to oblivion. Florida and Tennessee have no state income tax. Also the quality of life/weather/and many other factors are probably better in the states compared to Toronto.

Sure, they should have probably offered Stammer $5m or so, but $8m is too much. In case anyone didnt notice..Tampa in its current form was done winning cups. Fact is; Kuch, Hedman, Vasi, Point, all more important and impactful. You cant pay your 5th best(at best) player like he's your star (TORONTO) Besides, were they supposed to play it like the Pens or Caps and slowly fade into miserable mediocrity?
