I have a confession.... As a pianist at my church, I have been playing for about 9 to 10 years and I still use the transpose function on my keyboard. I feel ashamed to even type this. But after viewing a couple of your videos, and from other musical mentors I've recently come in contact with, I feel compelled to find a way to learn in all my keys. KC, you have been an inspiration for me to get out of my comfort zone and to keep striving to become better. Thank you bro!

KC, I am loving your playing. I am already too deep into "traditional" theory to use TRANSFORMULA, so I am looking at your playing from that perspective. I especially like the 43+65 move. For those that are curious, here is a traditional theory take on it (starting at 3:01) KC is actually playing Major 6/9 chords instead of major 7ths on the progression. So for example, a C Major 6/9 has these notes: C, E, A, D, and G. KC simply plays this as a rootless voicing (removing the C) so he is left with E, A, D, G. Next he adds a chord to lead into these Major 6/9s. Naturally, KC uses the dominant V chord. KC makes this V chord a V13 with a 9 as well. So, for example, the V of C is G. The notes in a G13add9 are G, F, B, E, and A. Again, KC makes this rootless, playing just the F, B, E, and A. So, 43+65 is, from a traditional perspective, a V-I progression using rootless voicings. Notice also at 3:08 he adds another V-I to the progression, putting an E7b9 before the Ami. Once again, he makes the chord rootless, leaving the E out of it. Great playing KC, THANK YOU!

It's now 2:00 AM. I made the mistake of looking at Facebook an hour ago. Saw the paid video. Then I found this youtube channel and I just finished watching this video. I'm hooked and sold. I've been playing the piano for 40 years. I'm good at what I do but people "expect" what you demonstrated here from me. And I just never learned how to do that. I'm teaching my kids to play too. So I want to get these formulas in them now. Who knows? In 10 years from now when they are in college these formulas could be part of the curriculum. Oh work is going to be so much fun in a few hours.

I've been playing bass for over 30 yrs and for the longest time I had these same fears until my father ( who has been a musician for 70 of his 85 years that he's been on earth ) explain to me that practice makes perfect.... Terrance Taylor Playing live in front of people is what makes you a better player, musician. My suggestion is to go to as many sheds (jam sessions) as you can. Many people don't realize just like with bands, it's the stage that makes you a tighter unit. Don't be ashamed of where you are musically, just keep practicing it will come. Many people give up because it takes time and effort.

I like your approach to what I hear as rootless quartel voicings. The 43 65 is a classic rootless V7 to I(6/9) The Ab D G C is a rootless Bb7 (try stacking 2 more 4ths and you get Ab D G C F Bb (Bb7 with root on top classic Mcoy Tyner voicing ) The stacked 4th voicing you use G C F Bb is a rootless Eb 6/9 chord (G=3rd C=6th F=9th Bb=5th)

ALso it would be great in future videos to play the transitions in the perfect timing if possible then slow it down because it's kind of hard to process them when you slow that section down without letting know how it should sound. Hope it makes sense. Keep up the good work

Dear KC, First...thank you. So I have been playing over 15 years and like many others felt comfortable carrying a service in a COGIC environment, but often struggled in the natural keys, and I suppose I have been a bit lazy. Today I purchased the Play it now, and Play like you 1, 2 and 3. The PLY 1 was so basic for me, but it was important and essential to establish me for what I missed not playing the naturals. You very well know COGIC and we sing in E flat, C sharp, A flat, B flat and F sharp. That's where I was for ages. Now the theory in your explanation makes so much more sense! Also, it (this) has been an answer to prayer because I have been waiting for 2-3 years now for someone to be able to explain to me coherently the 2-5-1 and you did it in like, oh 7 minutes. Awesome. And ANOTHER thing... playing the 5 over the 1. Interestingly, I could hear that when other people played it (I have almost perfect pitch...if there is such a thing) but I can do it so easily because well I know the *language*. My voice is my first instrument and I think that has helped me also. So again, thank you and I hope this post helps increase the downloads. Blessings eternally

Could these formulas be translated to a guitar???
@benirodriguez9516
@benirodriguez9516 7 жыл бұрын
well the formulas are based on theory... and music theory can be used on any musical instrument.. they may require some adaptation though, but yeah.. sure. This would be great for a jazz or fusion guitarist, maybe not so much for a pop/rock/blues guitar player.. at least not on chord level... on improvisation, yay.. anything goes, as you know how to do it! ;)

btw.. nice to see you write your last name correctly!.. I chose not to use the " í " to make it easy for countries that not use that kind of simbols over the "i" like where I live.. "Norway" ;) but Im spanish and I use them... though I also use this other letters: Æ and Ø :P

In Music Theory How Can i search for the "formula"? Do you know? Im From Brasil :)
@IluvinortheIneffable
@IluvinortheIneffable 7 жыл бұрын
You wont be able to search for these formulas. These are things you learn from studying music or jamming with other people. They're just patterns that you notice and implement. Having an understanding of scales and chord progressions is all you will need. Then its all about finding things you think sound nice to spice it up.

My biggest obstacle has been learning to play in all 12 keys. When I first started playing, I just learned songs/chords but I never really learned the theory behind them. Now, I'm in lala land and I feel like I'm stuck in the mud. SMH. More than 17 years and still don't know half of what I'm doing. Your playing is very limited when you struggle to play in all 12 keys and on top of that, my ears aren't fully trained to hear the key someone is singing in. LAWD HELP!!!!! :(
@prettysimplemusic
@prettysimplemusic 8 жыл бұрын
+Chevonne Reynolds Everything takes time - but most importantly finding what works best for you... all 12 keys can be a challenge - but plan your work, and work your plan... start small and build from there... like major chords in all 12 keys, then the 2-5-1 in all keys, then add some of these tools to your toolbox... there's so much out here, but you have to find the system that works best for you... as for ear training, start small... like nursery rhymes and finding the key, then start naming the bass line for other simple songs...

I have to be honest, I'm classical and Latin pianist. study music around 10 years and still I found it hard to harmonize and improvise accompanying a singer or playing with a band, I decided to buy this video; for me turned out to be a master class, is incredibly functional, anyone can learn it. KC just have to tell you're an excellent teacher and thank you very much.

+tubulli What's a 13 chord?...lol I'm just kidding...You can teach a 8 yr. old the 5/4/3 INSTANTLY IN ALL 12 KEYS much much quicker than the hours/weeks/months of theory involved in learning the complexity of Cmaj7+9+11+13...lol :) Learning both ways is great, but not essential... I must commend you - Great analysis, my friend and thanks so so so much for watching!!! Much love!!! :)

Thank you for posting this. I've been a gospel musician for over 40 years -- basically my whole life -- but I was classically trained; I'm looking to expand my musical style. I'm kind of a Richard Smallwood style player but I really like some of these jazzy chord progressions I hear you more modern cats play. The 43 + 65 seems to be a good place for me to start.

I was skeptical when I saw the title, but SO glad his formulas are referencing scale degrees and actual Theory instead of arbitrary qualifiers like some other "easy" cheat methods. This is great for any student to become more familiar with scales and Key signatures. Will be sharing this with our students.
