Thanks for this! I'm trying to learn to do the splits for a Zensual dance class and they charge ridiculous prices! I've spent my whole life without sports and just desk jobs and Im trying to learn to take care of myself. Sometimes those prices are discouraging (because I have to pay for healthy foods, new clothes as I lose weight, etc lifestyle changes are expensive!) and I think that its' amazing that they have a passion to help people! Thank you!

I was told about that stretch by my physio/osteo, but because I don't have the level of flexibility that you guys do, I can't grab my ankle to do the stretch. I tried the sitting on the legs version, but I can't put my arms back to rest on my hands either. I was at the gym and actually put one foot back onto the Swiss ball, which allowed me to do the stretch. My physio agreed with that option, and also said I could use a chair or the arm of the couch to get myself into the position to stretch my quads. Just wanted to share that option in case anyone else has the same struggle. Perhaps if I do it enough, I'll get to the point where I can hold my ankle!

FTR, this old "trick" actually has nothing to do with stretching the opposing muscle group. It actually works due to putting an active load against the opposing group. This is because in order to allow a muscle group to move the limb, the opposing muscle group needs to be relaxed (otherwise they would offset each other, and little to no movement would occur. In order for this to happen, the nervous system sends a relax signal to the opposing muscle group at the same time it is sending a signal to the loaded group to contract. Stretching the opposing muscle group appears to work, because stretching puts an active load on that group, and sends a relax signal to the group you are trying to increase flexibility in, but any active load will work. And the effect is at its maximum immediately after tensing the opposing group, and diminishes as time goes on. Also, the reason you want to lock your knees in such demonstration stretches is because when you don't, there is no way to definitively show an increase in range of motion, because what appears to be extra ROM can actually just be increased flexion at the knee joint. In this case, the subject is clearly bending his knees more, detracting somewhat from the claims made.

If you do that quad stretch lying down with the other leg bent you won't get that arch in the back that comes from tightness in the area. More effective and safe for people prone to such issues.

I looked up this stretch because I did this exact thing today while walking. the back of my legs felt tight and fatigued after only half a mile and my back felt an ache. Normally I'd want to stretch the part that feels tight, BUT as exactly as you demonstrate, I instead stretched my quads (since I realized I never do that much) I then resumed walking pain free. yey!

I have a few issues with this: 1. The quadriceps are irrelevant, stretching them is the only way to relax the hamstrings. 2. I understand that stretch receptors stimulate muscle contraction in response to stretching. But how does hamstring muscle relaxation (which presumably dampens stretch receptors) mean that your hamstrings are now able to stretch further? You stretch them again and the stretch receptors activate as usual. 30 seconds of bending your leg is not going to change your stretch receptor sensitivity over any long period. 3. The only effect I see in this video is perhaps that of warming up, and his knees were also slightly more bent at the second stretch. 4. You did not recommend warming up before stretching
