That is how my grandfather put up hay and stray when I was 10 years old. He had me driving the tractor. You don't see this much anymore. The hitch on the tractor needs to be slid right so the tractor is more to the left.

At 330 look to be slid over as far right as possible, maybe an offset hitch would help.

My 1967 17 year old baling memory- A hazy 100 degree 100% humidity almost unbearable day baling oat straw with an older IH baler and Allis WD. The old fella running the baler had broken his hip and was more or less propped up on the seat. He couldn’t turn around or hear very well, so if a bale missed, I had to jump off and run to the front where he could see me. He also had part of his lower lip removed because of cancer but he still chewed. Every so often he would drool over the edge of the seat since he couldn’t spit. When the old picnic jug of water showed up, he was given the jug first! You just unscrewed the lid and drank from the open top. At least he didn’t lose his chew into the water but when I got the jug, there was a nasty scum! Thirsty as I was, I drank anyway. Thanks BTP, for stirring the old man memories again!

Did that with straw and hay. A truly UNFORGIVING job. That's REAL work!! Wore long sleeves so your arms wouldn't get so cut up and scratched. Don't miss that job. Cool video Jason. 👍👍

I don't recall the long sleeves, but do recall easily wearing out the thigh/knee on pants, right leg only. Hay was so abrasive, the pants would wear holes quickly and easily. I always used right leg to buck the bales, as did most of us. Sometimes, we would keep old pants around, just to wear on hay day. The old pants were already worn out some place else, so wear out the knee on the old pair, not a good pair.

Wow! Just replace the 1256 with a 504 with an umbrella and that was us! Our 430 was a wire baler. The problem with the wire baler is it left the ends of the wire sticking up and I seldom got out of the field without a bloody arm. Also, my brother and I didn't have cell phones attached to our belts :) This one really takes me back to the 70's. Thanks BTP!

Many years and miles behind a baler...we rarely used the kicker because of all the side hills in northern PA, and just had them drop on the ground. Someone usually had to follow the baler because the bale would roll down into the next windrow. Dairy farm used 3-4 Cs, an H, 460, 560, 706, 856, 966, and a CaseIH 1594. We had custom-built hay wagons using house trailer axles...some loads on the lower fields (flatter) could have 11 tiers with almost 400 bales (couldn't get under the power lines if it was any higher). Before the move to more silage and round bales, we would typically put up about 14,000 bales per year. Great video, bringing back lots of memories.

I too reminisce about the younger years of my life spent on dusty wagons stacking the bales that came off the baler, more hay than straw but also straw. As a kid balding straw was a treat compared to the weight of hay bales. As hard, hot, dusty and dirty as baling was my recollections of those days are still fond ones. I worked for a dairy farmer and always looked forward to lunch time when his wife would serve us homemade strawberry short cake along with homemade vanilla ice cream..........what a treat that was! An added bonus was that I went to sleep quick and slept well all night. Unlike this video, we had all John Deere equipment (2 cylinder tractors) which I love to this day!

@@sharpshooter7127 My Dad did some custom baling for the neighbor. Football playing city kid came and wanting to load the hay rack behind the baler to "stay in shape". After each wagon was loaded my Dad would put a couple of turns on the bale tensioners and pack the bales a little tighter and therefore heavier. Kid was wore out by mid-afternoon. I think of that story everytime I see a square baler. Miss my Dad.

I baled a lot of hay with the 430 we had. It never missed a bale when the hay was good and dry. But if it wasn't perfect it didn't want to tie. It ended up being replaced by a New Holland 320. We got bigger wagons and the IH thrower could not through to the back. I still have 3 IH roller bar rakes and 7 IH tractors. Last week I finished mowing a field with my farmal C's sickle bar when I had an issue with my discbine

This is how I remember hay making in the 70s - the tractor was a Fergie 165 but we had to lift the bales from the ground and onto the Bedford flat-deck. Sore hands, sore backs and and nasal passages and throats full of itchy dust! I agree with Morris below - every youth would be the better for doing a stint of this!

We used a John Deere 24T baler for several decades on both grass hay and oat straw. It was paired with a variety of tractors on our farm over that time, though oddly enough never a JD tractor. We often used a Case 430, a Leland 384, Ford 7700 and a few others. We retired the 24T about 10 years ago when we bought a new JD 348 baler, which clearly shares the same heritage, but is vastly more capable. (Many more strokes per minute , much faster and wider pickup with more tines, double the twine capacity). In 10+ years it’s always gobbled up all the hay or straw we could throw at it, where you had to be careful with the 24T not to overdo it, as it could easily clog). We used to go through shear pins daily with the 24T, with the 348 we’ve used 3 shear pins in 10 years, and those only when a significant malfunction occurred. JD still makes a fine baler.

Been running the 806 on the case IH sbx540 baler with a Hoelscher 1000 10 bale accumulator. Don’t want any less tractor on that combination, mainly due to hydraulic capacity to run the accumulator. Made 1400 bales of straw with it last night. Unfortunatly a pop up thunder storm got us last night and rained on my bales. Keeps it interesting.

Owing to the width of the tractor, the baler pickup is right on the limit of being able to pickup up the whole windrow - perhaps if the driver offset the tractor drawbar to his right slightly, it would give him a bit more leeway. Otherwise, a very nice set up, classic IH machinery doing what it does best and a nice neat job of building the bale stack on the trailer too - brings back memories....

Very cool. You are the second viewer tonight to post about running a Moline baler. I am an MM fan. I hope some day to find an MM baler to film.

My neighbor had moline baler that was straight through. No offset in the way the hay went through the baler. Never saw one like it except his.

My uncle had a IH white 46 baler pulled by a 544 hydro upgraded to the 430 in 1972 and still has it. My dad had JD 24T pulled by farmall 450 then upgraded to a JD 336 pulled by a farmall 656 diesel which I still have today, Loyal WI 🐄👍

Spent my entire childhood stacking bales behind an international 430 baler pulled by an international 806. That was our only means of making hay for many, many years on our beef operation. Wouldn't trade it for the world. Sure is easier since we got the round baler though. I mean, you won't ever get me back into that dang loft stacking bales in a 130 degree barn...

Hitch wasn’t in the road position, but it does look like it could be moved a bit wider. My dad used to show off that he could move it from field to road position on the fly. This really brings back the memories of my Dad.

Noel Martyn I think it’s just that he’s using such a big tractor that is much wider than say a 60 hp tractor that would easily do the job

Thanks for the awesome video. I've stacked bales on the wagon back in the day and don't miss it. And if I remember correctly, the straw was always ready to bale on the hottest day of the year. Still use my 856 and 656 tractors.

Looks to be making uniform bales. It's always fun when you get long ones, short ones, and some the size they should be. Especially when you're stacking hay or alfalfa in the summer heat.

Don't know where you came from there's 5 or 6 here in my area every one of them tie perfectly must be operator error and not setting it up correctly now I have seen some that prefer sisal twine just because it's getting wore down

I baled a lot with a 430 and a 440 and the 440 would miss the odd bale every so often but almost no problems with the 430. But I did prefer the 275 NH my Dad had to both the IH's. Could cram a lot more in it per hour.

@@Gilstrap2009 Yep, we were a New Holland family, too. We ran the baler with a Ferguson (no Massey, yet) 35 which was way too small for the work we were doing but we did get it done. Plus, this was on the awful hills of East Central Ohio. There was a lot of farming in that part of Ohio but don't know why. The terrain was horrible for farming and machinery. And, the soil wasn't that good. The best farms were in the river bottoms where it was flat and the soil richer. Going Northwest from Tuscarawas County the terrain got better and flatter. We would run the windrow inside the right tires. The Ferguson had an exhaust that ran under the rear axle. The heat from the exhaust would start getting the hay or straw hot and almost burning and I can still remember that smell. The cows were eating toasted hay and using toasted straw for bedding.
