I love Tom Howard, he's always a pleasure to listen to in speeches and interviews. You can tell he thinks about his games as a gamer, not a publisher. You'll never see a Microtransaction in his games for this reason.

Tolles umfangreiches Interview. Danke.

At first, I thought it was odd that they called Skyrim a hardcore game, but then I realized you can spend thousands and thousands of hours in Skyrim, and still have things to do. So he defines hardcore by not only difficulty, but more specifically, the ability to spend a lot of hours and energy into one game, to be more immersive, and explore the plethora of content. I agree with this, but it's been a while since I'd seen it discussed like that. (I guess this also means a lot of Bethesda games are considered hardcore by his standards, which can increase or decrease depending on the mods installed. Interesting, imo.)
@fallhammer6075
@fallhammer6075 10 жыл бұрын
I think when people think of hardcore these days, it is how hard or difficult the game is to win/progress, but with Bethesda games I I think they're' success has been how accessible their games are, even to a novice/casual player, but still fun for a "hardcore" gamer, especially when you start modding them.
@mastodonseven
@mastodonseven 10 жыл бұрын
I've never thought of difficulty being what makes a gamer hardcore or a game hardcore Hardcore game would be a form of larger, increased, faster, stronger? It's a word to emphasise this is extra strong So yer difficult could be in there But many things can it's more about once it gets to a certain scale a point Then it becomes hardcore in the respect As for hardcore gamer it's mostly throw around as a form of being elitist. You know I've been playing longer i have better stats a better system what ever A dick measuring contest that doesn't matter Wanting I don't know some kind of validation? I think the correct use of the word would be somebody that is really into games and puts a lot of time into playing them more than most And that's what makes skyrim a hardcore gamers game To really play the game not just rush threw the main story takes time and there is so much to learn the content in the game is hardcore
@Shadysteps
@Shadysteps 10 жыл бұрын
Fall Hammer I do think we need to get away from the idea of a "Casual" game or a "Hardcore" game, they cannot define a game well and can mean so many things. Games that are hard for the sake of being hard are not "hardcore" to me, they are often quite simple so they can spend more time refining game-play to match difficulty. Hell I consider Counter Strike Casual, as Its a game that you play for around 30 minutes and drop it again, its not a game that draws you in for uncountable hours at a time.
@fallhammer6075
@fallhammer6075 10 жыл бұрын
Shady Steps I actually do a agree with you. I tens to see some games that would normally be called casual, that I will spend long hours on. I just like to play games no matter what they are defined as.
@cozzbutt
@cozzbutt 10 жыл бұрын
Yay, discussion! :D Actually, when I was thinking about this over the day, I think that there's a reason "hard" is part of "hardcore." I do think difficulty plays a role, it's just not all that hardcore is capable of being, especially after hearing Todd Howard talk about it. The difference is, a casual player will usually play a game for a much shorter period of time, because they want to go through it quicker (they usually don't have the same time to invest as a hardcore player). So they'll play on easier difficulties. Whereas a hardcore player will most likely play on the hardest settings, because they're taking their time. Anyway, tdlr, I agree with Shady. I think hardcore and casual are outdated in the long run, and have a tendency to mean different things to different people.

The comment he makes about how memory can positively advance games is something PC players have mentioned so many times in the past. If a developer was to target large amounts of main memory (like 24GB for example) they could have a lot more working variables happening in the background of the game's world. It's a huge thing for a game like Skyrim or Fallout where they want to create a breathing world. It's something that won't happen for a while though because 8GB is still not *that* much memory to work with. Even less when a large chunk is unavailable too and even less again when a chunk is used for frame buffer memory.

There will be always a technique around there to hide something and instead show something else, save memory from an unseen or irrelevant things and use it for the ones the player focuses on. As long as the gameplay wont suffer as much it'll be fine.

In response to one of the questions in the interview where he asked Howard why RPGs have become much more popular as of late, I would say it's mainly due to the advance of technology recently. I've found a lot of people are put off by RPGs because suspension of disbelief is required to really enjoy these games, and this requires a certain amount of commitment to the game. As graphics, AI, and physics engines improve, the amount of commitment required to enjoy these games and this in turn increases the size of the audience by widening the "spectrum" of gamers the game can appeal to. I think as technologies that allow for more realistic games like better hardware and the Oculus Rift become more popular, the RPG genre will benefit the most, since realism is really the only thing that holds people back from games like these.
@Aggrofool
@Aggrofool 10 жыл бұрын
I think it's the accessbility plus blurring of genres. RPGs nowadays feature action adventure gameplay, which are more mainstream (Skyrim, Witcher, Dragon Age, Dark Souls) than the old turn-based stat spreadsheet of yore.

William Wood Before they'd *_release_* it, maybe. As of now, it's been almost 4 years since the release of TESV: Skyrim, which itself spent 4 years & 9 months in development before it was first announced back in December 2010. ^ At the earliest, we can expect TES VI to be announced by the end of 2016, if not at E3 2016 (which is already less likely because of the fact that E3 2015 was the very first time that Bethesda ever announced any upcoming games at that particular convention).

William Wood First thing's first: Bethesda Game Studios is not the developer of TESO. That goes to Zenimax Online Studios. Fallout 4's physical production was finished since before May, as said by Pete Hines himself. This means that physical production of TES VI will have started since April this year, at the latest. ^ Bethesda's always been known to start development of each new TES game _immediately_ after the previous one's release. Pre-production (planning/writing) of TES VI most likely began back in November 2011 right after Skyrim's release, and they've since moved on to physical production after Fallout 4 was finished 5 months ago.

I've been playing and modding Bethesdas games for 10+ years now, and you can clearly see how the developers have evolved throughout these games. They have learned a lot from their mistakes and have grown as developers. I can't wait to see what they have coming.

It was predicted fallout 4 was going to come out 2016 It pretty much cut that to 2015 and Maybe Dec 2015, Elder scrolls will probably be in 2018 or 2019 , Its hard to tell but fallout 4 is almost definitely going to come out first , unless They are having help from another company (obsidian for fallout 4) They could be devloping both at the same time but i'd prefer that Bethesda made both because they're my favorite game developers , mainly because of the modabillity they put into their games and cant wait to see what theyre making.

I think TES VI will come out two years after Fallout 4. There has to be many months after the release of a game before announcing another big game or else it will hurt the interest of the released game. Then, after making an announcement, there is about half a year before the actual release. Half a year, minimum. Although Elder Scrolls games are traditionally five years apart, I bet the sixth one will be longer. Skyrim was too successful and the mods have kept it feeling like a new game. I'm thinking 2017 for TES VI and 2015 for Fallout 4. Don't forget, Fallout 3 came out two years after Oblivion. Now it's time they switch it up and the next Elder Scrolls comes out two years after the next Fallout.
@marcosgriego2534

would say no to this because after fallout 4 yes they will be some what making it, but most of Bethesda would be working on there current game (dlc) which they do for about a year. then the studio working on TES would get more people to work on it, because obsidian making the next fallout LA or whatever, leaving fallout fans happy well TES gets a new game. I would say 3 to 4 years after fallout 4
@salasvalor01

marcos griego Essentially, I'm just trying to establish that the gap between TES V and TES VI is going to be the largest drought ever experienced in the series. And yes, it is because of Fallout and also because of emphasis on dlc. Too bad the dlc is almost always rubbish (by any developer). A huuuge setback (Regardless of who made it) that will probably be used as an excuse is TES: Online. I actually forgot to mention it. In all actuality, that might delay the TES VI beyond my estimates and into the Ps5 era. Perhaps we'll have, for the first time, an Elder Scrolls gap skipping an entire generation of consoles.

Peter Miller You're not making sense: Fallout 4 isn't even announced and you're talking about Fallout 5. Then you say TES VI will obviously be on the new systems, but there's nothing obvious about it.
