Internet Scamming in Ghana

11 жыл бұрынFraudsters in Ghana show us how they use internet scams to steal thousands of dollars from unsuspecting victims all over the globe.

While Nigeria's 401 scammers may have written the book on West African internet fraud, their shtick looks like Compuserve compared to what's going on in Ghana. Unsatisfied with the meager winnings from emailing thousands of random Westerners in hopes of convincing one poor sap they're the treasurer of the Ivory Coast, Ghana's scammers decided to stack the odds in their favor the old-fashioned way-witchcraft.
Taking a page from cyberpunk, traditional West African Juju priests adapted their services to the needs of the information age and started leading down-on-their-luck internet scammers through strange and costly rituals designed to increase their powers of persuasion and make their emails irresistible to greedy Americans. And so "Sakawa" was born.
Now not only is Sakawa Ghana's most popular youth activity and one of its biggest underground economies, it's a full-blown national phenomenon. Sakawa has its own tunes, clothing brands, Sakawasploitation flicks, and even a metastatic backlash from Christian preachers and the press. When we were in Accra over the summer it was impossible to walk more than 10 feet without seeing the word Sakawa in blood-red Misfits letters on a poster or tabloid, often accompanied by bone-chilling horrors of the photoshopped variety.
The government is freaked out because Sakawa is threatening Ghana's business reputation, the Christians are freaked out because they're losing money to the Juju priests, the press is freaked out because being freaked out is what sells papers, and the public is freaked out because their government, preacher, and media are all telling them they should be. All the while the Sakawa boys are living the high life and racking up debts to the spirit world, just waiting for the axe to fall.

I come from Ghana and the Juju priest called the baby "aboa" meaning animal. He asked the mother to give the child a cold bath. Down here people do not treat their kids like eggs. The treatment is a little rough, but not too rough to hurt the child. Westerners treat their kids like eggs. The kids grow up sensitive too sensitive and too entitled and have allergies and all sorts of schtit. Contrary to what you see on TV, majority of Africans are healthy and strong and will probably endure a lifestyle that will kill a Westerner. People walk more, eat lean and natural. To the Western observer, that is bad. In reality, the people in question are just different in a way that Westerners cannot understand

It was a sort of a bad joke that I guess you would have to have that scene of the documentary in mind at the exact moment when he says we treat children like eggs. Get it now? I know. It was stupid. Some people believe that the ruler of the entire universe, who's all powerful in every shape and way, turned himself human for 33yrs, prayed to himself, preached about himself and his other form, sacrificed himself into himself to forgive mankind of the evils for which this great god created, but rose 3 days later, flew up into a magical place called heaven and had people write a book about it 350yrs after the events but left not a single trace of evidence of any of the events especially his son's (him) sacrifice. My english talking is probably worse than his tbh, but he also tries more words which makes his sentences flow better then mine do. But in return sometimes he misspronounces a word a little. i taught this nigerian the apartment scam....he rented his apartment with a fake id then re rented it to 45 people taking a month deposit in advance before he moves out in a months time to go to a new job in a different country...the scam works as follows...rent a nice apartment with nice furniture all rented....then get a fake wife and fake baby and invite the person who wants to rent the apartment inside ....show packed boxes ready to move out at end of month....make coffee and cake for the guest....ask for one month deposit and give him a key and a depositi reciept...give him fake banlk account to deposit the future rents and fake name....take the deposit and meet other renters....take deposit from as many people as you can and then leave....the renters come at end of month and the apartment is empty and you move out before they all come at the same time...you are gone....do same in different town and repeat scam...make sure the rent you ask for is below market rate like its a bargain...they all fall for it....they will beg to be able to pay the de[osit to get the apartment.. ....

Tips for recognizing scammers - Check their fluency in English. If they claim to be from an English-speaking country, yet their English is bad, boom, scammer. - If they claim to be from some other country, ask them things about that country and say sth in the language of the supposed country they're claiming to be from. If they keep responding in English and ignore what you said, boom, scammer. - Check what they tell you. If they talk about serious relationships and exhibit strong feelings early on, without getting to know you better, boom, scammer. - Demand a voice or video call with them. If they constantly claim they aren't available, boom, scammer.
