I retired from engineering as a mechanical designer. If you ever asked a couple (or three) different engineers for advanced calculations for a given problem their answers would be all over the place. Their butt covering when asked about the differences in answers was always "I had to make some assumptions".
@jamesmatthews291Ай бұрын
And if you ask a physicist, their covering phrase, hidden away somewhere, is "...modelled as spherical [whatever] in a vacuum..."
@dylutantАй бұрын
@@jamesmatthews291 I mean, as a physicist, that's because people usually ask either the simplest case or have no idea of the difficulties in a real-world scenario. Finding the trajectory of a metal ball (approximated as point mass) thrown by a person (force/energy given on the point mass small enough to render air drag as unnecessary complication) is a kinematics problem that barely needs trig. Finding a trajectory of a realistic bullet in air (drag proportional to velocity squared, momentum of rotating bullet) with wind from the side (force over bullet's side silhouette expressed as pressure)... that's college-level mechanics problem involving a differential equation that will almost certainly invoke special functions. But to people who don't do STEM, it's often "basically the same question."

As a surgeon, one of my favorite pastimes is to needle my fellow IM friends, but sadly I must admit that this is not a phenomenon exclusive to them. That's also what happens when you ask your friends at a gathering "what should we order?" More options, more indecision, because nobody wants to impose but nobody is totally happy with the other's choice. Twenty minutes later, no order has been placed and everybody is hungry and grumpy. Voting on 2-3 specific options is usually the best tactic.
