One of the most important parts of a shipping container home conversion is the insulation. A steel box is fantastic at absorbing the suns heat, and at transferring the cold from the outside to the inside.
There are a few commercially available shipping container insulation kits and you can get shipping container insulation spray foam, but I chose a product with extremely high performance in a compact space.
Polyisocyanurate offers twice the performance of result polystyrene container home insulation, or rockwool insulation, which are both often used as container house insulation.
For the container house floor insulation I've used 50mm, or 2inches, of polyisocyanurate.
For the container house wall insulation I've used 50mm, or 2 inches, of polyisocyanurate.
For the container home ceiling insulation I've used 50mm and a further 25mm of polyisocyanurate.
This is the equivalent of 100mm of regular insulation on the walls and floors, and 150mm on the ceiling.
In my opinion polyisocyanurate is the best insulation for shipping container homes because it adds excellent performance in a very limited space. This is the best insulation for shipping containers in my opinion. The cost to spray foam a shipping container is huge, and whilst polystyrene insulation, the shipping container insulation panels, and rockwool insulation are all cheaper, you either lose a lot more interior space or have half the thermal performance. So if you pay a little more you get a much better result.

How much was the overall cost of the insulation??

I got a great deal, for me it was about £300 or under $400 - but it probably should have been about 50%-100% more.

Another great video, Spot on Vince. We typically use 100mm of rockwool pushed into a 50mm cavity for our insulation and this performs extremely well, so we suspect your insulation will perform even better. Looking forward to seeing the finished article!

The naughty truth is the container has been finished for almost a year, just catch up on videos now. But that does mean I can vouch for the awesomeness of the insulation. Possibly even slightly overkill, but we've had some very hot days and it's been fine. I'm yet to try any really cold days.

Hi Vince! I've yet to watch your other shipping container conversion videos (but I will!), I'm looking into insulation currently. I do still have to get the container leveled, and have a while until I'm ready for framing and wiring, but what you're using your container for is similar to what I'm wanting of mine. So my question with the insulation is whether or not condensation behind the insulation is a worry or an issue? Do the windows and door allow enough ventilation for it not to be an issue? I'm in an area that is often at 100% humidity.

If it gets very cold then condensation could be an issue between the steel and behind the insulation. But the windows and doors give plenty of ventilation and I leave the windows cracked quite often. Most people put in vapour barriers, I decided to let the timbers breath and any condensation has a path to drip down the inside of the steel. So far (a year of use, videos have taken a long time to edit) I haven't noticed any condensation anywhere)

Fantastic and informative series of videos matey... I’ve watch so many it’s untrue and the general consensus is that you don’t want any condensation built up as this will lead to mould and may impact on health issues given time. When I do mine I will insulate with closed cell insulation and either fill the sections completely or add the rock wall after. That way there is zero chance of condensation behind the walls. Will be watching intently onwards. Good luck!

After insulate the container what temperature is inside if you don't open windows?
@VinceSamios
@VinceSamios 4 жыл бұрын
When the sun is behind, to the side or above, the temperature stays at whatever it was. Maybe climbs 1-3degrees on a warm day. Or drops 1-3 degrees on a cold day. But when the sun shines in the windows it climbs quickly - the insulation is very very good, so the windows collect all the suns energy and the container has no way to lose the energy again. So in the late afternoon in winter when the sun is low I open the windows a bit. The problem is less in summer when the sun is higher in the sky.

@@VinceSamios Interesting. So maybe to mitigate this light is you might want to try and keep the container home in an angle that has the least amount of direct sunlight entering. Well if that's possible on the property. The windows themselves can also have Lowe/argon added to window which helps a little bit more. Some people might prefer the reverse though and want more light. I'm curious about exterior insulation options. Not as commonly used in homes, but I've seen some tiny home makers try and preserve the enterior as much as possible. Any ideas what might be doable?

It's not possible on my property, but I was thinking of adding some blinds. :-)
