For the wind direction. Instead of doing (1.) 280-180 =100 (2.) 100/ 2 =50 (3.) 50 + 180 = 230, just make it simple and do (1.) 280 + 180 = 460 (2.) 460 / 2 = 230. This same method of interpolating is used all throughout the POH for calculations.

Flight PLANS are just that, a PLAN. You can do all the math you want, but you still need to use Pilotage and dead reckoning while en-route. Also, this is just for the DPE. IRL you are going to use an EFB and let it do the work.

Isn't that calculation the same as the average tho? Same as taking for example: (20+5) = 25. Now divide that by 2 equals 12.5 which is 13.... same as for your direction: (280 + 180 ) = 460 divided by 2 equals 230. So either I am not following your interpolation method or your are overcomplicating a simple average calculation.

They are interpolations using known wind direction and speed to effectively come up with an average. As an example, if you are looking in your POH (of a Cessna 172) in Section 5, I believe (Performance section), you will find Climb and Cruise performance data. Then looking at your winds aloft data, rarely does any of that data match the altitudes you are actually using so you have to interpolate to get accurate information. I hope that helps.

you can also google linear interpolation and formula with the variables as x0,x1,x2 and y0,y1,y2.
