Very beautiful trees and very good video 👌 I like these white (ish) pots for these trees. Especially the large one looks perfect in it (as you also mentioned). I’m very happy with your voiceover. Great idea about the net over the pot! Literally every day in spring and summer I have to replace moss because the birds go looking for insects in the bonsai soil. It drives me crazy.

Thank you! But it's not only the moss, they break the bark of mature pines as well and that drops the aesthetic value of the tree dramatically. I have some more ideas that I need to experiment with.... Cheers!

Thank you Wesley! Yes it is! That was a 3.5m (11ft) tall trunk back then. I do believe the massive amount of foliage on it helped create a huge amount of roots before separation and maintained a good root growth. But handling an air layer that tall is a nightmare... Have a great Sunday!

Hi, Fotis - the voice-over seems, at times, a bit staccato and could flow a little more but, personally, I like it as your English is way better than my Greek. Loved both of the trees, especially how you manage to get the roots growing so radially. That is a technique I am working on. 😁

Yeah, I'm working on the staccato issue!! As far as roots are concerned, I've found out that bigger air layers with lots of foliage, produce more roots within 2 or 3 months. Then it is just spending time in stabilizing the tree to the pot and work them out radially year after year. Thank you John!

Thank you Pablo! Of course, for medium I use zeolite, pumice, perlite ( all look white - ish) and the darker pieces are organic aggricates, topsoil from the forest floor, above the garden. Semi composted pieces of babies needles, cones and bark. Cheers!

Obviously you know what you are doing because the trees look great. I am surprised to see how many leaves are already showing and you still are repotting. Interesting to me because I am always worried about being too late and I would be afraid to go forward with the repot if my trees looked like yours. Nice to see so now maybe I can relax a little. 🙂 One question.. I have a lot of JapMap air layers as well. Looks like I use the same technique as you (moss ball). My question is.. what is your process once you separate the airlayer from the mother tree? Do you have a video of that? I ask because my airlayers have a tangled mass of roots that I am to afraid to straighten because I don’t want to break them. Curious about what you do. Thanks!

Thank you for your comment! As far as repotting Japanese maples goes, you can safely repot them with such open leaves, as long as there is some basic aftercare. Not exposed in heatwaves, not drying out, maybe some foliage misting in the heat of noon. In fact, older trees should be repotted "late" as this is safer for them. You'll be surprised how few roots you can leave on a Japanese maple and as long as it has some open leaves, cool temperatures and humidity, the root system replenishes amazingly fast. Now, about airlayers. Yes the new roots are fragile but if you are gentle you can work these, again, aftercare is the key. If the trees stay immobile, away from winds, hot weather and dryness, they usually do great. If you are on the safe side, you separate them in September, pot them in training pots and work the roots as you do in normal trees next spring. They have hardened by then and you can safely abuse them!
