The time has finally come! My foam insulation board is going up in my shop. This insulation is going to make a huge difference in my shop! This insulation paired with my lanair waste oil heater I wont be chilly anymore!

Honestly...that was the plan all along, until I put 2 test sheets up on the wall shiny side out. I felt like I was in a tanning booth and immediately decided the white side would be showing.

@@EverythingElliott either way, I’m glad I saw that you used this foam. Seems like a great alternative to paying the price for spray foam. Plus, you can do it a little at a time while moving stuff off the walls like I’m going to have to do in my building.

I have watched over 20 different videos about how to install rigid foam boards, and your video is the best. It is 9:30 p.m. eastern time, November 25th, 2023. I do have questions I would like to ask since I have never done this before. I have a metal building that will become my shop. How long does it take for a reply? Cynthia from North Carolina

If I remember correctly it took my dad and I approximately 8 hours to do the ceiling. I had him on the ground cutting while I was calling out measurements and installing.

Nice job, i I thought the walls would be a problem but looks sweet, my question is I guess you put the silver side to the metal so the foam won’t absorb the condensation? What kind of heater are you running… is it NG or oil?

I put the silver side out because I felt like I was in a tanning booth when I put 2 test pieces up. The white is the same metallic material, just painted white. I run a lanair waste oil heater. I have a video from a couple months ago of me setting it up and going through it

Awesome, I'm considering doing a similar project! Did you have any condensation issues before insulating? Did you have to cut the foam down to size? I've noticed that the studs of my steel garage are 4' on center and the insulation comes in 4' wide pieces, so that's about 2" to cut off the edge of every sheet to make them fit. Have you had any issues with wasps or mice occupying that air gap?

Surprisingly, I didn't have any condensation issues prior to insulating. I think there was enough airflow through the building to prevent that. I did have to cut the foam sheets down, but I did buy factory miscuts so they weren't exactly 4'x8'. I don't have any issues with mice due to my resident mouser, Theodore. And wasps...I haven't seen any around, so I'd say no to that.

Nice job, I have a question I know when you put up the insulation you had the reflective outside and not on the inside of the building any reason why you did it that way? And thanks to friends who helped make a big job a little smaller. Thanks Michael

The plan was to have the reflective side inward, but I put 2 test pieces up on the wall before starting the ceiling. I felt like I was in a tanning bed with just the 2 sheets I couldn’t imagine an entire shop chromed out. The white side is actually the same reflective material, just painted white.

I’ve watched a lot of videos about this, & the silver side acts as a radiant barrier, so you face it outward to keep the hot & cold out. That and the air gap prevents moisture buildup and regulates temperature.

Hello, I'm in upstate NY and came across your channel while researching insulation ideals for a metal tube building. There are so many cons over and beyond that crazy price for spray foam in a metal build. I thinking foam board but I'm also looking at Bluetex and pro 2 insulation. For foam board, I was going with 1 1/2 sheets and 1/2 inc sheet cutting into 4-inch squares with foam board spikes 5 of them glued to my metal exterior sheet per 4x8 sheet of board. The 4-inch squares would get pushed onto the spikes first to hold the 1 1/5 sheet a 1/2 inch off the wall for the air space. My question to you is how did your joining plates work on the roof and how is it all working out for you now that its been up for a while.

Those plates; in my opinion were the best option I could come up with. The insulation made a huge difference in warmth and how often my heater runs. I would do it again the same way if I had to.

I have a wood framed pole barn and also wanted to do spray foam. But like you said, cost prohibited. Good to hear the foam board is making that big a difference and looking forward to seeing how well it does in the future when it's complete. Also, what are your future plans for a wall covering?

as of right now, I have no future plans for wall coverings.... Things seem to be working well they way they are, any further steps would be cosmetic in nature, and for me, cosmetic is not necessary, as I would rather spend that money else where on attachments for the tractor, or truck parts.

@@EverythingElliott Here in Canada, in order to get insurance or pass a building inspection, we would have to cover the foam with drywall at least.

@@terrencejreich I could see that for getting the certificate of occupancy for a commercial or residential building, but not for an outbuilding like my shop.

@@EverythingElliott In Canada, an outbuilding requires a permit. And then it is inspected. If you insure that building then it is inspected. In both cases, this building, with uncovered foam would not pass even though it is not occupied.

Hi there I came across your video looking for ways to insulate an old Butler style building, it’s like a Quonset type but it has a flat roof, and the steel is a heavier gauge. Do the foam boards not get condensation behind them ?

It's 2" rigid foam board. You should be able to get it most any building supply stores. I got mine second hand from a guy who buys factory blemishes.

Did you use the Sheetrock screws at all or just let gravity (on the ceiling) maintain the air gap ?

In the really tight sections, I just let the friction hold it up, on the boards that I was a little sloppy cutting I used the sheet rock screws. All of them have the metal ties up as a safety so they don’t fall though

If I were to do that, I would skip the foam board, sheet the walls with the plywood, then do blown in insulation in the cavity.

Update is I love it, nice and warm in there, only issue I’ve run into is in my haste of putting them up I missed a couple of the securement ties and those pieces slid down like 6”, but that is easily remedied. No mold or condensation issues thus far

I’m not sure, it was a year ago I don’t really remember sorry. Just take the square footage of all the walls and ceiling and divide that by the square footage of a 4x8 sheet

How did you get the boards to stay ip what did u use help

All the boards are friction fit, I cut each board for an exact spot on the wall and ceiling. On the walls it’s friction only. On the ceiling I used rafter ties across the steel structure to hold the board in place. I think there are 3 videos in this series, I discuss that in one of the videos. It was a while ago so I don’t remember which one exactly

They are tie brackets. You should be able to find them at your local home depot or Lowe’s

It’s noisy that’s for sure. Not as bad as it used to be, certainly notice the difference, but I wouldn’t say it’s silent in there

Cut the boards a hair big and used the pressure of the board squeezed between the tube steel. Also used joist plates screwed into the steel supporting the foam. I explained that in one of the videos.

Im less concerned with the temperature but more concerned with the sweating. I just build a 60x100 2 weeks ago. Some days it feels like it rained inside. How did this help with the sweating? I got a $50k quote to spray foam it 😲.

I have 0 issues with sweating, I don’t know if I’m the odd man out but some people tell me it rains in their shop. Currently 27 degrees out, and 72 in my shop, not a drop of water falling

I bought it all second hand off a guy on Craigslist. If you’re anywhere near the western NY area you shouldn’t have any issue finding him on Craigslist. He’s got a whole warehouse full of it. There’s no markings on it anywhere so I can’t even give you a manufacturer

I'm not sure, It was unbranded and I bought it off a guy on craigslist who buys it factory direct defected. the boards weren't exactly square.

I couldn't believe the price of the spray foam. I would have thought maybe 5k to spray foam it not knowing the cost of the materials. Prices must be really out of control on that stuff too.
