280 between 85 and 380 is probably my favorite single stretch of freeway in the Bay Area

It was great seeing my old stomping grounds. I grew up there, and watched the construction of I-280 during the 60's and 70's---back when it was still a solidly working-class area. It's so sad to see that everyone now accepts that place as "an exclusive playground for the rich". It didn't used to be that way. Now, looking at my old home, I see only an enemy stronghold. The freeway passes my old neighborhood, starting at 13:00. I was forced to leave, back in '99.

8:29-11:20 was the route from my grandparents to parents house back in the 90s, good times!

I-280 CA plays a significant role as an alternate route of US 101/Bayshore Freeway, bypassing the bayside suburbs and satellite cities on the San Francisco Peninsula and provides beautiful views of the mountains and hills of San Mateo County.

Bayshore was always crowded and bumpy with some very sketchy on and off ramps. 280 was marvelous in it's early days, no trucks were allowed then and the marks for the lanes lit up like runways at night with the headlights.They thought ahead and built sections with 12 lanes!

@@cynthiacarter532, luckily, Caltrans added express toll lanes on the Bayshore Fwy to help skip traffic because the hevaier the traffic on the local lanes are, the higher the tolls you pay on the express lanes.

Grew up in South San Francisco, Millbrae and San Jose 1954-1975. Watched 280 being built from scratch, drove it to Community College, when finally finished in the early 70's was so much nicer a drive down the Penninsula than 101 (that we called Bayshore) But missed old Skyline Blvd, a scenic 2 lane road that 280 mostly replaced.

My favorite Bay Area freeway! Sure I also love I-680 around Sunol Grade as well as CA-24 through Contra Costa County, but I-280 is a much longer stretch, and whenever the fog rolls in during the summer, it’s an “only in San Francisco Bay Area” experience. The entire Bay Area is so beautiful. Too bad techbros have gone out of their way to make it a greedy heartless living hell.

wow that a beautiful drive. I've only been to SF once in early 70s. We drove up the coast hwy from san diego. North of L.A. it got scary. the in and out the road did in some place, other drivers were maniac, wanting to drive 80 mph and try and pass you, with nowhere to turn out. exhausting and fried nerves. I wish now that we had choice a different route.

It’s interesting that Silicon Valley was originally called that due to the computer hardware manufacturing companies in the area, but these days it’s mostly computer software companies. You should do a video on the surface streets and show some of the company headquarters. I’m curious is it walkable or is it mostly sprawling business parks?

I feel like 238 shouldn’t be 238 and it should be renumbered to 480

@@tinwas_takenthe issue was that 480 had already been assigned to the Embarcadero Freeway in San Francisco. It was destroyed by the Loma Prieta quake and never rebuilt, but as long as there are people alive who remember its existence, I doubt 480 could be reused. I agree that I-238 is one bastard of a route number.
