A splendid interview - all the more so because of the non-intrusive questioning that allowed Steiner all the time he needed. Not a wasted word throughout. Genuinely revealing of Steiner's take on everything that matters to him and delivered with such panache and learning. As for the academics who caricatured him as ' on the surface profound but deep down superficial', the interview confirms that their antipathy was misplaced and had its roots in something unpleasant that Steiner, to his credit, chose not to elaborate on.

Few modern critics can hold a candle to Steiner's chutzpah and originality as a singular voyager of the infinite noösphere. His corpus comprises mythology, philology, semiotics---before it became a buzzword---and comparative literature. He brought to bear the interdisciplinary approach to the examination of language and literature. A touch of froideur perhaps, but 'invidia' never tarnished his character. I have reread him avidly and felt richer.

Prof Sattar Basra -i agree that his mind is fully furnished with the best ideas of high culture and well versed in the western canon and enviable educated but he's not a first rate scholarly and has made no lasting contribution to the canonical thought that he's devoted his life to.

@@leomiller2291 I was going to mention him but he’s too much of a cliche. Besides northrop frye was the main influence on Harold Bloom and one of the greatest literary critics of the twentieth century. mikhail bakhtin could also be considered as he introduced the concept of polyphony within literature. George Stiener is formidable learned but as pretentious by most serious literary critics. He isn’t influential within the academy or learned institutions. Christopher Ricks is also another heavyweight name and one of the leading literary critics of his generation

If someone called me an asshole I would understand them, but this man, George Steiner could call me an asshole in a way that I would not be able to realise!

A former linguistic professor at the University of Malaya here who did his postgrad studies in France and is a music critic for a local daily, tells me that he gets a 'mental block' when it comes to Haydn's music. But I am inclined to agree with Dr. Steiner and I find Haydn's music filled with sunlit optimism,devoid of angst and hang-ups. I used to sing in a choir here and in 1996 we did Die Schopfung (in German). Dorati's cycle of the symphonies, Schiff's piano snts etc. are great stuff. sd goh

12:34 this video is watching just for the pain on Steiner's face in forcing himself to reference Harry Potter. LOL What a tremendous interview, especially the last 30-35 mins

If the good professor could lay his hands on a DVD of Jonathan Miller's riveting production of Handel's 'Tamerlano' with the forces of Trevor Pinnock&The English Concert,I am sure he would change his mind about Handel. And what about the perennial favourite of oratorio lovers,the Messiah? A work that can never fail to uplift the spirits in this secular age however jaded a person is after a surfeit of pleasures that bring only instant gratification but nothing really meaningful. sd goh (malaysia)

'Serious game' (26.40) is Goethe, Faust, in case any one is interested. I'm sure Dr. Steiner would be an excellent man to have a chat with.

Why does he say 'Don't make me angry' when the interviewer asks him to spell ANNA LIVIA PLURABELLE? He expects everyone who talks to him to be familiar with FINNEGAN'S WAKE?
