Intel i7 4790K - 5.1GHz Overclock on Water Cooling

3 жыл бұрынRecently I traded CPUs with another user on HWBOT forums, and this 4790K is the CPU I got. So far it seems pretty wicked at least on water cooling. Being able to pass Cinebench R15 at 5GHz with only 1.26v, and 5.1GHz with as low as 1.33v. IMC is also very solid for 2800MHz+ with CL9 timings. Will be interesting to test this one on LN2 later.
My old 4770K that did really strong multicore scores around 5 years ago was very similar to this on water cooling as well.

I have mine at 4.8 ghz at 1.3 stable. I have a h100i on evga z97ftw2 board. The CPU stays nice and cool! Don't go much higher because I just use that for gaming ,but this is such a fun CPU to use. Nice video showing what it can really do!

i've had my 4790k at 5ghz with liquid cooling delidded for over 5 years and it was rock solid i have a vid on my channel with cinebench score too :) this cpu is not dead still a gamin champ

Great video, I finally got myself a Die Mate 2 as my 4790k has always ran super hot from day 1. Been almost 8 years and only just gotten round to getting a delid tool. Reason being is that I am stable at 4.8Ghz @ 1.2v (uncore being 4.4) however, I thermal throttle massively. I believe I have a golden chip, but the thermals have always held me back so clocked to 4.7 @ 1.15v. Once it's been delidded hopefully i'll be able to take it higher.

I got a Scythe Kotetsu mark 2 cpu cooler and i already reach 81c on stock 4.4 boost on my i7 4790k. (Stock cooler would 100c &.BSOD'd me) Anything higher will get me to dangerous temps, any idea what else i can do to lower my cpu temp soni can overclock to 4.6??. Thermal paste is already renewed but not much difference as before

@@H.K-tm The thermal interface between the IHS and Die has most likely deteriorated and become bad. You'll need to delid the processor and replace the TIM. Just ensure use nail varnish clear coat over the SMD's on the chip to prevent shorts.

My i7 4790k was getting to 90 Celsius most of the time and throttling alot.i started learning about PCs and gathered my courage to delid.best decision ever.i run an Evo 212 old air cooler and overclock to 4.7ghz and it stays below 65 Celsius now.pairee with 16gb ddr3 at 2400mhz and rtx 3060 I get 90 FPS on warzone on high settings at 1080p. Advice to whoever gets his to hot to try delid and use metal liquid paste.good luck.

Nice chip, I got mine stable @ 4.9 1.275v but takes 1.32v to hit 5.0. 2400mhz ram. Haven't messed with that yet.

Amazingly detailed video. Thankyou for that. Can you maybe do the same with a more stable clock for not 'that golden' 4790k users? Lets say 4.7/4.8GHz with optimizations regarding lowering heat? Mine runs currently at 4.8GHz but it seems to me that my settings aren't quite optimized compared to those you setup in this video.

Most of these 4790ks seem to max out around 4.8-4.9...

@@ballage2023 Was using a Noctua Chromax D-15. Running it in push/pull with (2) 140mm 3000rpm Noctua fans . The CPU has been delidded with liquid metal, and has liquid metal between the IHS and cooler.

What is the actual voltage measured on the boards test point as my ASRock Z170 OC Formula undervolts by 0.03 volts from that set in the bios and reported in CPUz. You might not be volting as high as the software is reporting. Mind you 1.26v is low for 5.0GHz, seem to think my 4790k need 1.29.

hello friend that there are still those processors to buy so good ones from 2014 that they overclock at low voltage at high speed I have one but it requires 1.423v at 4.7mhz and it is not stable but in gaming it is ok to buy this RAM F3-2666C12Q-32GTXD what do you think about it I have 2400mhz of this skill 2x8 cl 10

I absolutely NEED a silicon lottery winner for my 2015 dream PC. The current 4790k in there is 4.7ghz 1.28v. Mind you this mobo isnt bottom barrel schlub board. This is a sabertooth mark S the apex predator of lga 1150 even basic 1600 ddr3 easily oc's to 2400. I just got the unluckiest 4790k

Im pretty sure i have a die frame for this cpu, if you are in the US I'd let you have for the price of postage. let me know, im interested to see what you can make this chip do with some direct die water cooling.

Wow. I am happy to get 4.7 ghz at 1.26v, lol, on my i7 4790k. I'm running an Asrock z97 extreme 9 MoBo. I have most of the BIOS OC tweaks you have but am missing some. While I can get it to 4.9ghz at 1.33v and the temps are 75-80 C at 100% load, and it passes short stress tests, it seems to freeze up on games. I'm kind of squeamish to go past that voltage. Right now I'm only messing with the frequency and core voltages, with everything else set to auto or default, and the cache at 4.0. Shall I continue to bump up the core voltage by say .005v till it's more stable or look into other BIOS tweaks for stability? What would be the first ones you'd suggest to change? I would like to get my cache up to 4.4 ghz, too. Every time I've tried though, it just F's things up fast. How should I go about cranking that up? I'm guessing it would help getting 4.9 ghz stable in the first place, right? Any advice would be appreciated! Quite new to overclocking.

my I7 4790K goes to 4.7 GHz with 1.22V (Stock V-Core), 1.337v at 4.9GHz and 1.42v for 5.1GHz. on my ASUS Z97 Sabertooth Mark 2/USB 3.1

Last I overclocked and bench 4790k at 4.6Ghz @1.224v, 4.7Ghz @ 1.25v, 4.8Ghz @1.275v and 4.9Ghz @ 1.316v (63c on Package). Tried hard to Overclock to 5Ghz even at 1.425v but failed. Only worked 5Ghz when set First 2 cores at 5Ghz and 2 cores at 4.8Ghz at around 1.36v. Later I quit testing. CPU already delided and lapped... Applied Liquid Metal and using Thermal Grizzly Paste with H100i V2 (4 years old now)... Since last 4 years, using 4790k at 4.6Ghz @1.22v for 24/7 little work and gaming. Passed benches like Prime95, Cinebench R15/20, Real Bench, AIDA64 and 3D Mark... all goes well.

Hey, do you have any experience with the M7I or the other Asus boards from this gen? I got a Z87 OC formula a while back and hope that's a nice board to play with, not really sure what's the difference between the z87 and z97 ones though. Hoping to make my first subzero benches on the OCF soon...

Yes, Maximus 7 Impact is powerful but sometimes it needs 5 minutes to post settings and that is damn annoying.

When i changed motherboard for this cpu the powerdraw for this cpu was much lower like 65-80watt for 4,7 ghz oc but the fps in games and benchmark was the same as the other one. Before this cpu was around 120 130 watt, i dont get why? One motherboard has 4 pins for cpu another one has 8 pinns.

Thanks so much, actually i have 4790k, so i still use it like daily on 4.4Gz with 120mm cooler liquid, i'm going to change cooler to 360mm to do OC with 4.8 or 4.9 if i can do that, i have gigabyte Z97-UD5H with 32 DDR3 RAM 1600Mhz, i'm going to try OC with 4.9Gz - 1.375V , i hope do that with more stable, if you have any advising please tell me about that, i need more information to do it. Hehe that's funny. I have a very similar 4790k bought from Silicon Lottery as 5G bin. I run it at 5.1G 24/7 on wcooling too with 2666cl10 corsair mems. Tho I will change it now for Ryzen

@@LuumiJuhani like prime95 full avx stable? No. Realbench 2.56 or cinebench r20 which use light avx is stable. I'm testing the microcodes now and what effect they have on oc but I think I need to go back to 19 as currently I'm on 27 or so which has security patches. Which bios microcode do you find the best?

@@LuumiJuhani So I went and did the same tests as you did on the video so we can compare :) Here is the results: System: 4790K Silicon Lottery 5.0G bin(top bin SL sold, bought in 05/2015) - Vietnam X438B148 Asus Maximus VII Formula - 2601 Bios Corsair Dom Platinum 2666CL10 2x4GB kit(I have 4x4 but tested with 2x4GB) - 10-12-12-31-1T Windows 10 with latest updates, Microcode 19. Vrin - 1.95V, LLC6 (1.9V works fine too) VCCSA/Analog/Digital - 1.16V The whole system is Wcooled, direct die + liquid metal. I have slightly better temps than yourself but the same delta between cores-Core 1 hottest, Core 3 lowest(counting from 0-3). In my 5.1G 1.31V test with 27C water my hottest core is 60C and coldest 51C. Results for CB15(lowest voltage stable pass): 5.0G - 1.255V(1.250V always crash at about 1/2 of the test) 5.1G - 1.310V(1.305V ~50% chance to pass) 5.2G - 1.420V(1.415V passed this as well a few times but rly hard) For Cache: 4.8G - 1.24V(can pass RB15 with 1.23V too but not overall very stable). 4.9G - not possible even with 1.3V, didn't go higher. What do you think ? :)

Is that 1.325 cache really 1.325?? I can never tell with my asus board because i set 1.31v cache for 4624 cache clock (100.5 bclk) but in bios it reports like 1.331~. Same with vcore, i set 1.29v but in stress test hwinfo report 1.312..

I just ran my 4790K at 1.26V, 5GHz with your bin settings in R15. She scored 976 while running HWinfo, 44C on three of the cores 46C on the last. Running with a noctua chromax d-15. One thing I noticed was the annoying crashes reduced greatly when I set my package durations to 4095, time window to 126, current limit to 1023. Would the next step be to see if this chip has the cold bug?

With 1.325 cache voltage every cpu can go up to 5.2 but you will probably melt your cpu cache

what volts do you need? i need 1.472v@4.8GHz/4.6cache on my 6600k for prime95 small fft@160watt\82C. i also loose max core clock if i OC the memory higher. 5GHz@1.52v cinebenchR15 passes with 3466CL14-20-20-28-1, but fails at 5GHz@1.52 with 3733CL15-22-22-28-1 for example. The z170-k does not set correct iol tl timings when going over 3466... soo had to figure that out, still dont fully understand them. (3866 is just imposssible to train) luckily the VRM coil whines, so by the noise i can tell if it at least attempts to train or not. what's your experience?

@@hidde663 4.8@1.46 above i have huge jumps in voltages 4.9@1.53 if i remember correctly, tested long time ago (temps become problem) 5.0@no idea probably like 1.65 haven't tested it obviously About cache i have no problem at all can run same as cpu oc like 4.8@4.8 etc no stability issues All in Phanteks Enthoo Pro Cpu cooler is Arctic Freezer II 360 so temps are under control My mobo is fine but trash for memory oc, it is Asus z170 Pro Gaming official ram support only 3400 i have Ripjaws V 2x8 3200@16-18-18-38 2t (dual rank Samsung E-die) With this ram and mobo all i can do is 3333@13-16-16-26 2t @1.45(also tighter other timmings) ~7.5k geekbench3 mem score cannot post anything 3400+ even with like 22-26-26-48 @1.6 won't even train... So i can't even tell if my ram oc reduce my cpu oc as you can see ;/

@@antigerast9175 i could not get 4.8 stable untill i lowered the LLC (1.504v in bios, 1.472~1.488 in the OS) and i delidded the chip, roughly 20~25C drop@150+watt loads! btw i cant get more than 7060 geekbench 3 mem score with 3733 single rank. i am using the 32bit tryout version tho. mem runs at ahemmm 1.63v gb3: browser.geekbench.com/geekbench3/8903432

@@hidde663 Dual ranks memory gives higher score overall over single rank with same MT/s and timings but i think your score is low coz your timings are 2loose, try to reduce them even at like 3466 you know mt/s is not everything. Btw what those sticks are? Rev. E or? (you can check it in "thaiphoon burner") not always saying the truth but still worth checking, 4sure not B-die coz your TRCD and TRP are rly loose. Hard to explain timings here, you can watch Luumi or Buildzoid about this topic. Im also using free gb3 32bit And i would not use 1.63v on ram daily, its little 2much imo try to cap at like 1.5 or so.

@@antigerast9175 1 stick samsung B-die and 1 stick hynix (undefined). both patriot viper sticks. had the other B-die stick die on me, it only boots @2133 with emmory errors. none of the timings go tighter no more haha. still pretty good for a 3200CL16-18-18-36-2 kit@1.35v. im pretty sure i did a run with 3200CL12-12-12-28-1@1.5v before i knew how to get past the command rate and frequency limit. Mine is running on 5.1Ghz on 1.4v with a Hyper 212 EVO and a MSI Z97 PC MATE, which is an entry level board. Surprisingly, I haven’t had any issues whatsoever, just got very lucky with silicon lottery, around 60-65C on full load

@@Mr1Tanker ambient temps near my pc are 18c usually due to ventilation being nearby, i am running push/pull and 6 noctua fans after 10min of prime95 the cpu temps were at 64c

Hi my friend, i see you have bios version L1.12D and i can't find this version on official z97 oc formula website. The latest is version 2.00 from 2018/3/13. I am little confused

It can be found on xtremesystems. This was very solid bios back in the day.

My i7 4790k can better this😂 Air cooled 1.115v core voltage giving 4.4ghz base 4.8ghz boost 74c under load Water cooled 1.17v core voltage giving 5.27ghz 76c under load👍

@sirfairplay9153 lol this didn't age well😆 your right, it wouldn't verify on Intel tuning, it ran stable for about 4 weeks then blue screen started to appear, at the moment I have it set 1.12v 4ghz base boost to 4.4ghz temp under load 64c and that is verified on Intel tuning, once I swallow a brave pill I'll have another pop at it, I know it can hit over 5ghz just got to find a stable volt setting
