Hi Dr Webb I'm really satisfied with your advices and your videos. I'm a Peruvian medical student and my main goal is become an ortho surgeon. I know this is gonna be so hard but every time that I watch your videos, I regain confidence in myself. I've never been in US but some doctors came from USA to my university and I really enjoyed them. So since that time, I wanted to get an American medical residency program, focused in ortho. Thank for your advices again! Your book is now in my hands!

From the research I’ve done and videos I’ve watched from IMG KZfaqrs a lot a Caribbean medical schools actually force you to write an exam before you can even qualify to sit Step 1 and if you fail that exam a certain number of times not only do they not let you sit Step 1 but they may even put you on academic probation or even dismiss you from their school. As well as they encourage their students to take a longer dedicated study period for step 1 than the average American student. So I don’t think they set you up for failure, I think they give people a chance who might not have any other options and they try their best to produce the best quality graduates as possible who have a good chance of matching into residency. Of course this may only apply to the top Caribbean schools but I think their contribution is important.

Something I'll add with the caveat that I'm not a doctor, neither was I a medical student. However, I worked with doctors at NYU medical center. It is important to be careful of international medical school accreditation. I know of a young lady who attended an international medical school that lost its accreditation leaving her in limbo. Only apply to established programs.

@antoniowebbmd
@antoniowebbmd 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, I don't have much experience in that arena but I would say the best way to get into a US residency is to find programs that accept foreign graduates and rotate there. If you can get more when one rotation set up, that would be better. Long as you get your foot in the door then work extremely hard/make connections then that may help. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions! I'm thinking of studying medicine in Italy because it's extremely cheap (maximum tuition is about $4000 USD per year, but it's usually much lower than that because it's based on income). The biggest issue other than paying for cost of living and living abroad is that coming back to the US would be difficult and I would like to go into a surgical specialty. I've thought that maybe I could stay in Europe and practice medicine but that would be a massive change and I would miss my family. Does anyone know anything about European medical schools, especially those in Italy?

As a veteran and medical student I would highlight the very famous military line " stay in your lane.". If you haven't lived it, don't have the arrogance to give advice on it. There are current residents that speak the opposite of this fourth hand view. Very in line with american elitism mentality. There is many paths to life..not just through America. With all that said: future doctors out there. Do you!;) " When you want something, the whole universe conspires in achieving it"-- Paulo coelho

That particular statistic about getting residencies in America seems to imply that all doctors across this globe have attended some Residency program in America. Is that true? All the doctors in the world globally have they all taken a residency in America? If that's not the case then there are residencies that are available outside of America.

Sree Reddy the top 4 Caribbean schools are Ross, St. George’s, SABA and AUC. If you graduate from one of these with a decent GPA and Step scores you won’t have a problem matching into primary care, General surgery, EM, etc. for the more competitive specialties like derm, radiology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, etc it’s virtually impossible. I graduated from Ross and Ross actually matches more students into residency each year than any medical school worldwide.

Here is my simple rule. If you are devoted yourself in medicine, it does not matter which medical school you go to. If you think you have skills in medicine, put all in. God will call you. This guy's school is disgraceful. I think most of the US medical students think they are better than other non-us medical graduates. I dont think so. Lots of foreign medical graduates are even better than the US medical graduates. USMLE is not that hard. Just study you will be fine. My sister was a medical doctor in Vietnam 15 years ago, she came to America and took all threes. She passed them all. Why people always say the USMLES are hard? The bottom line is if you dont study, you would fail the test. If you study , you will be fine. Keep it positive.
@WD-ti5cn
@WD-ti5cn 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately school is about test and the real world is about can you do it! Being able to solve the problem and do it with success should always be the goal. US schools are way too expensive and they are not producing the best doctors. This is about skill- If you work hard and develop your skills in certain areas you will become the best at what you do. I hate the fact that we base peoples abilities on a test- people cheat and yes if you take the mcat practice test over and over you will at some point pass it but it doesn't mean your not good or cant be good at what you do! Hard work coupled with your talent and a place you can apply it should be the key to what school you should go to, and the school you go to should be one that wants you so if US medical schools don't want you then go somewhere that wants you and a place where you can develop your talent w/o the scrutiny of professors who have a stick up there ass and only titles- those are the ones that networked to get into the positions they have but have no people skills, some how everyone seems to hate them and we who have had to take courses with them all know how hard it was to get them to reply to our emails- sorry got off track. - I made the biggest mistake of going to a college for undergraduate degree and it was a horrible experience but I overcame and got what I set out to do- they didn't want me as much as I wanted them and now I see what I couldn't see and thats when you are pursuing something go where people see your talent and want to work with you- stay away from the colleges that are superficial, you will know them by the conversation you will have with their advisors! Trust me on this- your a number not someone they see as a future Doctor, if you fail out they won't even miss you or notice that your gone! Do your research on the area for living, eating, traveling- If you can cut the cost of these items based on going to a Carribean medical school and they want you as bad as you want the training take advantage of it- I know an older Dr. who went to school at international medical school back in the 1980's he's thriving here in the US and he has no debt!- Its what you as a person do with your time and your talent in a place that was meant for you!

So you need to be good at taking test to be a doctor? How do you tell that to a young street kid with dreams of becoming a doctor that his standardized test scores are what matters more. This kid suffers from ADHD was born with crack in his system but overcame the odds by even going to. Worked 2 Jobs to support his family and was active within his community but GPA wasn’t the highest even though he studied his ass off and did horrible on his MCAT because he isn’t good at taking standardized test. I have colleagues from Hopkins who did amazing on their USMLE and aren’t worth a damn and can’t diagnose a patient to save their life or provide impactful therapy and I have colleagues who attended St George and are absolutely amazing with outstanding service and knowledge but were deemed unworthy because they didn’t attend “your” schools. Ross pays their affiliates aye? Well how much are you getting paid to spew your nonsense? I live in SA. I run Baptist Health. I bring in IMGs all the time. I’ve lived here for 10 years and I’ve never heard of that policy so perhaps you can enlighten me and all of your viewers?! People have prosperous and extremely profitable careers that definitely don’t deserve it and others have been vying for the opportunity to just get in the door and unless you can give both while being objective and honest I would advise against coming off like your “Prada in fruit of the looms” plastic wrap. I am a psychiatrist who went to Ross. I have 12 years of experience in my field and 7 in business management. For your sake I hope you never need a job because I would definitely love to test your “hypothesis”. -Clown
