when norton created their version of the wankel rotary, they listed the seals as a service item and had a sort of two stroke oil injection. this was a very good engine, as soon as the seals started to wear. funnily enough, the new seals performed poorly until they became 'worn'.

The reason why it's working better with the inlet angle changed is because you're effectively running it as a turbine. You should try just switching to an efficient turbine.

Love this! Great work. Just want to point out though after watching the slow motion with the acrylic cover, the current position of the compression stage bypass allows the compressed air to also escape past the piston and out the exhaust in the second half of the cylinder rotation. Have a watch of the piston movement in slow motion. From what I can see you're only really getting drive from the point the air enters the cylinder to the point where the cylinder tip reaches the start of the bypass. Maybe a 4 tip piston or adjusting the position and size of the bypass would solve this. But this is an awesome project and congrats on the success so far! Keep up the great work!!

Great work! Rotary engines are some of my favorites! I’m intrigued by the functionality of such a small, but complex engine. If I had to suggest anything, maybe see if it could move a bicycle using regulated co2 canisters which release periodically to conserve pressure. It would probably have to be put on a horsepower ratio for more torque, but that part should be straightforward. Keep it up!

You should create a puzzle box that solves itself when you blow air into a tube or use an air compressor. The CO2 gas expanding is an Endothermic reaction (It absorbes heat) which is why it gets cold enough to freeze solid. Having the CO2 container submerged in warm water to provide some of the heat will help it maintain a little higher pressure for longer.

11:50 Would linking the "useless" compression chamber to a second in-line wankel engine double to torque output? I'm guessing this would allow the co2 to fully expand as well. Also, why not simply use a eccentric circle shape instead of a trangular one? This would eliminate one chamber and make for easier tolerances and less gas leak
@BC-wj8fx
@BC-wj8fx 2 жыл бұрын
The other side of the engine is not useless - he just wasted it. When running on compressed air it is a 2-stroke cycle - power, exhaust. You can fit two of these cycles in the same housing in place of the one 4-stroke cycle, simply by adding matching inlet and exhaust to the other side of the housing. Use side ports to reduce the overlap & leakage.

I worked on a job years ago where there was an Amish trim carpenter and he had a modified DeWalt miter saw that was converted to run on air. It sounded like a motor from an air powered impact gun, without the impact sound. It worked okay but the RPMs were lower than the electric version. He had a gas powered air compressor outside that ran it. He hired someone to modify the saw. It looked mostly like a normal saw except that had a connector for an air hose coming out of the motor cover.

he'd need to use metal parts which he cant manufacture or very heavy duty plastic parts that are expensive. either way, it probably wouldn't make for a profitable video, so i don't think he'll do it. also that engine has barely any torque, so the inertia and friction of a gearbox with that large of a ratio would probably instantly stall it. not saying it can't be done, just saying he'll probably fail/not try.

You may want to put parchment paper (wax paper) down before you print parts. I believe it will handle the heat and let the parts separate easily. You could have just put in a rubber seal around the drive shaft. Put some saran wrap around the drive shaft then put a rubber compound around the lid.

I've printed this and noticed an issue that could severely limit the efficiency of the design. As the intake opens, there is a path from the intake straight to the exhaust allowing air to bypass the engine completely. This is why angling the inlet cause such an increase in power as the flow of air was point away from the exhaust meaning more kinetic energy had to be imposed on the rotor before it could go in the other direction and go out the exhaust port
@mistert9144
@mistert9144 2 жыл бұрын
There is a little ridge in the chamber between the intake and exhaust ports giving the chamber an hourglassy oval shape. As the piston moves it should maintain contact somewhere along the ridge to keep a seal so air can't go straight from intake to exhaust. Regardless, angling the intake increases the air's leverage on the piston which improves efficiency, so good find there.
@harrylenon9594
@harrylenon9594 2 жыл бұрын
@@mistert9144when the rotor seal is over the intake port, the exhaust port is also open. This doesn't occur for much of the rotation, but it will still allow a lot of air to be wasted. Unfortunately i can't put photos in KZfaq comments to show what I mean

Power a car with it. The DeLorean DMC-12 (one of my favorite models of car) was originally meant to be powered by a Wankel engine, but there was only one company that made Wankel engines at the time, and they had stopped making Wankel engines. I myself plan to get a DeLorean (they’re going to start selling new ones soon) and put a Wankel engine in it.

When I was a kid, Air Hogz had an airplane that ran off of compressed air. You would pump it up using a bike pump, spin the propeller to start it and then throw in and it would fly until it exhausted the compressed air. It sounds very similar to this project. You should totally make your own, maybe even make it run on the co2.

If you continue with the co2 carriages with this system you should make a plane that utilizes the extreme exhaust pressure as propulsion. Or you could have a version that uses compressed air in a bottle but also has two extra co2 cartridges for boosts while flying s and also have the entire thing remote controlled
@jdray
@jdray 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, I was wondering if that exhaust velocity could be used for something. Just pointing it out the back of an aircraft would be interesting. If it was a fixed-wing prop plane, probably the exhaust velocity would make the plane outrun the prop. But if it was a rotor-wing providing the lift, and the exhaust providing the propulsion... hmm...
@sikertsok225
@sikertsok225 2 жыл бұрын
Just an idea, if someone is thinking about using this or something similar to build a compressed air airplane, I would make a 2 rotor either counter rotating with 2 shafts inside each other with 2 props or 2 180° offset rotors on one shaft. This helps with vibrations. Also if you use 2 shafts you can solv the roll problem a fast engine like this causes with props.

I wasn't expecting much from this as I'd understood that Wankel engines were very sensitive to tolerances at the seal but using the graphite pieces was just inspired and the engine really worked very well. Impressive.
@markfergerson2145
@markfergerson2145 3 жыл бұрын
There's a story, probably apocryphal, that Wankel intended to use the recently "discovered" ceramic silicon nitride seals because it's highly heat resistant and can be made extremely hard and smooth, a perfect bearing material for engines (where it's used a lot today). However, at the time it was only made in the USA and was considered a "strategic material" because of its military applications so no US maker was allowed to sell it to foreign companies. Hence Wankel had to use inferior materials that meant the seals had to be replaced too often to make the engine commercially viable despite several carmakers giving it a try. Since Integza's engine runs cold, graphite was indeed an inspired choice.

An internal combustion engine has 4 phases; intake, compression, ignition, exhaust. An air pressure engine uses just two; expansion, exhaust. If I'm not mistaken you could set up an airpowered rotary to have double the "powerstrokes" of a combustion rotary, aka 6 per revolution

Have you considered making a basic dyno for these engines. Could be as simple as coupling a small DC motor to the test engine and placing a resistive load across the motor terminals. By measuring the voltage and current produced you can calculate the power output of the test engine. Graph this against engine rpm and add a correction factor to accommodate for the rotational losses of the DC motor generator and you'll have a pretty accurate way of measuring each test engines performance.
