For most of us raccoons look like incredibly cute creatures that may qualify for an unusual pet because of their playful manners and character.
But what many people don’t know is that a raccoon is not actually fit to be kept as a pet and there are many reasons for this.
That is why we created a list of interesting facts everyone should know about these animals.
This video presentation may also be suitable for educational use in schools or just for general educational purposes for children.

50+ years ago, my mom brought home a baby racoon. Mother abandoned the nest, and the ppl sold one to mom for 5 bucks. We named him Pitty-Pat. One of the most interesting pets to ever own. I brought him to show-and-tell one time in my classroom, kids loved him, he wondered around the classroom, touching at some of the kids, they all laughed. We had him for some 2 years, then mom died when I was 10, and dad found it a new home. But they 'are' still a wild animal. I teased him once during mating season, and got bit for my trouble. Kids will be kids, right??

@@RaikenXion many non-human animals can experience and express both negative and positive sensations towards humans. Hello, thank you for your comments. We don't remember what statement you are referring to but there are somethings that should be taken into consideration. While wild raccoons are rarely observed to show aggression, provided their population is enough food to go by. There is a negative experience in Japanese prefectures that we mentioned in the video. The areas overpopulated with these animals suffer from harassment by raccoons (these animals were artificially introduced to Japan, so they have no natural predators and can expand their population even further.) It's odd to hear that such cute and harmless animals could have such devastating environmental impact.

I've assisted several generations of raccoons over the past 28 years in my private forest. Usually, I count 22 or 23 and they are always on time for supper. (At dusk). Later into the night they come to my home and eat some late night treats. Every one of them has a different personality and I can discern who's who. They are very timid until they know me and then they get somewhat chummy. I usually wind up smelling like a raccoon as they will climb all over me if I'm sitting on the ground. They are ALWAYS curious and insist on checking all my pockets knowing a treat is hidden within. In those 28 years, only one died from distemper it had contracted from a feral cat that died earlier. She was a very polite visitor as raccoons go, I named her Lily. Yes, they are endless great company when they visit.

@@beebop9808North America has tropical areas that raccoons are native to. It depends on how you define "native" anyway. They probably did originally evolve in the topics and adapted as they spread further north. Even into the 20th century they were mostly limited to the southeastern US. Obviously their spread further north since then has more to do with how they benefit from living near humans than evolution though.

Racoons are impressive of their high intelligence. I caught a momma raccoon with 3 cubs climbing on my tree. I commanded the mother to get down, she looked down , shook her head, than she harassed the 3 cubs to follow her down. One by one they came down with the mother being the first one to stand by to ensure the all the cubs came down. Once finished the mother raccoon stood up like a dog begging, she lifted her head up like she was saying she was sorry, than causally walked away with the 3 cubs looking back at me. One of the strangest but coolest animal encounters ever. Since then , I admire Raccoons and always be on the ready if I see them needing help of any kind. It's an Indian word. The original English word for raccoon was arocoun, from the Algonquian/Powhatan word for the critter, arahkun. This word was a nominal form of the verb *arahkunem*, meaning “he scratches with the hands,” referring to the way raccoons scrabble for food and tidbits with their little hand-like front paws.

Raccoon kits are wonderful pets. They're desperately dependent and keenly attentive. Normally 3 or 4 kits follow a mother (or adoptive human parent) everywhere and mimic her behavior. For this we call raccoons social animals. But it doesn't last. Adult raccoons are antisocial - that's nature's way of making them establish their own territory. In the juvenile mind something breaks, so it begins to snap and growl at its siblings, and even its mother. Soon they're so independent they must part ways. An adult raccoon's curiosity and confidence could be mistaken for friendliness if that's what you want of it.

Their body language was hard to read since their guard hairs were very fine. I closed the door on the two that came up to me & let them ravage my backyard while I cowered in my garage lol. Very cute & smart animals, even though I did have a bad run in with one once.

Thank you for your video. I love raccoons and they had 6 babies this March or April in my backyard under my deck. First time I was so scared but immediately fell in love with them. They are nice and they had a hard time to get fresh food so I gave them a cat food that I always leave it for the street cats. It's so sad that they can only survive with digging a trash....human took animals land for making a house and stores and golf... human are so devil...

When I was a kid, my parents were superintendents of a 60 unit apartment building. A tenant call to report that a huge commotion and screams were coming from an adjacent apartment and she feared that a man was beating his wife to death. My mother investigated the sounds and called the police. Mother opened the apartment with her master key for the police and inside they discovered 2 pet raccoons that had been left alone by the apartment occupants when they went to work. The whole apartment had been trashed. Every piece of furniture, drapes, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom were destroyed. The couple had insurance, but the company did not pay out.

They need water to support swallowing-they do not have the salivary glands most animals have.
@aaronwilliams1249
@aaronwilliams1249 6 жыл бұрын
That's a myth. The reason they like water so much is it softens the hard skin on their paws to improve their sense of touch. Raccoons sense of touch is very important to them and they have a larger percentage of their brains dedicated to tactile feedback than any other mammal. This helps them hunt for crustateans and other food sources in water. Their salivary glands are normal and they'll eat normally if their food is not next to water.

@@aaronwilliams1249 Correct. I own a baby raccoon and she eats just fine without water whenever I give her tidbits when she is up in a tree but she always has a bowl of water in her cage and whenever I give her food or grapes or just about anything, she'll put them in water before she puts them in her mouth. Very smart critter... she knows my voice and runs to me wherever I call from around the yard.

I was a caretaker of cats being bred outdoors by the Humane Society in Chicago . The racoons were abundant and love dry car food more than cats. Coons raid both squirrel and cat nests and will eat the babies. I didn't film any of this but am an eyewitness for years from 2010 thru 2020. Racoons decimated the squirrel population at Ken Dunn's Resource Center on Chicago's far south side. I saw it.

I seen a big one tonight on the fence it came out of a palm tree I was scared I told my neighbor to go in the house and I went in the house just in case but I heard rumors over the months since last year that there was a coon hanging around our home and around our apartment complex so when I first saw it I was startled cuz it was so big and it was walking the fence and then I saw the signature tail and then I saw the face and I knew it was a raccoon it was just a big one it took off down the fence it was at death so it was coming out to go hunt for food obviously I've heard many noises late at night could be from the raccoon and it probably has friends more likely a lot of those strange noises I hear at night outside it's probably the raccoons I've been hearing I know a few days ago I went on the bike trail I was riding down it and all the sudden I heard something growling at me I turned around I heard it again I wasn't sure what it was at first I thought later maybe it sounded like a bobcat but now I know it was not a bobcat it must have been that raccoon I've heard that this raccoon has been chasing the stray cats around here and all but one of the stray cats have disappeared perhaps the raccoon killed the cats and ate them I don't know would they do that since they seem to have an aggressive nature the animal looked at me as if it was crunched down I just had this creepy feeling it might come towards me so I told my neighbor he was a woman in her seventies just go in the house and we'll go inside and I called the wildlife sanctuary and animal control and left a messages call me back it freaked me out I never seen a raccoon that big before especially that close cuz I know they can be unpredictable

Here in Toronto, Canada the city is host to over 100,000 raccoons. Given the right environment and food sources (garbage & home gardens) they can grow to an enormous size. Highly engineered garbage containers supplied by the city have proven to be little challenge to the raccoons. A big guy that roamed our neighbourhood for several years, known as Rocky, measured 18 inches wide across his butt and I'm sure he weighed close to 50 pounds. They also can have a lifespan of 5 or 6 years if they are lucky enough to evade traffic, as automobiles are there only predator. They do make some strange cries, screams and growls high in the trees when defending territory and especially when mating in the spring. I'm not sure whether raccoons share the city with us, or we share the city with them.

I was walking my chihuahua a month ago. We saw a mother raccoon and two babies. I stopped while she and the babies walked past a dumpster, walked across the road and went down an embankment. The mother came back and attacked me. I was scratched and bruised on my leg, my thigh, my abdomen and was bitten on my arm. Yes, I went to the hospital A tetanus shot plus 10 rabies shots. They hurt so much, I cried. More shots weeks later. Beware.

Not always. I have a mother raccoon that I’ve been feeding out back for 3 years now. I know it’s the same one by her unique coloring. She is very friendly and will approach for food when I go out to feed the deer. We are in a subdivision but border a large wooded area of county land so there is a lot of wildlife . She knows the sound of my voice and will approach or come down from a tree when called. She seems especially hungry in late spring or early summer when I think she is nursing. Sometimes she will bring the babies, they will get scared of me and run up a tree. She just looks at them and keeps eating. It’s so funny. Even though she’s docile and friendly I respect her as a wild animal and let her have her space.
