Nakayama Sensei, Shibucho of the Aikido Association of America Western Region, gives instruction on how to teach beginners to do a forward roll using the unbendable arm. Most beginners will be able to do a forward roll if taken through the steps outlined in this methodology. For the few beginners who may still have difficulty rolling, see:

Grass can work if nothing else is available. In the early 90s I used to use a futon to practice ukemi at home. A regular mattress works really well too. The futon was my favorite choice as it was comfortable and muffled all sound in my apartment.

i think if you do the technique correctly then you can do it on grass or any surface like bricks, or ect. but to gain confidence i recommend doing the different ukemi a shot on the mat or at the beach because the surface is more forgiving. I do Japanese Jiu Jitsu but it was a battlefield art so those guys were doing Ukemi in any condition. Just start on soft surfaces or ask your sensei for additional time after class for help. Good luck! :)

Thank you sir. I don't do aikido but the art of soft ground contact is crucial in many sports. I'm going to do static diamond pushups, wall-assisted hand stands and planks to strengthen my arm so it won't bend easily.

+tomimn2233 - Contrary to what it seems, exceptional arm strength is NOT required for rolling. Contact with the ground is at an oblique angle, dissipating the force along the whole length of the arm requiring little strength. Just enough energy to keep the arm from collapsing is all that is required. The concept of Unbendable Arm is to use only the appropriate muscles, thus keeping the arm soft yet unyielding.

Very good ideas, some I already try to use when teaching, the others I will test on our 'younglings' :)

I'm new to Aikido, and I'm loving it so far. Except that part of my sensei's lesson when we have to Ukemi. I'm struggling a lot. I feel like I wasn't given enough time to practice, and that stopped me ever gaining confidence. Not to mention that I banged my head really hard one time at that point in the lesson. I wish I could practice at home in my own privacy with these videos but I don't have any mats. Do you think this could be done on grass or do you have any other advice?

Sorry to hear about your ukemi experience. The art of ukemi seems to be skimmed over by quite a few dojo. This might be just due to a lack of a good methodology. Rolling on grass isn't a problem for a veteran aikidoist , but it might be hard for a beginner. My advice is to get an experienced aikidoist to walk you through the steps I've outlined. I know if you take it step by step, you shouldn't have any problems learning how to roll safely. I've taught well over 300 students using this so far.

+Hibz 히바 Bring your leg more over the middle of your current center of gravity. This will propel you over towards the direction you wanna go. Also, push with the leg whilst on the ground more to propel yourself further.

"Mae Ukemi" is a general term for various forward falls. "Zenpo kaiten" is a term used in some organizations (but not used in the Aikido Association of America) which refers more specifically to a forward roll. "Zenpo kaiten undo" refers to an exercise for rolling forward. In the AAA, the forward fall preventing a faceplant is simply called "Mae Ukemi Breakfall".
