@@OdinsChosen208 it sounds like it’s going well now!! There are some longish videos here talking distance with Nick. Running through those, with the relevant exercises, should see you well on your way! It’s mostly about doing the simple stuff really well. Which is hard 😆 but you end up with a very “clean” stroke.

Priceless tutorial Paul. Definitely Sexyloops its the place for my next question, and provably the answer it's already there. Please send link if so. Thank you! I'm a Switch fly rod caster from the surf at full time, anyway... I like when you mention ''line speed comes from bottom hand.'' Same here when using Switch fly rods or TH Fly rods. -If I want speed, comes from my hand under the reel -if I want power, I push from the hand above the reel How important its the hand grip on a single hand fly rod to generate power or speed at will, when hauling? Thank you again Paul for the work and sharing. best mag
@SexyloopsTV
@SexyloopsTV 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mag, definitely not my area of expertise! I’m having a 15’ rod build at the moment to (finally) learn it - I’ve never had much fishing use for them but I would like to learn now. However some of the guys on the Board know it inside out. www.sexyloops.co.uk/theboard/ I’ve learned most of what I know about casting from 20 plus years on the Board. In fact there was a top/bottom hand discussion again recently www.sexyloops.co.uk/theboard/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3552 With regards the Single Hander, it’s actually quite complicated because undoubtedly most of the speed comes from the rod (and in particular leverage), far less from the haul, but work-wise, it should feel that most of our effort is coming from the haul. Teaching-wise I teach think “heavy” with the rod and fast with the haul, but even then the haul needs to have feel. “Feel for the line weight with the line hand” etc. That casting drill with the line laid starting on the water/grass is a good one. Are you fishing for Stripers? Cheers, Paul

Paul,the only One to point out the pause after the haul while the line rolls out. Everyone else is going on about the down-up motion.
@SexyloopsTV
@SexyloopsTV 2 жыл бұрын
It’s a very good point and I think that the pause should be introduced very early on, because people ingrain the “bouncing” of the line hand, and then have to unlearn it. Which is unnecessary. I’m sure it came from, or at least was popularised by, Mel Krieger. I learned a lot from Mel and I cherish the time I spent with him. He was perhaps the finest instructor I’ve ever met. To get someone started it’s fine using “downup” - as in “one word”. But pretty soon you have to move on from that because it very quickly becomes inhibiting. For me it’s where flycasting instruction truly begins and not ends.

Any news on the spring balance film to show the pressure you can put on a fish with different rod angles? Showing my age I'm sure you will have something digital. I'd be interested to see the rods you develop from the low line weights to the rods for big saltwater fish.

Do you have a fly on the line when you’re practicing your casting?
@SexyloopsTV
@SexyloopsTV 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Cris, usually I have a bit of yarn on the end. This is because when practising it’s possible to push casting harder/tighter than you would normally fish - and that’s a recipe for a fly in the nose, or a collision with the rod tip! I also have dry flies with the hook cut at the bend for accuracy and Poppers and Clousers cut the same way. But mostly I throw with fluff.

Hi Jeremy, ok I’m not sure where you are fishing but we have a website and here are some links: flycasting www.sexyloops.com/flycast/introduction/ A beginners’ teaching from 20 something years ago (which I haven’t read for as long either :) ) www.sexyloops.com/beginners/lesson1/lesson1.shtml and a discussion board here www.sexyloops.co.uk/theboard/ It’s not easy I know. But it’s gets easer and it becomes an obsession. 😎 The tackle here is a 6WT. Cheers, Paul

@@jeremydelarosa7605 too cold for me 😀 I’ve spent quite a few summers in Canada however! In the link above it can be a good plan to go through the first videos in sequence up to and including the Double Haul. Most people seem to practise at first with far too long a line. Learning to truly control a short line first (say 10-20’ of flyline) makes everything very much easier and often that’s a river fishing distance anyway!

Is the DH important (or even effective) for Euro nymphing with a 20 ft French leader on a level nymph line and weighted nymphs, both light and heavier
@SexyloopsTV
@SexyloopsTV 3 ай бұрын
Phew, that’s a question!! Not essential. It does work and one of the best French Nymphers I know does, or can, double haul the rig. But most of the time not at all really. I love FNing and it’s highly skilled, but “fly casting” skilled it is not.
