This STD was going around my community last year. A woman KNEW she had it and was still selling herself for money... They should put out a public warning for things like this. I had a break up that year. Had particularly bad acne and my eyes have been so sensitive to sunlight. I convinced myself that I must have this. I was SO RELIEVED when I came back std free 😂 My doctor also wasnt happy about testing me. When my results came back negative he acted as if I was wasting his time. How terrifying.

As a nurse back in the late 1980’s, I took care of a lady who was so sick with this. She was bed ridden with it and it impacted her spine. She was not able to straighten out her back and just existed in a fetal position. It was awful for her.

How awful for your patient. I have a somewhat similar story. As a student nurse, I recognized a new patient on our rheumatology ward, who had a very painful wrist, and it was unclear what it was. After a week of testing, it came back positive for syphilis. With the proper treatment, she made a full recovery. It was scary, though, that she belonged to the same circle of people we both had sex with. This was pre HIV (1981), and all women used oral contraceptives, so we stupidly rarely used codoms. Luckily, I tested negative.

This was the first sti i ever had and it went undiagnosed for about 8 months of secondary synptoms. I was so ill and my immunity so low that i caught Glandular Fever ontop of it. A viral and bacterial infection ruined my body for 8 months. My rash did not go onto my palms and i also had Bells Pausey as a result. I couldnt eat; i lost allot of weight and at the end i had telogen Aphluevium (sp) and all my hair fell out. I cannot believe after all the tests i did for hiv and everything else that not one doctor tested me for this! It was the worst illnes ive ever had. So please be aware of these additional symptoms you may get and if you ever go undiagnosed for more then a month of illness get a full sti screen and save yourself the pain!

One important, sometimes overlooked aspect of syphilis testing is that if you have some sort of autoimmune (Lupus, Hashimotos, etc.) with Anti-phospholipid antibodies, ANA, etc. you can receive false positive test results. So, it's important that your doctor knows all of your diagnoses so that they can order the more extensive/correct tests.
@PhenixJoe
@PhenixJoe 10 ай бұрын
Yes I was one of those people. I had a positive syphilis test, which seemed so odd to me given how infrequently I had sexual partners. I finally saw a doctor wo gave me an ANA screen, including DSDNA, and both were positive. Turns out I have lupus.
@Ooomfufu

That's why it's important for PCPs to order confirmatory tests along with titers. For example, RPR titers with TPPA confirmatory tests to rule out false positives.

But why ..? 😢
@danielbenitez6985
@danielbenitez6985 3 ай бұрын
The reason is because sex education on kids under 18 has proven to be useless. Even with sex education available in schools in the past.. people were having babies at young ages as ever before. STDs spread as ever before. Condom usage did not increase. In fact, exposing kids to sex education actually makes them want to have sex even more! It’s better to use the time actually educating them on core curriculum, and getting their minds off of sex with extra curricular activities.

As a nurse, patients presenting with Syphilis are given one injection deep within each buttock. These shots are very painful, so the specific antibiotic also has a pain reliever mixed in the syringe. The needles are long and heavy duty. So protect yourselves, wear protection and don’t engage in risky behavior - STDs are spreading in the older population who think because they are too old to get pregnant, they don’t need condoms. If you say no to protection, you maybe saying hello to Herpes, Chlamydia, Genital Warts, ( a precursor to cancer ) Syphilis or Gonorrhea.

@@DUES_EX Judgements are good. We need judgments so we can clearly define the line of what is acceptable/unacceptable behavior in society. If you are participating in high-risk sexual behavior and acquire and spread syphilis, that behavior should be stigmatized because it causes harm. It is often the taxpayers who end up having to pay for the treatment for these individuals because often these individuals cannot afford to pay for it themselves. It is not fair that we have to pay with our money to treat syphilis someone has acquired because they are reckless and lack good judgment.

Even hiv can be caught not sexually but of course it’s rare but can absolutely still happen. Best ppl with hiv stay on their meds so their viral load is untectable so it can infect others. @@ou1814PV (the sexually transmitted ones) in a nutshell: If you are a woman, 50%+ chance that you have some of the strains. If you are a man who has sex with men, 70% chance. Most men who get it on their penis have no clue. Same with honestly probably 90% of people that get it vaginal or anally. You have to be very hands on with those areas to feel a wart.. And on top of that, most people never even get warts on the first place. Most people clear the infection in a few years. A very small percentage people who get HPV can end up with pre-cancerous cells. A very small percentage of those people develop cancer. Moral of the story, look for any wierd bumps on any penis you come in contact with. If you have receptive anal or vaginal sex, get a pap smear often (how often depends on your sex life). Also important, there currently is no pap smear for oral /throat HPV nor any really good regularly used way to look for it or precancerous cells... And oral /throat cancer caused by HPV is fast surpassing the amount of cancer caused from smoking.... So start pushing the medical industry to find better ways to check for it. An important and informational video. Spirochetes are very nasty little creatures. I read somewhere a while back that neurosyphilis can develop IMMEDIATELY after infection and does NOT necessarily manifest ONLY after secondary or tertiary stages. Some prominent people have died from neurosyphilis, and apparently it is most unpleasant. Friedrich Nietzsche died from it, as did Winston Churchil''s father, Lord Randolph, who was a leading British politician, and chancellor of the Exchequer. Randolph's erratic and bizarre behaviour in the later stages of neurosyphilis wrecked his political career, and emotionally traumatized the young Winston.

I was tested positive with syphilis last july 2023. I had the symptoms since may 2023, unknown red spots on my feet sole and palm of my hands and generally feel weak. I kept asking myself since may 2023 until the day i got tested why i always feel sleepy even i slept 8 hours a day and had proper meal and nutrition. I went to our local healthcare ang got jabbed in the butt with penecillin G. The doctor told me that I have a lenient syphilis. Maybe i got the syph way back year 2018 or 2019 and the bacteria just slept. Thankfully the medicine was free.

There are Super STDs going around for several years now. I work with a state health dept here in the states and its close to an 800% increase in super syphilis. These "Super" stds are stds that have started becoming immune to some antibiotics. Syphilis has a blood draw test, and is treated with a shot in the butt. Gonorrhea is also becoming "super". It and chlamydia have a swab test or urine test. Pills for the chlamydia, shot for Gonorrhea. Hope this helps people who are confused or are unsure of the testing process

In 1932, the USPHS, working with the Tuskegee Institute, began a study to record the natural history of syphilis. It was originally called the “Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male” (now referred to as the “USPHS Untreated Syphilis Study at Tuskegee”). The study initially involved 600 Black men - 399 with syphilis, 201 who did not have the disease. Participants’ informed consent was not collected. Researchers told the men they were being treated for “bad blood,” a local term used to describe several ailments, including syphilis, anemia, and fatigue. In exchange for taking part in the study, the men received free medical exams, free meals, and burial insurance…😢😢😢6

... Major? Based on what? Remember all news is blown out of proportion. Sure the rates are going up. But as someone who is considered VERY high risk of all STIs I've had under 10 in the last 10 years. Syphilis once. And the fact that we KNOW that the rates are going up is actually a good thing. It means more high risk people are being tested more often. That they are being treated quickly and are not spreading things around as much as those who do not get tested. We saw this happening with HIV infections. By and large, the higher risk someone is the more likely they are to be responsible and get tested.

If you are a historian, reading about the old west. Syphilis happened to the common sex workers like prostitutes or "soiled doves".it was noted in slaves at that time and the American Indian. Many infected people didn't know they had syphilis. Behavioral change could happen further as they got older and /or when the families placed a love one in an asylum and even there were people contracting it in fecal matter, urine, or even people who were taken advantaged of in these asylums.

I have been researching my family genealogy for over 25 years and have found out some interesting information! First of all, I have copies from a journal that belonged to my grandmother's cousin. She states that her husband gave her syphilis and she had to be put in a mental institution! This was in the 1920s before penicillin! Maybe she had the third type of syphilis that you were talking about?? The second thing is about my great grandfather. His death certificate stated that he died of paralysis ??? This was a 1925. After looking at the code written on the death certificate, it indicated syphilis!!

Was it GPI, General Paresis of the Insane which is another name for advanced neuro syphillis when it gets very active and causes a dementia type illness. When I did my psych training back in the 80s after if did my RGN training there was a large population of old men and women in the psycho geriatric ward who this was their diagnosis. Infection probably dated back to 1st and 2nd world wars.

this video uncovered memories from a situation that happened to me a few years back i donated blood for a (relatively) distant family menber,some time after we went there to get the blood test results due to the fact the blood i had donated was tested for stuff that can affect the recipient of the transfusion of blood, i opened it up and read it trougtly all were well until i passed my eyes over the syphilis category the type A was marked negative(as one would expect usually if you are familiar with the proper precautions) but when i looked at the second type b what i saw made me stop talking to my mother, on the paper marked as follows: syphilis type b/2d(po) my mother looked at me and asked me what was wrong and i stared at her for a bit and she followed my eyes to the paper and she saw it and went silent too i looked her in the eyes and told her that *i needed* another blood test sinse i had never had intercourse at that time so that positive appearing out of the blue in a blood test for a blood donation *really disturbed me* i did not understand how&why exactly it appeared on that blood test but we did a second test and we were relived that it was a false positive on the first test the second test showed that my blood was 100%clean from stds(syphilis) and some reagent for the tests may had some anomaly in its composition and that may have caused a false positive on my first blood test results stay vigilant and safe out there everyone

Such stigma.. lol. Even if it was really positive… big deal? It’s treatable with an antibiotic shot.. just like any other infection. There’s no shame in getting an ear infection from spending a day in a pool.. or catching a Flu from someone sneezing on you. Why such stigma because you passed a bacteria via sex? If it happens it happens… do what you do for any infection. Try not to spread it & get treatment 🙄

We've had family members want to accuse staff of making their loved ones worse until they find out the reason for the sudden decline in their loved one. Doctors don't really like to treat and test for stds. They dread the troublesome lab test sending process and the follow up contact tracing procedures if the results are positive. Some of them also like to bring up moral when it isn't necessary. Instead of addressing and focusing on treatments first they go judge and attack the patients lifestyles instead. When stds are such a common and widespread occurrence these kind of attitude just work against the quick detecting and treating process instead.

In the same time when we use that verb we don't mean anything about the disease or any STDs or sexual intercourse. It's 100% used to convey anger. It's used by everyone, even the simple people not knowing the first thing about the disease. It's extremely interesting that tertiary syphilis had such an impact in the past that the verb is still used today to accuse someone of being too angry and/or crazy or to convey that we ourselves are too angry and irrational!

I knew Syphilis was a bacteria, but I didn't know it was actually curable! That's reassuring to know even if prevention is the most important step.

Keep in mind this covers the typical varieties. There are also some locations/people with "super" variants of some STDs like syphilis which can't be cured by antibiotics. Prevention is for sure very important

@12345678900emiry I work with child survivors of sexual abuse. The youngest syphilis patient I've met was 5 years old. Is she a "hoe"? Should she be "held accountable"? Or should she maybe have the option of educating herself about a disease she had no choice in contracting without being shamed for it by pathetic trolls on the internet?

My mom’s neighbor’s son is disabled and mostly in a wheelchair. He is about 20 now and his mom has to change his diapers. She had syphilis thanks to her husband fooling around. Oh and he had a baby due around the same time as this child. I don’t know if that other child got infected but he definitely got his wife and the baby/now adult has lifelong issues. They are surprisingly still married but she definitely hates him. Syphilis is no joke.

When I was 18 years old , for a living I used to go to blood banks to donate blood for food vouchers as I was very poor back in those days. Interesting enough, on one occasion, they called me back in after donating blood and they told me that after they've tested my blood, it came positive for syphilis?! My face dropped but at the same time I knew they must be wrong as I didn't start being sexually active until a year later. Like I told they, surely they're mistaken unless I'm stupid and maybe I contracted it by thin air otherwise it's impossible. Upon hearing what I said, they re-done the test and they've apologised and said that the original antigens they saw in my blood were the same that would come up if you had the flu or a cold and it mimics the same antibodies that would appear in a syphilis infection. I was shocked that wow I didn't know that antibodies aren't always spot on. But hey, in the end, I knew I was right and they was wrong. Forgot to mention, I did have a nasty flu a week before donating

I also tested positive - and they are still doing confirmatory test - I'm shock hearing that its positive knowing that I am not sexually active.. I only had one partner in the last six months.. and I always get tested every 6 months - the case manager told me that its always positive -if your initial result is positive - I had a cold before I got tested and have a cold on the day of my test... I hope its the reason why I'm positive!

@@darrielsaintz3080 I've been told that many viruses and infections have similar antibodies that turn up positive in the blood giving a false positive result. So I'd say, test again as the 1st results can be wrong. Best wishes xx

I would love a followup about people who don't actually have syphillis, but who get a false positive result in blood donation screens. Such is the case with me; as further tests show I don't actually have it. I've never even been considered high risk for syphillis (only 2 hetero partners ever, never had a single STD) but due to the inability of Red Cross to discern between true and false positives, I'm one false positive away from being permanently deffered from donating. It breaks my heart because I just wanted to help save lives by donating blood - but I feel so gross and dirty having to face false positive results threatening my ability to donate, despite never even having had syphillis.
