Great updates.. I'm trying my 8' BC this spring, it's currently in the ground in zone 5a though so if i don't get ripped during the growing season i will be in trouble trying to protect it for a winter. Glad to see it works well though, I've been planning this flat top style for 7 years getting this thing from a small whip to a massive tree. Thanks for the videos!

Ha ha that's a nice motivation to get ripped! Yeah I wanted to try a flat top about the same time as you, but unfortunately I don't have the first hand experience with this canopy habit and I don't think I can do it justice. 5a... That would definitely need protection through winter. I currently have left the air layer outside, unprotected, surrounded by other pots, but I'm at 8a so well see. Thank you Ryan!

@@ArkefthosBonsai 😂 I saw that typo, not sure how roots became ripped. I've always marveled at the flat top specimens, I hope I can do it justice. Thanks for the great content, looking forward to more!

Very beautiful layerings, especially the taxodium, what soil do you use for the taxodium and do you keep them immersed in water?
@ArkefthosBonsai
@ArkefthosBonsai 10 ай бұрын
Thank you! The taxodium has a mix with the higher organic content than any other species here. It's about 30% organic aggricates from forest topsoil I collect. 30% perlite, 30% zeolite. I do not submerge it in water, I just water it more than others. Plus, some shade in the hot summer months, to protect the bark. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing ! Sure some of the most chilling and satisfying moments in a bonsai year. Did the big surface roots on the taxodium really develop in only one season? Cheers !

❤ Love the tranquility of your videos, do you live around the Arkefthos Mountains in Greece?
@ArkefthosBonsai
@ArkefthosBonsai 10 ай бұрын
Thank you Weasley! I'm not aware of any mountain called Arkefthos in Greece. Arkefthos is the ancient Greek word for juniper, so that's where this name comes from. I live in the Peloponnese peninsula, in Southern Greece, up in the mountains. Have a nice day!

@@ArkefthosBonsai Ah! I had a google fail, its a hotel near Astraka Mountain😂 "Located in the scenic Papingo Village, the stone-built Arkefthos is a boutique hotel features a classically decorated snack bar with fireplace and jukebox. It offers free Wi-Fi in all areas and rooms with views over Astraka Mountain" you are truly blessed to live in such a beautiful place.

Well, while astrakas mountain is a beautiful mountain, it is very far away from me as it it quite north, close to the border with Albania. I'm south, closer to Africa! Cheers!

Fantastic results and so well presented. I have struggled with hornbeam airlayers - not sure why they are so difficult? Cheers

Thank you Xavier! Some genus rely on seed propagation, so their hormonal balance leans towards foliar growth rather than rooting. It actually has nothing to do with your skills, or mine, or anyone's. Definitely next time, try to find a stronger (more expensive) rooting hormone and lots of patience!

Nice one but look like lot of bonsai people have that habit to collect more and more trees each air layer is exiting each new tree is challenge then you end up like me with 1500 Ficus trees and who knows how much are they out side . 😀

Great!!👌👏👏 The soil is zeolit or Pumice???
@ArkefthosBonsai
@ArkefthosBonsai 10 ай бұрын
Thank you Christian! I use zeolite and perlite with a small percentage of organic aggricates, topsoil from the forest. I use pure pumice on trees I dig from the ground. Cheers!

How long does it take for such a big airlayer to root?
@ArkefthosBonsai
@ArkefthosBonsai 10 ай бұрын
I explain everything in captions - subtitles and I've shown everything in 2 previous videos about this tree. This was airlayered in late spring of 2022. It took 2 seasons to root as first summer did not produced any roots. This summer it had some poking through the moss. 3 months later they are as you see. Cheers!
