Yup, that's how it goes. My first day as intern was a 24h-shift in a big university hospital. My computer log-in didn't work, my badge didn't work, and I slept on a chair in the corridor because I couldn't find my room... Thankfully the ICU resident who was on duty that night was super nice and told me I could call him anytime if I needed help. Needless to say I woke him up several times in a panic because I didn't know what to do with my patients... Cried a lot that night. Not exactly the best experience I've had on the job ^^"

Walking into your first shift is like walking into the front lines of a war zone and a minefield simultaneously but at least everyone hates you.

My first job as a graduate RN took me off orientation way early because someone called out. They asked me if I had an issue with taking the sick nurse's assignment. I was terrified but said yes because I didn't want to be fired. Just like that I was given 24 patients. I was not in complete control of everything around me

Another appropriate expectations vs reality skit: expecting to see lots of interesting patients with valid inpatient medical issues, but then mostly dealing with patients waiting for weeks on end for placement to rehab and nursing homes.

Mr. Jones' order for Dilaudid was accurate. I kid you not, some of my patients on narcotics had timers for their medications and press the call light incessantly leading up to that time. I saw most nurses try to punish said patients by taking their sweet time, then I met an RN who had her own timer and beat them to the punch. Said patients had zero problems thereafter.

On my first dayJuly 1,1994, the pagers didn’t have displays. They just had a static sound followed by the page operator announcing what number to call. Sometime overnight I slept through a page and woke to the pager still vibrating on the table. I called the operator who didn’t know who I was. I called around the hospital. Then I walked all over the hospital, basically making rounds again to try to find out who paged me. I became hysterical. By morning report I still didn’t know, but I was very prepared. It was a long time before I could even doze off on call again.

I'm an MA in Family Medicine who recently transitioned to Care Coordination. I worked the clinic floor for years. Love working with our Residents, especially our Interns. They're so young and eager...and have a lot to learn. It's fun teaching them the ins and outs of how things really work and watching them grow in their profession.

I have PTSD from my internship, Currently I am enjoying the stability of Family Medicine.

Yeah, the July 1 glow of being a newly minted doctor and the reality is a wake-up call. Worse though was January. Days were dark. Depression was real. In to the hospital in the dark, home after dark. Sixish months done, and too damn many to go.

My first personal experience with Dilaudid was during the process of clearing a steinstrassa. I broke the tablet into quarters, put 1/4 under tongue to dissolve and swallowed the remainder. Got relief in a minute or so and it would last 3hr. Always tried to extend the 3 hr. to see whether the pain recurred and sometimes I made it an additional hr. and sometimes I didn't. Then it was like throwing a switch: No pain one minute and a minute later severe pain and the process repeated for 3 days. I knew it would happen exactly that way but when it was happening to me, I found it really interesting. It's just like the books say: You still know you're having pain but you don't care...you're comfortable.

Looool I'm currently wrapping up internship and this is relatable af. Different ppl barking orders and calling u from all sides of the hospital fir certain tasks, not knowing what is where, half the equipment not working...

This is gonna be me next week, except I always knew it was going to be a train wreck

I am a physician who qualified 1992. I can relate so much. I still get nightmares. I hear them shouting "doctor... doctor- was so over being a doctor in one day - and when I gave my beeper back a year later - it was an amazing freedom. We would work 29hours on end without sleep. It was rough.

As someone near the end of her intern year, here's my message for the new interns: you *WILL* f*ck up. You will get yelled at and punished for your mistakes and others. It's an stressfull year, but it's also the year of the most learning your will ever do, you get to make new friends with the whole hospital staff (from the cleaning lad to your attending), find out what specialty you would like to go, truly live a doctor's life before having the complete responsability of it, connect with your patients. Just read and read again, but don't forget to sleep and go out with your friends and collegues. This year has been a blast for me, I hope yours is 10 times better.

Add- into this mess every, single New Admit yelling for their "Nutrition Orders" before dinner is over😡!!! That is always the Patients' very FIRST concern🥗😋~:)

Just past the 6 month mark as an RN. Started just before omnicron. I'm finally (within the last 2 weeks) feeling mostly on top of things and can look back at the first 3 months and finally see myself in this. So. Many things to juggle and so many medically unstable people I just didn't know what to do with. Living on adrenaline was not fun.

First night as an intern: Code blue on a non-teaching pt. who weighed at least 450 lbs. lying on 2 beds they had bolted together. Had to climb up on top of him to do CPR. Vigorous compression produced no pulse. Put a needle in his pericardial space and sucked out 100 cc of clear, pale yellow fluid. Got a pulse with compressions but couldn't restore a productive rhythm. Traumatic beginning for the journey.

That Dilaudid being overdue is 100% pure facts.

This may be cleverly relatable to those in the medical industry and it's done so very well, but from a patient's point of view it's frightening to think how stressed and rushed the whole system is, not even taking into account the whole administrative side, insurance, private equity, benefit managers, etc. It's a colossal mess. When will it ever be corrected? Will be always accept this messed up system?

Intern walked into my room and started telling me about surgical procedures that the hospital used that were not factually true. When the attending came in I told her what he was saying and she corrected him and sent him away. I then counseled the attending about letting interns in a patient rooms unsupervised.

I’m not a doctor, I’m just a nurse, but I went through similar when I first started. I looked around in my first emergency and was like I need a nurse, just to facepalm myself, I am the nurse!

Just finished M1 year but and I’m going to continue pretending this isn’t going to be my life in just 3 years.

More like expectation before 4 years of undergrad as a pre-med vs after all the clinical hours you need to even get into med school 😅 Did some shifts in a level 1 trauma center to get my EMT certification and it was barely organized chaos, doing everything I could to help the nurses, and getting yelled at by patients. In a weird way, I loved it though, and that's why I'm still premed 🤷🏻‍♀️
