In this video I'm patching a drywall repair on a textured stipple surface. The texture surface is the "knockdown texture" style.
I'm showing how knockdown texture can be repaired or patched and blended accurately and invisibly using a sponge.
Materials needed:
All purpose drywall compound
Putty knife and pan or hawk
Sanding block / sanding sponge
Any type of sponge -ideally soft
Water spray bottle -optional
Stay tuned for more upcoming videos.

Best video so far for knock down ceilings. Good explanations and down technique. Thanks!

Thanks for the video - it saved my sanity (and made my wife happy too). I'd looked at many techniques and specific sponge texture techniques but yours was the first to explain that the sponge needs to be loaded (i.e., cavities filled) before applying. The other method(s) were just making a mess. The was exactly what the doctor ordered. I had about a sheet and a half to texture and didn't want to get a sprayer. This is for sure great for small areas but is also more than acceptable, in least in my case, for larger areas as well. Just took my time doing roughly 3X3 ft areas at a time. I'm ecstatic!

Ok this doesnt look as challenging as i thought. The sponge method gives me confidence to install those extra outlet boxes i need for the entertainment center in my new home which has this texture, i was sort of putting it off because i will need to open up an access hole that will need to be patched up, this method gives me confidence.

...or you could just go out and buy a proper texture sponge for a few dollars... HOWEVER....this technique is simple and awesome! Before it dried at all and before you knocked it down it already looked 80% better. Once you knocked it down it looked incredible! Nice job! I will be trying this. I've been painting for 24 years and haven't always had good results repairing cracks in textured ceilings. You make it look foolproof! One guy on here said to not use a regular knife but a plastic knock down knife. Yours worked fine.

Thank you, I tried a couple texture sponges from paint stores and they were ok. I like making my own sponges because if the texture is small splatters I'll pluck small holes out of the sponge, for a heavy splatter or heavy knockdown I'll pluck large holes out. I just think I can get better results custom making my own texture sponges to perfectly suit the texture style and size, and bonus being kitchen sponges, when I'm done I can give em a quick rinse and then do the dishes too.

Great texture video with a sponge. Just in time. I need to do a small area in my ceiling as well.

Thanks. This method is a bit of an art, my advice besides what I showed in the video, is to take ones time, and don't overdo it. Better to underdo it, and do a second "coat" to refine it, as I did in the video. Or even a third if needed, going wider each time to blend.

@@Interior_Works The area I need to texture is about 12" x 48" due water damage from a leak in the roof. I've put new tape and sanded the joint compound smooth and level with the existing texture on the ceiling. Just hope I can match the existing texture.

I find the all purpose ready mix drywall compound shrinks when drying. If you level out the ready mix drywall compound and it dries it becomes out of level. When it is unlevel it will show.

That is pretty impressive and a great tutorial video! Not sure about Manitoba but here in Alberta mostly flat wall.....unless it’s a hotel lol. Eager to see more of your compound tube application videos. I’m not a pro and struggle with air bubbles, mud too thick/thin issues.

Thanks, here it's mostly flat walls and ceilings in new houses, but older homes especially 90s and early 00s are usually knockdown texture ceilings. Occasionally see it on walls too. I intend to do a full series, on all the tools from start to finish, and compound tube soon

Well done, would using a proset 30 set up too quick? All your videos are very well done!

Thank you. I've never tried with proset, but if I did I would feel more comfortable using a 45 min to make sure I have time to get it right. I also keep a hair blow dryer in my toolbag to speed up the drying for small patches.

Editing a silent video with a voice-over can be complicated, as the dialogue has to perfectly match with the imagery. If I crop or speed up any of the imagery, the audio timeline has to be re-edited to match the new imagery timeline. Anyway, long story short, the audio about "blending away.." was accidentally misplaced in the editing to about 5 seconds too soon in regards to the imagery. My mistake.

It might appear that way, but the tape is over the hole, under the mud. When I start forgetting to put tape on, that'll be when it's time to retire.

This texture and crows foot is a great texture to say "Im slum lording". these are great textures to say "I cant afford equipment for my supposed profession." Seriously get a compressor, texture gun and knock it down, So your house doesnt sell as a fixer upper. Thats ok youre not selling. Youre slum lording. These textures are great examples of the philosophy or stop being a poor. No one should be thinking about their wall texture. But there it is front and center. Reminding you that everything in your life is set to nightmare mode, Including your wall texture. Reminding everyone else youre a poor and incapable of doing anything right.

In my opinion, any texture looks bad. Modern architecture is smooth walls and ceiling. But existing homes with texture still need occasional repairs and patching, this is a video for that.
