Note that the compass that was calibrated at the start of the flight is a gyroscopic track indicator, not a true magnetic compass. The magnetic compass is located in the middle of the cockpit, above the dashboard.

I know it's been a (relatively) long time since you put this out, but thank you. I just recently bought this game because I noticed it supported VR (I also recently got a Quest 3), though I used to play X Plane back when iPod Touch was briefly a thing. It wasn't for a while that I was able to afford a PC that could actually run a flight sim, though I did enjoy playing around in MSFS back during the time of Windows XP... Anyway, playing this game today with a VR headset (via Steam VR) and being able to set up the autopilot with a flight plan (shout out for showing Little Navmap btw, it's like the program I never knew I needed) means that I can now set up a youtube video in the Quest's browser. It behaves as if I were in "pasthrough" mode, so even though the surrounding screen darkens somewhat, I can still make a PIP-type situation with a video placed over where the copilot's yoke is. I just tried all this out making a flight from JFK (NYC) to Logan (Boston) in the Cessna. So relaxing, though I did at first forget to press the "NAV" button twice, and was wondering why I was flying out to sea lol. Also I am still terrible at landings, and *may* have broken the propeller off of the plane. The main thing is that I was safe and in Boston. xD Thanks again for this, I was feeling rather intimidated trying to do everything manually, and the panels seemed so mysterious to me, but now I feel like I am finally coming to grips with it all. My next goal is to learn how to interact with ATC

Pity that there isn't an "I like this a LOT!" button to click! I'm pretty new to X-Plane, had a few lessons in a 172 many years ago (that only had steam dials and basic radio kit) but had to give it up.... so it's great to get back to it in some fashion. I've been staring blankly at those boxes and screens on the right of the panel - now I've got some basic idea of what to do with them! That was an excellent introduction to their usage - concise, clear, methodical and practical. And LittleNavMap - what an amazing thing! Just that has been a total revelation! Liked, subscribed, and shall now eagerly go through all your other stuff. Thanks enormously!

Great video, as I'm getting into flight simming to supplement my real world instrument rating. That said, as you may be aware, that's not a magnetic compass--it's a gyroscopic heading indicator which loses its bearing over time. You have to realign it with the magnetic compass (top of dashboard) every so often. The compass has its own faults during climbing and turning, but together they give you what you need. A few other points for those interested: The GPS "TRK" doesn't give you a compass reading, it looks at your last few points in space and figures out which direction you're heading based on that. Also, don't drop flaps at speeds above the white arc. Again, great video, helped show me what X-Plane can do IFR-wise, just wanted to point out some things outside the scope of the video.

Very well done tutorial, the kind that makes you wonder why nobody else trying to explain it could get it right. Thanks. I’m wondering if you’ve done a video on using the VNAV feature of the Garmin 530. I completely understand the concepts behind it all, but I think Garmin’s workflow/process/UI designers need some updated training to learn how designers at Apple, etc get it right. The Garmin way seems about 30 years old …

It's slightly less realistic but on the x-plane if you click on the Garmin 530 or 430 nav instruments it pops up a new window right in front of you with the instrument easy to see. Wonderful explanation and flight!

Being picky here... It's the Di that has gone out of alignment with the compass, not the compass out of alignment, and you put the flaps down outside of the white arc of the asi. Other than that, a clear and concise explanation, thank you.

I have two questions! When you take off, you trim the ailerons, where is the trim wheel located in the aircraft, and how do you set it on your flight stick or steering wheel? I thought I would have to keep steering into the wind with side winds if I'm not flying on GPS.

Thanks so much for this tutorial. I have a problem though! I have exported the .fms file to my Output folder but it doesn't show up on my GPS navigator ' flight catalogue' screen?? It's blank? PS, I have noticed that my GPS 530 in the Cessna says 'navdata out of date', is this something to do with it? Thanks
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Жыл бұрын
Two things going on here. I expect the GPS navigator is looking in a different folder (I've never seen it, so this is a guess). The navdata is easier to answer - XPlane ships with old AIRAC data - to update it requires a paid Navigraph subscription. The navigation system in some planes checks the date of the AIRAC database you have, and complains if it's "past it's sell-by date" :)
@MrPhillipgraham
@MrPhillipgraham Жыл бұрын
@@jonbeckett thanks very much for the reply. So do you know where I am supposed to put the .fms files? I've put it in the output folder, there isn't a flight plan folder or anything else there? Do I have to update my nav data for the GPS or is that unrelated? Cheers.
