20:20 FAIL BRO! the non k version has base 3.6 and turbo to 4.0 , not 4.4, so here the K is interesting even when not overclocking:D

Great video, however with the recommendation of the non-K be careful as it is clocked 400mhz lower than the K, so the $25 for an extra 400mhz (if not ocing and using auto) is most likely worth it.

Thanks for another great overview Tom! Those temps are darn impressive compared to what I get on my 4770K. For the person looking to run stock, I think the K version of the 4790 is still worth it. The 4790 runs at 3.6 with a turbo of 4.0 while the 4790K does 4.0 with turbo of 4.4. For the extra money, you pick up an extra 400MHz without doing any overclocking. I find it strange that the 4790 is clocked that much lower than the 4790K but I guess Intel wanted to push more of these chips.

20:16 The Intel Core i7-4790 (without the K) has 3.6 Ghz base and 4.0 Ghz Turbo out of the box, while the one you just tested, as you know has 4.0 base and 4.4 Turbo. One would have to get the K SKU to get the higher out of the box numbers.

Chitta Chatta, grape vines, railway lines, jungle drums and smoke screens... There is a plenty in the soup today Tom!! I like it! Hey, your "Fango Tango," or however the heck it is supposed to go, is also a very refreshingly good phrase too; well, that is of course, according to my magnificent and exquisite taste - if such an assertion does not ruin my reputation for a humble opinion. Overall, it has been a jolly good fill, when you think along the lines of your output being - food for thought. Keep it a coming Tom, for, again, in my humble opinion, you are indeed a world wide web super star - self made and promoted or not. I got stung with the Maxi VI extreme too... You were so right about that Star Trek "beam me up," lazer gun thingy too, I have never actually taken it out of the motherboard box; so to speak. Keep that blunt honesty coming Tom too, for, it is such as that that will keep such as me tuned into your channel, even though, such as the topical review at hand obviously, made and still makes me look like a complete fool, for i.e. parting with all of the loot asked of me, yet, getting nothing special in return. Yea, furthermore, it was super to see you show how a £100 board was outperforming the Maxi VI; honestly, keep the reviews coming, because, I believe, it is starting to dawn on everyone, so to speak, that PC's are the future of such subjects as optimized video/computer/online gaming - whatever the heck it actually is... For me, it is computer gaming; well, I am proud to say such as - I owned three Spectrums, and I had a ton of computer games. P.S. I had a good few games anyhow, maybe not a ton. Surely there is nothing wrong with the phrase "computer games" and "computer gaming." For some strange and possibility unknown reason I do not care for the phrases "video games" and "video gaming." I am sure that the respectability of the sport and hobby has something to do with the core of such a dilemma... Concerning the games, I had about one hundred!! Is this crazy or stupid to ask of you Tom, but I was wondering if you did specific rig guide builds. I am asking because when I come to build my next rig - from scratch, obviously, a man of your knowledge and understanding of the subject and subsequent subjects such as component parts, I realize, that such input, could indeed, see me reach "the pearly gates," so to speak, and who in their right mind does not want to reach the pearly gates of PC's? If you are open to a little specific and personal guidance please do reply.

Just FYI: One of the charts you show from Intel identifies this part as the 4790k, not the 4970k as you have in the title of this video. Since they do make a series of 49x0k parts for LGA2011, people could be confused.

i have been messing with my overclocks the past couple of days, i have been able to hit 4.8ghz with a vcore of 1.275v the system was stable, and the temps are good with the corsair h110 with new sp140 fans, i have dropped the 4.8ghz to 4.5ghz with a vcore of 1.1775v maximum temp on the cpu was 46ºC after 15 minutes of aida64 stress test, this is going to be my every day settings, the temps are amazing and the voltage input is low btw the hottest core while testing was 58ºC,

I noticed that AVX capable Linpack is not enabled in the screenshots for the temperatures in OCCT. If I recall correctly, you had it enabled for the 4770k review and mostly always do for heatsinks tests. Without it, the temps could be around 10-degrees lower and not comparable to other tests.

5:47, in terms of upgrades I do agree that it comes handy, BUT, intel just upgraded the z87 price too... My Z87-K was 90$ when I bought it in September, now its 140$ lol... Kind of a greedy move by Intel, now there is literally no reason to buy z87 boards, they cost just as much as the z97. At least if they had the z87 prices reducted Im sure alot of ppl woulda bought them since its almost the same as the z97 xcept for the m.2 support.

Yeah, that voltage is about right for a clock of 4.8. I have my voltage set to 1.323 but under stress I see an absolute max (prime 95 V. 26.6) of 1.352 Volts and a usual maximum of 1.344 on the blend test. I couldn't figure out what setting was causing my voltage to go about .020 over, but I ran three different monitoring applications including CPU-Z and they all showed the same. I am pretty happy with an average maximum of 1.344V at 4.8GHz @ 76°C under an H105 with Noctua IPPC fans. Maximum spikes were 83°C, but that temperature is impossible to recreate in everyday gaming and regular use.
@MrLehi99
@MrLehi99 8 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, in any other stress my max vcore was 1.344, but prime 95 pushes it to 1.352. My voltage adjusts only in steps of .008 for some reason.
@Lexdrumz
@Lexdrumz 8 жыл бұрын
Its strange. Prime or any cpu load tester doesn't have functions related to Vcore changing at all. What is happening is that your Bios or your CPU itself might be setting the Vcore a bit higher under load. If your bios has set Vcore on adaptive that is. It can also be Digi vRM giving your CPU a little bit more power for under load. You can check that in AI Suite3 for example.

+neural_physics and if it isnt good enough to buy a 970? you would tell him to get a weaker CPU? Then the next time he would want to upgrade, he would possibly want the 980ti. would have to worry about that weaker cpu depending on what it is. Since he brought the 960, im sure he wouldnt want to go directly to a 970 when at that point a 980ti would be the next true upgrade by then.

Tom, you might want to double-check and clarify. The i7 4790 is NOT Devil's Canyon, it's merely a Haswell refresh and technically not just a non-K version. The i7 4790 is 3.6GHz base and turbos to 4GHz and doesn't have the capacitors and improved thermals because it's not an overclocking chip.

So, I just want to be sure; can the 4790k work on a z87 board? I plan on buying the Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H motherboard and I'm still not certain whether it is compatible or not. It's either the 4790k or 4770k.
@rossclutterbuck1060

Most Z87 boards will need a BIOS update, and you can't update the BIOS without a CPU installed. So, if you get the 4790K and a Z87 board the chances are it won't work. Besides, if you don't have any motherboard yet, why are you bothering with Z87? Just get the Z97 equivalent and save yourself the hassle - Z97X-UDH3-BK is the same price.

Ross Clutterbuck Thanks for the reply! I wanted the UDH4 because of the red heat-sinks and design. I was planning a red themed build and that motherboard would've looked pretty good with the theme. Plus I can't find another Z97 board with as much red as the UDH4. I guess I could go with the 4770k, but it may be awhile until I am able to get everything I need. Again, thanks for the reply!

There's plenty of Z97 boards to go with your red and black intentions. Gigabyte Z97X-SLI and Z97X-Gaming series, Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z97. I have to disagree somewhat. The heat problem with the 4770K can be easily cured. After delidding (removing the IHS) if one scrapes away the black gunk that Intel uses to glue it on (and gets rid of the ridiculously thick amount of thermal paste Intel whacked on), if one puts some good thermal paste on the the CPU and replaces the lid (which is now closer to the CPU then it will easily perform a lot cooler at a higher clocking than before. To me what Intel has done strikes me as what IBM used to do with their servers (look up "golden screwdriver") or with their aborted MicroChannel bus. Intel to my mind deliberately crippled the 4770K so that they could have a second bite at the cherry and offer those who had bought the 4770K an "upgrade".

in case youre not overclocking the 4790k it still has higher clockspeeds than the 4790. Is this still the fact on a h97 board ? will it still run with 4.0/4.4 ghz ? or will it run like the non k version ?

So I'm overclocking my 4790K and I am using 4.6 with 1.3V is that too high? I still get blue screens though. Is TOO much voltage causing blue screens?

This may sound like a silly question but is there a noticeably big difference in performance between the 4790K and the FX9590?. I do a lot of video editing and gaming, so is it worth switching over from the FX9590 to the 4790K?. Is the 4790K stable and reliable?. I love my FX9590 and Asus crosshair V formula Z. They have been rock solid and never given me any trouble. However, my formula Z is 2 years old now and starting to show it's age (it cant compete with latest z97 and X99 mobos). I am also reading online that AM3+ is technically dead (as no more new AM3+ mobos coming out). So I'm figuring to switch over to intel as a stop gap until the new gen AMD K12/X86 cpu and AM4 mobos come out in March 2016. If I sell my AMD rig now, I can get good money for it. So what say you?.

Can't say about this one but I have had the i5 4690k installed for about a week now. I get max temps of about 58 Celsius, when playing games. When not under much load, it stays around 38-40 Celsius. Maybe I just got a great specimen but the temps are awesome.

bean420man Since your comment, all still well? Looking to get the 4690K myself as no need for i7 as I'm just a casual gamer. From what I can see seems to be a damn good chip.

Silver Shaman Everything has been working great with the chip. Since then, I've paired it with a MSI 970 Gaming 4G, 12 GB RAM and am looking to get a new EVGA Supernova PSU. Temps have pretty much stayed at around 50-57 C under load, depending on the room temperature and since it is summer, it's expected that the temps rise a bit. May get the Enermax Liqtech 240 AIO water cooler later but it is not really necessary, more for aesthetics and maybe overclocking. This chip is awesome, paired with the other components listed above. Running games like Dying Light, GTA V, Witcher 3, Alien Isolation, Far Cry 4 and soon, Batman, at near max settings. Get at least 60 fps on every single one. Sometimes even with VSYNC on. Great chip and there is no need for an i7, unless you are really going to be doing a lot of editing, simultaneous streaming/gameplay, compiling or other such things, that can actually take advantage of all 8 threads.

bean420man Thanks for that, you've confirmed exactly what I thought. Am hooked on FarCry4, but have to have the settings on low to hit 60. On high it's around 30 which just sucks. Will be upgrading GPU at same time. Appreciate the time you took to reply. All the best, Adrian
