The author of the Polar Express book, Chris Van Allsburg, wrote a series of great almost Twilight Zone-esque children's books with semi-dark and borderline haunting tales. Jumanji was another of his stories, and there are plenty of great other ones to read too, never mind the great illustrations. The Polar Express is no different than his others.

I knew The Oak was going to love this one. I am so glad you all liked it. Our local train company has a Polar Express trip every year, They do everything including the hot chocolate song, ticket punching, then they arrive at ‘the North Pole’ and get gifts from Santa and take pictures. It is a night to remember every year.

One small note on Oak’s message. If your born into family is not good for your (physical, mental, and/or emotional) health, they do not need to be the family that you spend time with. Found family can sometimes be just as good or better than birth family.

As a kid there was (sort of) a ride for it in my area run by Jordan's Furniture lol It was called the M.O.M. ride. It's basically a big 4D-specific theatre with seats that lifted and moved along with the movie sequence. They also pumped the smell of hot chocolate into the room, had cool gusts of 'wind', and snow fell from the ceiling :)

"The Polar Express" was a movie adapted from the book of the same name, and is one of the coolest children's books ever put to print. I vividly remember storytime in the library in 1st grade, and how quiet everyone was because the artwork was so mesmerizing. There was a definite air of both darkness and mystery to it, and years later, when it was adapted into a movie and the trailer dropped for it, just...duuuuude ❤ Went to see it with my grandma, and yes, that train sequence on the ice was every bit as awesome on the big screen as you would think! Imho it is one of the best book to movie adaptations of all time. They really captured the _look_ and inexplicable, almost scary vibe that the book had. I know the movie gets crapped on, a bit unfairly I think, for it's early use of imperfect mocap and goofy facial animation. I believe the studio had lost so much money on it due to that fact alone that it had to shut down, which is a shame - with time and practice, I think they would have gotten much better and produced some real art. :/ At 30, this is in my top 3 Favorite Christmas Movies, to this day.❤

This movie is based upon Chris Van Allsburg's book. He also did the illustrations in the book, and the movie animation looks very much like the pictures in the book. Van Allsburg is from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and that is why it is mentioned as the hometown of the boy in the movie. Van Allsburg also wrote and illustrated the book Jumanji which has been turned into a movie as well.

The way I always saw it: The Conductor = The Ghost of Christmas Past or the innocent belief in Christmas Santa = The Ghost of Christmas Present or the joy of Christmas The Ghost = The Ghost of Christmas Future or Harsh Skepticism A lot of the lines make more sense assuming this like the ghost saint “seeing is believing” and the Conductor saying “you don’t always need to see to believe”. It also explains why Hero boy saw an older version of himself; it’s the version of him that continues to believe. Also why the older version is voiced by Tom Hanks.

Fun fact: the ghost on the train used to be a kid that would hop on for free since the train never stopped at his house. While he was riding on top he saw flat to tunnel and started running to the front, but got killed by the top of the tunnel. That how he knew the tunnel clearance was only 1 inches and that you had to jump to make it into the coal car without dying. There’s a deleted scene that explain all thing you can find on KZfaq. Fun fact 2: when the ticket is flying around and it falls in-front of the train, the polar express seems to come out of nowhere. If you look closely you can see that the light wasn’t working until just before it hit the ticket. That why the engineers had to change the light, and leave the girl to drive the train.

I love this movie; remember seeing it with my step-grandfather, and was a real treat. This was one of Robert Zemeckis' many film forays into motion animation before finally going back to live action with the 2012 film, Flight (with a fantastic award nominated performance by Denzel Washington). The technology for motion animation was just coming around strong, so he took to it like wildfire. While it was praised for looking really good at the time, people complained mainly about the characters having soulless looking eyes. (P.S. Tom Hanks voices the conducter, the hobo on top of the train, Santa Clause, and the boy himself as well. (Plus the boy's father.))

My wife is the manager of the deli at a local family store. One of her workers usually walks the couple miles to work because his truck needs fixed, he's also helping to support his wife's parents, and it's just a rough time and he mentioned he wasn't sure what Christmas was going to be like for his 3 kids. So my wife and one of her other workers are surprising him with a couple of small presents for each of his kids. It's not much, think we spent around $20 for each kid, but they'll be super excited. My wife knows he's going to be upset that we did it because he's proud like that but know he's also going to be grateful as well because he wants his kids to be happy.

I'm not sure why, maybe it's because of everything I've seen and experienced in my now 56 years, but I've gotten more sensitive and sentimental. This is one of an untold number of movies, especially Christmas films, that I'll become overwhelmed with emotion at certain points. I still love this movie, even though my boys have rolled their eyes at it for several years now. No, it's not perfect, but you just have to let go of the intricacies and let yourself go with the bigger story. Merry Christmas!

The Know-It-All kid’s voice is familiar because it’s the same voice actor that played Mandark in Dexter’s Laboratory. 😂 He also played the nerd in Grease. This was definitely early mo-cap. I actually enjoyed it . Because it’s early tech, faces couldnt be articulated the way they are currently, but I didnt really notice until years later that it falls into the “uncanny valley” of CGI. I was a senior in hs when I saw this but hadn’t really grown up with the picture book, so it’s not really that nostalgic for me, but overall I thought it was beautiful. I especially loved seeing the rollercoaster scene in theaters on IMAX.

You hear the conductor repeatedly say how they're going to be late and arriving 5 minutes late, aka 5 minutes till midnight. If you look at the clock in the elf town square, the same time. The kids, when in the santa bag, were about to go over the tree and the hero girl says, "Its still 5 to. Were going to make it" The know it all kid telling the conductor how it is only 5 till, that theyre not late, and the conductor says, "Exactly!" With the many hints, the kids were only gone 5 minutes as time froze for them. Which is added humor with the conductor worrying about being on time.

Oak I think you are wearing the perfect Christmas shirt for this movie. Die Hard is definitely about family and protecting what is important.

If you get a chance to see this in IMax...DO IT! The 3D is amazing. Saw this when it came out...with my then 17 year old son...we were grabbing for the ticket as it flew around, I literally had to sit on my hands. Now, to Oak's message...my son is gone now. I lost him a couple years after seeing this movie with him. I will always cherish sharing this movie with him. You only have one family...relish in every memory you can share, and make more every chance you get.

I don't know if this has been said, but the movie was in Imax 3D when I saw it. You can really tell that's what it was designed for with the rollercoaster type shots.

It’s heavily speculated that the train conductor and the ghost have a much stronger connection to the boy than meets the eye. It’s said that the conductor is one version of the boy grown up, the version which got on the train and believed until the end of time, continuing to help other kids into believing and giving them a Christmas that they deserve, influenced by his time spent with Billy. Contrastingly, the ghost is the version of the boy who chose to not run after the train and get on, who forever doubted and speculated, so obsessed with ‘seeing’ that he haunted the polar express for eternity with the regret that he never got to see the wonders and truths at the end of the tracks. This could be why the ghost helped the boy so much in his journey to believing, because he knew his fate if he chose otherwise. This is further hinted by Tom Hanks voicing both the conductor and the ghost, along with the conductor’s line: “It doesn’t matter where you’re going, all that matters is if you choose to get on.”

This was the movie that might have helped me to love trains 🚂. Now, I know it has (some) inaccuracies, but I can’t help but smile whenever I watch it!

Btw this came out the year I was born. I was a picky move watcher growing up. I only watched movies from the 90s and before. This was one of the few children's movies I watched. And we e watched it every Christmas no matter what.

I was 20 when this was released, and still went to the theater to see this with my mother. I wasn't half the Christmas nut as I am now, just curious to new sort of animation I guess. It went to be an instant Christmas classic in my country. The train also holds a flux capasitor thanks to Zemeckis. 😄

This is such a great movie. I loved the book growing up. For the past 14 years our local railroad museum has done a Polar Express train ride for people that my family has done every year. The ride lasts an hour and they take everyone to the “North Pole” where Santa comes aboard and gives everyone a bell. During the ride they serve hot chocolate and cookies. They have dancers come through dancing to the hot chocolate song and the hobo arrives throughout the trip talking to the kids. The ride to the “North Pole” they read the story to everyone and the ride back they play Christmas carols for everyone to sing along to.

Fun fact: The actor Eddie Deezen who plays the kid @ 6:54 is from my hometown, he also played in Grease as well. With that said, he has been caught up in a lot of controversy in my hometown because of the fact he has been sexually harassing female restuarnt workers and women around town. He was arrested at one of these resturants and charged with second-degree assault, disorderly conduct and trespassing. He was also arrested for burglary and tresspassing at the local nursing home a few months later. Really hope he gets the help he needs because after his mother's death he really hasn't been doing well, but that still doesn't excuse what he's been doing! Eddie is one of two famous people from my hometown, the other being William H. Macy who plays as Frank Gallagher in Shameless.
