*UPDATE* I've now changed a setting in the SRS software from angle to "rate", so the rig now rolls back after the initial turn. This also gives me a greater sense of yaw and helps with MC, VERY clever indeed!. Thanks for all your feedback and comments so far, rest assured once I get my settings dialled in, I'll make a separate setup guide. Cheers all!

@VRFlightSimGuy I would like to correct some information regarding motion compensation. It seems like there has been a lot of misconceptions about what it is and how to solve it. This is how it works: (As far as I have learned). The reason why you need motion compensation is because you want your motion to be relative to your motion rig. If your motion rig moves, you and your headset moves with it, and there is no way for the headset and base stations to know that you are in a motion rig. If you were in a real airplane, you would not move, because you would be strapped in, and G-Forces would also push you into your seat a lot of the time. Any motion you do inside the airplane will be relative to the airplane. If the airplane banks, you bank with it. What motion compensation does, is that it uses an additional tracker to cancel out the relative motion. A tracker is mounted on the motion rig, the base station can see the tracker and the motion from that tracker is then subtracted in the MC software so that the only way you move around, is your own head movement relative to the rig. Just as it would be if you were in a real airplane, moving your head around. Turning the base station off would seem like it solved it, because there is nothing tracking the headset anymore, and you can't move around, but it's not really a solution but a workaround. There are two things that are needed to make this work. A tracker and MC software. The easiest way is to mount down one of your controllers. All you need to to is to turn it on, select it in the motion compensation software and enable. And BOOM you are motion compensated! Sim Racing studio also has this hybrid virtual tracker solution that makes uses of a sensor from Witmotion. This solution is a bit fiddlier to set up and requires you to calibrate before every session. It's also limited to how many axis it can track, so if you are upgrading to more degrees of motion it may not work. Using a controller or physical tracker will not have this problem, because it is essentially tracked in all 6 degrees of freedom from the base stations or headset.

Thanks for this insight into flying with a motion rig. I used to know the then chief pilot with Delta, and now and then he could get a few of us non-ATPs in to fly the six-axis simulators at Delta’s Atlanta training facility. I can remember it adding so much to the immersion of sim flying, but never really thought home sims would offer that 6DOF experience. We’ve come a long way since. This is on my wish list now!

This does look really good. I have a simple Playseat Challenge racing cockpit that is basically just a suede deck chair. It doesn't move at all but on the very rare occasions that I've used it my brain tricked me into thinking I was tipping as I went around corners so I imagine even tiny amounts of movement feel really good in VR.

What also needs to be mentioned for other people looking into this is you have to take into account for motion compensation. When the rig moves so does your head and body in relation to the cockpit. If you do not have motion compensation its really immersion breaking. If you have a headset that uses Light houses you can use a valve tracker or if you have an index, the controller, mount it to your rig where its visible to the lighthouses, and use the steam program OpenVR motion compensation. Its the best and easiest that I've found for now.

The rig seems to be responding to the aircraft's orientation relative to the ground, rather than the net force on it. For example, in a loop, the pilot should just feel heavier (i.e. more force through the seat), but no fore-aft acceleration - so the rig should only move at the instants the maneuver is initiated and finished. From your other video it seemed to be doing the same along the roll axis, rather than modeling the lateral force the pilot would feel. It seems like the sim ought to expose a "net acceleration" vector which the motion rig would respond to, rather than the pitch/roll information, which only really correspond to the forces the pilot feels if the aircraft is inertial - which it very rarely is.
@PocketProjects
@PocketProjects Жыл бұрын
The sim software does actually output the correct telemetry which is Heave, Sway and Surge along with pitch, roll and yaw. All of this then needs to be translated to a motion rig software interface which then tells the rig what to do. All of what you are saying can be recreated except + & - gravity >1g for obvious reasons. Motion rigs take a while to setup and it's a bit of a curve getting used to it all, he's only just trying it out after having it less than a week - i'm pretty sure it'll all be figured out in his future vids.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. If you bank to the left at speed, (or if you turn left in a car for example), the forces of inertia would push you to the right). Steve, is that what you are feeling in your rig when you bank left? Or, does that need to be specifically tweeked in the software?

I would love to see you test motion compensation with the Varjo Aero (if even possible), but also other headsets. It is quite tricky with some headsets. I found that HP reverb G2 is not great for motion compensation using controller based compensation. Software based compensation (like flypt) is extremely tricky to get right. But i have a found a very good setup with my Valve Index tracking a controller or a vive motion tracker. Vr tracking with stationary base stations that only look for the motion of the headset, that do not get distracted by your surroundings and actually measure the displasement of your rig using a tracker really seems to be the way to go with this.
@alzeal
@alzeal Жыл бұрын
That's why Im pretty much stuck with my Valve index as I haven't found a better option for motion compensation. I use the Index controller mounted to the rear of my headrest. I want a better fidelity headset however I'd need a headset that would work with the lighthouses.
@ColinDyckes
@ColinDyckes Жыл бұрын
What about mounting 4 LEDs in a rectangular shape to the yoke mount table, with a fore/aft brace to the pedals mount plate, and using the inside/out tracking of this headset or the G2. Base stations are too heavy to get a rigid enough moving setup, but leds on a simple frame could work! That would solve the unwanted interaction with static basestations or background.

DCS world yeh that will be good. DCS is amazing, I've been back on it for a couple of weeks and you forget how good it is. As for ideas, maybe a demonstration of the platform on details like how it reacts to the input exactly, like does it move the correct way when you move the yoke, IE turn left and DOF platform turns to the right to simulate centrifugal force but slowly returns to the left to simulate gravity as the plane is 90 degrees holding in mid spin, etc etc. Just an idea if you want to get Technical for the nerds in us, and add a bit of bombage (if needed) to spice things up if you're in DCS. haha whatever it is, can't wait. DOF is the future.

AWESOME! Great Video! And come on, you are in the game!! HOW COOL IS THAT!? Question: How "in sync" is the motion rig? It looks like it is spot on, but I was wondering about VR motion sickness. Wondering if this might actually help prevent motion sickness because you get the physical movement to match what you are seeing. Or if it doesn't match up (like when doing a loop or roll) does it make sickness worse? I want one of these bad now, but wondering about the sickness factor. I got sick like crazy when I started VR but am getting much more adapted to it now and love it. Thanks for any thoughts or opinions.

Thanks Pat, I feel extremely honoured to be inside the flight sim LOL. The movement is absolutely superb, I'd say this would actually help people with sickness in VR, since the motion corresponds to what your brain is telling you, it's often the lack of real movement that causes the issues.

Since the DOF rig physically moves your body, and thus inner ears, I'd be interested in your comments about how it might help adapt to or mitigate motion sickness, especially for those afraid of trying VR because of that. Seems the motion matching display movement somewhat might dampen the ear/brain conflict that causes motion sickness, yes?

I have just begun using my motion racing rig for flight sims also, but I can't figure out how to set it up for a more accurate 360 roll. Right now when I have completed a little more than 180 degrees of the roll, my rig violently throws the rig all the way to the opposite angle, as it doesn't realize the aircraft angle is part of a continuous roll. I'm afraid he would need a bigger room. If the rotation platfrom is used for yaw (unlimited 360 yaw at that) a large radius needs to be cleared. In the 2dof mode matching what Steve has now, it would take up more room than the H2. But the Yaw2 has far greater range of motion: roll 40°, pitch 70°. That backwards pitch can really kick you to feel acceleration and climb.
