So I have a Daniel Defense DDM4V5 and I purchased it four years ago. The rifle has about ten thousand rounds through it. I'm able to shoot quite a bit because I have 25acres in southern Ohio and I built a small range on it equipped with several AR-500 targets. Nevertheless after watching this video I went and looked at the firing pin in my DD and it has the exact same kind of cratering on the tip as seen in this video. The cratering on mine is a little bit more center but under magnification it looks almost identical to what this video showed. I wish I could send you a photo or hell even the pin just so you could show students or your KZfaq audience. With all that said I ordered a new one from Brownells.

@SchooloftheAmericanRifle2 жыл бұрын
It depends on too many variables to give a hard number. These things can have an effect on bolt life: - ammunition used - gas system length - gas port size - gas system efficiency - carrier & bolt dimensions - bolt material & finish - upper receiver trueness - throat & headspace and so on. Some bolts can go 2-3x the round count you have on yours but some don't. If you do consistent visual inspections of the bolt, and check headspace occasionally you are better off than following a round count regiment.

CB Yes. I was wondering if chrome had problems like nickel boron does where the coating interferes with the carrier keys threading becoming to thick for the screws. @Painterrap4 жыл бұрын
Well there are some things as an AR-15 owner that you really need to understand. To start with round count is almost everything when we start talking about worn or diminished tolerances. If you take a new DD BCG and perform an inspection on it then we might be able to start drawing some conclusion as it relates to manufacturing processes or a companies ability to reinforce quality control standards. But in all reality the above example with a new DD BCG wouldn't even be a fair assessment of manufacturing quality as we would need to inspect thousands of units to really obtain an accurate conclusion. So using an example of one unit which also has 7K rounds down the pipe isn't an even remotely fair way of concluding overall quality. The second consideration is care and maintenance there is no way for us to know how well taken care of that example really was. The third thing is you need to understand that most if not all the stuff that instructor Chad inspects are wear parts on an AR-15 and they are expected to slowly loose tolerance and eventually be replaced. Also going back to care and maintenance the AR-15 is a very robust system and is capable of running thousands of rounds without being cleaned and other KZfaq channels like MAC ran a BCM 8K rounds without cleaning and almost no malfunctions but does that mean it isn't going to increase the wear pattern. If you go really long intervals without cleaning your AR-15 (e.g. 2-3K rounds) then it's going to wear quicker because all that debris in the moving parts causes wear which can accelerate the process of lost tolerances. The point I'm making is that there are several variables which must be considered when attempting to draw a conclusion about the overall quality of a product. Sometimes things as simple as ammo selection can even have a major impact on the wear pattern of a rifle. For example if a rifle sees nothing but a steady diet of steel cased ammunition it can increase the wear in several areas of the AR-15. I saw a guy who had totally lost the tip of his firing pin and he had ran about 10K rounds of Wolf Steel cased and those steel cased rounds usually have a relatively hard Berdan primer in them and by comparison to your Boxer primed brass cases the steel cased rounds wear the parts that interface with the ammunition way faster. So what I'm saying is don't draw your conclusion on this one inspection alone. And as an FYI that's why Instructor Chad always uses that disclaimer toward the end of his videos saying " Just remember this is only an example of one BCG and is not a representation of all BCG". He also places emphasis on round count very strongly when it's applicable.
@willguthrie51864 жыл бұрын
"Overall, with 7,000 rounds, I'd say that this bolt carrier has done very well." -Chad, at 13:51
