Any oral history of Punk begins with people speaking about Glam. I always assumed Punk was an outgrowth of Glam and was surprised when people seemed surprised by this. Punk is dirty Glam in a way. Goth too. Dark glam basically.

Dirty Glam is a great way to put it. I played in a lot of bands in the 80s and 90s, etc... and I always thought about bands in terms of the "type" of people/musicians who were compelled to start a band... what was the intent? What was the dream? What's the message? In my opinion, the idea of Glam was originally meant to shake things up and to push the envelope and be a confrontational and outside of ordinary, etc... guys wearing makeup was a huge, controversial trigger for the conservative moral crusaders and the mainstream rock and rollers. Little Richard and UK art rock... Glam was rebellion and DIY and a way to fly the freak flag. Punk came along and had almost the exact same intent, the same focus on fashion and attitude, with variations that leaned into anger and DIRECT confrontation (the NY Dolls).... and then the post-punk thing took Glam and Punk and merged them with folks like Scott Walker and Jacques Brel and cabaret music and horror movies, etc... but still had that core element that was pushing against the mainstream and the moral crusaders... I always wished there was a better word than "punk" for it. :)

@@ConfusingAmbiguous-Burks-nx7jq@ConfusingAmbiguous-Burks-nx7jq Well put. I always forget punk wasn't so much after glam as it was simultaneous. In a way the punk/glam connection is personified by Iggy Pop's relationship with Bowie....
