Every summer for 1970 to 1977 my mum and dad took me on holiday to the west country. Dad being a train driver on the London to Brighton always got these rides on a free pass. We always arrived at Paddington earlier and my Dad and i went to the front of the train to see what diesel we had, my mum always thought we miss the train. It was always a Western and I have kept my log I saw 21 in all many were already within drawn by the mid 1970's. In 1977 we rushed to the front to be greeted by a Class 50 instead of the iconic Class 52. They were all lined up at Swindon awaiting the breakers torch, thankfully many were saved and still run today on rail tours etc.

Another brilliant review Will, and I have to say I was absolutely blown away by that shot of the Western screaming over the level crossing at 26:05 - the sound was incredible!

Have to say for me it would be the claret red, as it would go nicely with a set of Bachmann maroon mk1s. The green is nice, although to me looks a bit military! But of course there is also the later rail blue with yellow ends, which would look striking with a set of blue/grey mk1s - I'd say grab a beer, put your feet up and watch some videos of the real thing, and see which one really stands out and captures the imagination! :)

I have their class 22 & it's a beautiful model. The western region hydraulics are the class 14 "Teddy Bears" (swindon built), class 22 "Baby Warships" (North British), Class 35 "Hymeks" (Swindon), Class 41 "Warships" (they were Co-Cos built by North British), class 42 "Warships" (built at Swindon with Maybach engines), Class 43 "Warships" (bodies almost identical to the 42s only built by North British & fitted with MAN engines I beleive) & the Class 52 "Westerns" which were the western region's equivalent to the Deltics on the eastern region. Though they were retired in the seventies because British Rail felt the need to standardise to diesel electric. Cracking review man

Western - my favourite diesel loco, pipping the 50 to the post. Fantastic loco, fantastic model. Incidentally, the Western was styled so that the body sides matched the Mk 1 coaching stock profile at that time.

InterCity82 . They often made it as far as Birmingham and Fishguard in Wales too. I noticed the cab lights. Imagine it chipped and with sound! Stunning model, stunning real-life loco.

Really love the slotted valance for the coupler, Dapol have done well to maintain the correct look of the loco doing that. Even better that you can change them! Dapol and Heljan, sure know how to do boxes as well don't they! Enjoyed the lesson on the background of the loco too.

Hi! First of all, I have to say that you make a fantastic job and I really spent a good time watching all your videos! I discover the british Railways with "Train simulator Railworks" and I LOOOOOOVe to drive your smelly and noisy diesel engines , they are fantastic! I'm from Belgium, and in the continent people focus on german, french and of course belgian railways, really stunning models indeed with a lot a details, but so expensive that often we can't afford ! It's really nice to discover all the models in your videos, and when you open the boxes, the pleasure you have to just look and discover all the details....... Like all the train lovers.... Does the 52 use a hydraulic pump to create pressure which drove the wheels or use two fans in a oil bath with a gear box on the other side?

Will great review and a great loco. I think you missed another pack of bits which was in the box out of the review. I thought I saw some etched name plates in a little bag just as you moved the plastic away from camera. Guessing that's what those dot marks are on both sides of the loco do they mark the nameplate position ?

Yup! Some etched name and number plates. They're for its original owner to put on. I would've shown them in the review had I noticed them. It just goes to prove how amazing that box really was/is! So much stuff you miss bits! haha

What do you think of the Desert Sand livery? Good thing there's the option to fit two couplers. If you couldn't fit two couplers that'd be rubbish because these were designed IRL to /not/ need a turntable

The start of every review features a card that shows whether the chip is DCC or not and if it is what chip it takes.

That looks a really great model and obviously runs well. I would like to see a video of it running fully chipped with sound, maybe even on your layout that you keep dropping hints about. I reckon that would be really good!

No Callum they ran on the Western Region of British Railways 1962-77 the area they covered was the west of England London Paddington-to-Cornwall main-line also the Western Region line through Wolverhampton and they also worked in South Wales.

I dont mean "I know this on because I went on it", I mean, have a look at it and say what you like of the detail, etc. P.S The Class 375, 376, 377, 378, 379 & another turbostar-looking train are Electrostars.Go to the the south of Britain because you'll see at least 2. They look like that 455 you have. If you cant review any of these ( excluding Class 376, 377, 378, 379 ( The Class 171 is 50/50 Electrostar since theycan connect. ) ). The Class 171 does the Ashford International to Brighton route via Rye, Hastings, Bexhill, Eastbourne & Lewes. The 375 is in SouthEastern livery. The 376 is also in SouthEastern livery. The 377 is in First Capital Connect livery, Southern livery & will be in SouthEastern livery when First Capital Connect loses the Thameslink contract. The 378 is London OverGroung's stock ( apart from the 172 which, in London Midland livery has a gangway at both ends ). The 379 is in Greater Anglia livery.

Erm the best i can recommend at the moment is to buy from shops like Hattons and Trident Trains who are more than happy to mail overseas. The prices are reasonable to start with so the shipping costs are barely noticeable. I might have to have words with Hornby about setting up a distribution centre in the U.S.! haha

It came with a sheet of etched metal name and number plates but they're for its original owner to put on.

There is a small mistake in your video - The Class 66 and the Class 52 'Western' have the same Route Availability, which is an RA of 7. So while the 52 is actually lighter, its axle load is in the same classification as the Class 66, so the Class 52 would be restricted to same lines as the Class 66. In the video you mention the Class 52 could go anywhere, that is not correct.

Class 41 / 42 / 43 / 53 / 55 also had twin engines. The latter two were diesel electric.

Another great opening. One small point. I assume the name & number of the loco is in the spare pack. It would have been nice to have seen them being fitting. Perhaps in a subsequent video? Many thanks Eddie

InterCity82 . That would be great. I bought an old Britannia model some time back & found the paper nameplates damaged. I loved the engine so much I recently bought a couple of etched nameplates but I'm a little bit nervous about replacing one with the other. I'd be grateful (& I'm sure others would feel the same) if you could find time to give some guidance. Many thanks Ed

It's funny how you compared the class 52 to a class 66 as westerns had the Influence for them. I once watched a video that said when foster yeoman ordered their class 59s, they wanted them based on the westerns design, and we all know that 66 are like 59s but more powerful.

That's a great model there Will. I am getting one at the weekend :). I will be making a comeback with my reviews this month but the test runs will be different because I have no layout and life has propelled my back to square one :(. Ah well, I should be getting one the day after of my birthday :). Oh and Will, when are you going to review a Hornby Class 60 mate? You don't know what you are missing buddy. I could lend you one of mind if you like :). Did you want one of my Code 3's or a factory issue state one? As I have modded a few of my examples :). Ash.

InterCity82 . Will, Trust me buddy, they are a cracking model and did you know that the Hornby Class 60 won the gold award for being the best OO gauge modern image locomotive model from 2006-2009 :). If you wanted the Hornby 60007 in the DB Schenker red. Hornby now has them back in stock as the first batch sold out in 2013 on mostly pre-orders alone. Talking of which, not sure if you have an airbrush kit or have attempted to respray any model trains, but if you ever fancied a Colas Rail version, you could always make a model of 60087 ;). Ash.
