"In the Pines", also known as "Black Girl" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", is a traditional American folk song which dates back to at least the 1870s, and is believed to be Southern Appalachian in origin. The identity of the song's author is unknown, but it has been recorded by many artists in numerous genres. Traditionally, it is most often associated with the American folk musician Lead Belly, who recorded several versions in the 1940s, as well as the American bluegrass musician Bill Monroe, who helped popularize the song (in a different variant, featuring lyrics about a train) among bluegrass and country audiences with his versions recorded in the 1940s and 1950s.
The song, performed by The Four Pennies, reached the UK top twenty in 1964.
A live rendering by the American grunge band Nirvana, which reinterpreted Lead Belly's version and was recorded during their MTV Unplugged performance in 1993, helped introduce the song to a new generation.
Lyrics:
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me,
Tell me where did you sleep last night.
In the pines, in the pines,
Where the sun don't ever shine.
I would shiver the whole night through.
My girl, my girl, where will you go?
I'm going where the cold wind blows.
In the pines, in the pines,
Where the sun don't ever shine.
I would shiver the whole night through
Her husband, was a hard working man,
Just about a mile from here.
His head was found in a driving wheel,
But his body never was found.
I would shiver the whole night through.
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me,
Tell me where did you sleep last night.
In the pines, in the pines,
Where the sun don't ever shine.
I would shiver the whole night through.
My girl, my girl, where will you go?
I'm going where the cold wind blows.
In the pines, ...the pines,
......... sun,
..........shine.
I shiver the whole, night through!

Nope,I came here cuz I was comparing it to the original cover that Nirvana covered, lol. Which was the 4th time overall this song had been covered if you count both versions Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter recorded. Lead Belly's 1st cover was titled"Black Girl" & later under 1 of the songs more commonly used titles "In The Pines". A cool fact,This song was already over 120 years old when Nirvana recorded this Unplugged in 1993 ! Crazy to think about. Pretty timeless songwriting right there.

Interesting to hear Nirvana singing a bluegrass tune from the 1930s. I actually prefer the original. Ain't music great?... and actually, after googling the composer, I see the song was not written by Lead Belly but was only interpreted by him. Parts of the tune go back to the 1800s. I'm thankful artists have kept it alive for 150+ years. Has some interesting variations that include murder, decapitation and a rape. Tells a great story.

Yeah, this folk song is actually so old and widespread that its origins are lost to history. We'll never know who really wrote it, or the circumstances that led to them writing such a dark, haunting tune. I like that. Actually, I think the song is all the better for it. It adds to the mystery.
