I had struggled with this problem for 2 days, used u substitution, trig identity tan = sec^x-1, integration by parts but I couldn't progress. Then finally checked by your channel and boom, explanation took only about 2 minutes. It was so obvious that used improper identity for tan function. Thank you very much.

The best way to remember that identity is to derive it from sin^2(x)+cos^2(x)=1. Divide everything by cos^2(x) and you get the identity.

why wouldnt you just use the identity at the start? tan^2(x) = sec^2(x) - 1 integral of sec^2(x) - 1 is tan(x) - x + C

We can rewrite (tan(x))^2 = 1+ (tan(x))^2 - 1 so the integral becomes tan(x) - x + c

Why can’t I just replace tanX with U and the answer will be 1/3U^3 and then 1/3tan^3 ?

In that case, you'd have to integrate in the U-world. So you'd have to present the dx in terms of U. dU = sec^2(x)dx, so dx = dU/sec^2(x). You'd then have integral(U^2dU/sec^2(x)) to solve. As we can see, we still have a function in terms of x when we're trying to integrate in the U-world, which isn't ideal. So don't do U-sub, and no, the answer isn't 1/3*tan^3(x).

Isn't sin^2 x is equal to ½(1 - cos 2x) Not 1 - cos^2 x? Because -2 sin a * sin b = cos (a+b) - cos (a-b) -2 sin a * sin a = cos 2a - cos 0 -2 sin^2 a = cos 2a - 1 Sin^2 a = ½(1 - cos 2a) I'm just asking okay
