I don't get to paint as much as I like to due to being in school and finishing up my degree. However, I love watching your videos because I get motivated to paint and its a refreshing break from studying. My issue is feeling free with my brush. I love how you are not afraid, you add color and if it spreads you work with it. Thanks so much for sharing your talent with us and giving us tips!

I love this lesson. You always add just the right amount of information to round out what I need to learn. It is so easy to become discouraged ...but when I tune back into you there is an uplifting comment, something that gets me back on track. My enthusiasm is recharged and I discover that I am not alone with trials and errors and climbing those mountains to achieving a successful result. Thank you , Angela.

Thank you for this demo, and, the addition of colour adds another dimension that is appealing and interesting. I am learning to remember to do value studies from my photos, since taking W/C Mastery and realizing how helpful and important it is for the painting process. My thought for pictures I 'see' (not photos), that I need to take the time to do some sketches for composition, and then build on that with value studies, perhaps even more than once, before trying to paint a final attempt.

I got the Versatil rigger #10 and I love it so much. It gives some randomness when held back on the handle but does precise strokes and blending perfectly with a shorter grip. It hold a ton of paint. I’m really happy with it. We all love the colors but value is more important than color. I need to do these one color studies in plain air.

Normally I just do this by myself but it's really nice to have a video of someone you like and respect doing it with you. Thank you Angela, I will be looking at your website and want to take your mastery class in 2019. Dear Angela, Happy New Year! I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season. So glad to see you back. Contrast has been so difficult for me to understand. I know it is important for success, and I will have to work on it much more. Your video is very helpful and thorough. I love your study and I think it's beautiful. I love the dramatic effect of using just two colors: one intense and the other offering a hint of color and interest....It tells a story as you say. . Best wishes for a happy, healthy and colorful year of blessings! Your NC friend, Sherry Lee

I am ready!! Finally, ready to pay attention to Value studies. I was in Your first Master Course. I was not ready to embrace the VALUE, in value studies...After doing holiday cards for well over a month, it feels as if I can not paint at all.....I have been pondering my situation. I realized, I (almost) have to start at the beginning... rather than being frustrated/discouraged , It takes the pressure off of me. Once again Angela, You provide words of wisdom, encouragement, and/ or a watercolor demonstration/lesson, JUST when I need it!!! Thanks!! PS...How do I transfer color into what I learn with value studies....after 3 years of watercolors, I am realizing I do not know how to do value with colors...YIKES!!

Try taking a photo on a tablet or iPhone, then in settings there should be a greyscale effect to make it black and white. It's so much easier to see the values that way. Hope this helps. ☺

I do several thumbnail sketches to get my placement of items (Especially if I am using 2 or 3 photos to make my composition), to decide on the colors I want to use ( I am a firm believer in using a limited palette--a color wheel is helpful here too) and to get my values correct. I find that if the values are off the whole picture can be off and it can be hard to figure out where I went wrong. I know that some people pooh-pooh the idea of value studies , find them boring and will skip this step. By working on my values, my painting has improved so much. Thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge with us, Angela. Have a very Happy New Year!

It's always good to remind us to do these value studies, as they help us add depth and shadows to our paintings, transforming them from flat entities into dimensional and realistic paintings. Everyone will soon learn to see values in everything they look at. However, this can be quite annoying because, at times you just want to relax and visit with a friend and you find yourself studying how a shadow falls across their cheekbone, down onto their neck and then onto their clothing. They may become paranoid and ask, "Why are you staring at me, do I have something on my face?" So you try to explain that you are simply noticing values and then they tell you, "You are so weird". 😊 However, when your brain automatically sees these values everywhere, you will create better paintings.

I wish you would have talked a bit about what you saw as the light, medium, and dark values in the photo, and how to translate that into the mixture/application of paint. To me, this was a painting demonstration of a reference photo using one color with a highlight color added. Not that it was bad, it just didn't teach me much about values. But perhaps I'm not experienced enough.

I have a question...I typically paint mostly in an abstract style straight from my head. I know that your paintings can be very abstract in style, but still come from some part of the reference photo. How do you do a value study when doing something without a reference photo? Does this make sense?
@elsagrace3893
@elsagrace3893 5 жыл бұрын
1105renrut just take one color and paint with it. The purpose of value is to delineate or communicate the picture so if it’s and abstract from your head then that’s what you want to communicate. You’re just going to have to do it and see what happens and adjust your aim if it’s not going where you want.

Happy new year! Nice video! In fact i did a pencil sketch before my last painting. I didn't help a few things like the water, but everything was ok except i had a problem with the arches 140lb cold press paper. When i applied the water i got a bunch of dark spots in one section. Never had that happen. Have u seen it ever? It was bright white.
@cassiescreations9828
@cassiescreations9828 5 жыл бұрын
I saw that happen with another brilliant painter, in another video and he was using a different but very popular 100% cotton, 140 lb paper. It's a "bad place" in the paper but if you notice that every sheet does this and it really effects the brightness of the paint, the color of the paint and the painting as a whole then I would definitely contact Arches or the supplier you purchased it from - they might replace the sheet, paper block or pad that you purchased. I think it's usually just one sheet every now and then that has this problem area. I do not know if anyone knows what causes this "dark reaction" but I assume something wasn't mixed well and when wet, spreads. Good luck!

@@cassiescreations9828 Thank you so much for the input. Besides the spots the paper, it is totally off. My paint isn't going on smoothly, the colors on the paper are bland. I put all this work and i want to toss it. I took and divided one sheet, so i am going to try the second half. Plus there is a sticker on one side that won't come off. I saw complaints about that.

@@lilbird2734 Well that's a bad piece of paper for sure! I hope no more of your expensive papers are like that one! Definitely contact the supplier if they are. By the way, those stickers are on single sheets of cardstock (I craft, as well) and it drives me crazy because it can ruin that portion of the paper. It makes no sense to put stickers, with glue, on paper!
