This is a .565" bore, 14.5" bell, Euro-shank (medium shank) Eb tuba with three valves. It's quite stuffy on certain notes and the missing fourth valve register is necessary if you want to be able to play most contrabass (BBb, CC) tuba parts, but it is nevertheless a very fun and affordable instrument for someone looking to explore the realm of bass tubas.
Thanks to the school's brass quintet for providing background music :)

A fun little bit of history: this tuba has been sitting for years in my school's band room because it was once used as a convertible marching tuba or contra. Why you would want your high school tuba players to learn a new key of tuba solely for marching band, I cannot say, but I suppose this instrument is considerably lighter than most BBb tubas or sousaphones.

Samuel Plays Brass | I think the original instrument that was used in the Bydlo solo was a French C tuba, which was a euphonium-like instrument with 6 valves. Contemporary instruments might suit better for the solo, but here’s a link for some being sold. wessex-tubas.com/products/french-c-tuba-tc236

You’re correct. I consider the French single-C tuba (as opposed to a modern CC contrabass tuba) to be a “tenor tuba.”

Wow that's so interesting. I now own an ancient Ohio band instrument co. Eb student model Tuba simply called "the Regent." Pretty crazy since the regent line was really only produced in the 30s and 40s. It was about to be thrown out by my school when they renovated the band room but my band teacher decided to let me keep it before graduating (bless him). I've only found a couple other pictures of this tuba on the internet and I wouldn't be surprised if mine was one of the most well-preserved ones out there (most of the lacquer is intact, valve caps still twist off, and the slides still move!). I feel real lucky to have it!

@@ericpalacios920 That's really cool! Shame there isn't more info out there about it.

Thanks for posting this informative video. I play mostly euphonium, trombone, valve trombone and baritone. In December I bought a used Couesnon Eflat tuba online for $999.99 and I love it! Takes much more breath than the euphonium though. I have played some nice solos at church. (Many hymns are in Eflat, Aflat, or Bflat.) It has a sweet sound though not as much as the euphonium.

Thanks for the comment! Church settings and small ensembles are probably the best use of this instrument due to its small bore and lack of projection compared to larger tubas.

thank you for providing the introduction i was looking for! i just bought a Concertone Eb just like this, as my first tuba, because it was incredibly cheap. So now i know what to expect!

One of the best sounding flugels I ever played was a vintage Couesnon from the 60s. Wish I still had the funds to get one.

Never had the opportunity to try any other Couesnon horn, but I have heard some really great things about their flugels! I hope to play one of their Monople flugels one day.

I play the Bb tuba, and I really like it, I really wish I owned one since my only other instruments are recorder, a trumpet with barely usable valves, and a trombone, but I haven't had any slide cream or grease for it in a couple months, so I've pretty much stuck to valve oil for most of last year and probably a good chunk of this year.

Well, you can always look into a company like Eastman, Wessex Tubas, or Mack Brass if you're looking for an inexpensive tuba to own, and there's definitely some used Conns and Yamahas floating around out there for fairly cheap. I think you're probably right in going for a Bb tuba first.

It's pretty much what was handed to me by my band director, at school I play a rather beat up Jupiter JCB-378, at home I play a Jupiter JCB-382, the only thing I like more about the 378 is it has a second spit valve so I've never had to pull out tuning slides to empty spit on it so far.

I always had issues trying to satisfy the conductor with this instrument. Lets just say it's not easy to play and it doesn't go as deep as i would like it to. Well at least i struggle to get to the lower notes.. Thinking to sell it and get something easier and deeper. Not sure if i could bring myself to selling it though. Any tips on mouthpieces, i have a feeling i have the wrong mouthpiece for mine. I think you summed it up pretty well. I was describing it as very windy but stuffy also fits the bill. I was thinking to get a mouthpiece that seats a little deeper in the lead pipe and perhaps one with a narrower cup. Could a narrower mouthpiece actually improve my bass notes?

Sorry, but I am very inexperienced with tuba mouthpieces, so I am not much help in that area.

lol, .565" bore! Is it seriously so small bore that it doesn't have false tones? My rinky dink Eb Bass doesn't have much trouble playing contrabass range because the false tones are so good, but I run out of lip in the pedal range. And yeah. Eb instruments suck. Horrible key signatures. Almost always bad slotting and intonation. I guess they're ok for reading bass clef and pretending to be in Bb. I looked at that Bydlo solo once and was just like "lol, nope".

Markworth False tones are fairly easy on this instrument, particularly contra G, but I didn't demonstrate them because I'd probably get ripped apart for being bad at false tones in the comments. To be honest I really do like Eb instruments and if this had a compensating fourth valve I'd get a lot of use out of it. The sound isn't ideal for contrabass parts but it could do great on some of the higher stuff.
