If only all of us had this openminded and humble appreciation of anothers cultures the world would be a place of wonder and discovèry and not one of fear and war.

Even in the past few years, China changed so much that blew my mind.. the cities become a lot cleaner, greener, less polluted , even more convenient to live. of course, manufacturing improved a lot too.

Mandarin proficiency is essential. China is not one but many civilizations, many peoples, and Hanzi is the golden thread.

Although speaking Mandarin is certainly important, it must be pointed out that to many citizens of China, Mandarin is not their first language and many older people don’t understand it at all. Shanghai has its own dialect which is often unintelligible to people from Beijing.

@@gryblk21 Putonghua is the common language. Chinese is the language of ethnic Chinese and China's minority groups. A dialect is not a language. Guoyu is the term Mandarin in Taiwan. And the script is the same, whether you interchange traditional or simplified or not.

I'm also fascinated by China but for different reasons and haven't been following it for as long as you. What do you think the fallout will be from the US attempts at undermining China? I become increasingly convinced that if Europe and America cannot find a way to make a relationship of peace and prosperity with China, they will become pariahs

Is the USA trying to undermine China? Or just trying to support friends that China keeps threatening to invade? Most famously Taiwan 🇹🇼 but really every country around China has border incursions and other conflicts. Chinese are great people and the culture and land are awesome too, but to clean up their international relations like they have their environment, they need to drop the policy of always trying to expand at others’ expense. The USA is not making this up. Just try getting to know any neighbor of China and see what their viewpoint is.

US government budgets a few billions $ yearly for their mainstream media to demonise China. Most of Americans and Westerners are still under d wrong impression that China is still backward without knowing that she has ways passed any big cities in d West in many facets. To see is to belief and not a single Westerner is disappointed after visiting China and that has rendered Western mainstream media’s false reports of China useless.

How lucky you have been to be able to explore China before it opened up to hoards of tourists, many Chinese with disposable income and leisure time, as well as foreigners. I’ve been learning Mandarin for nearly three years, but have not been …yet!

Can’t really agree with that either. But at least the USA supports letting countries keep their current borders and isn’t trying to rewrite history.

China is ancient ancient. ... "...it's the only one that dates back in its continuous development..." I have absolutely NO idea what this is supposed to mean. You're saying Europe didn't exist 2,000 years ago? Or that Europe stopped developing periodically? Or not "continuously?" What on earth does that mean? China was ruled for over 400 years by Mongolians and Yurchen.... but... THAT's "continuous" development by what metric compared to the Romans developing for 1000 years tracing back to 400BC? Or that arguably the Roman Empire evolved into the Roman Catholic church. As if ANY country in Europe had NOT been "developing," or Korea.... or Japan... or most of Asia for that matter. The simple truth of the matter is that _your_ talking point is some sloppy rhetorical trick employed as part of narrative subterfuge concocted by the Chinese themselves as part of their perpetual "Middle Kingdom" narrative..... Laughable............ "cultural anthropologist..........." pffffffffffffffff

Long-winded I know China or know it all comments, unless you're Chinese, you had no idea! Continuous civilization only means the country was held together with periodically time broken apart or conqured. It's our collective memories, we practice various customs from Han, Tang to Ming Dynasties, some lost, some remain of course! The one lost like practice of many villages maintain ancestry record for 1000 years until recently is the reality of morden world! Typical comments about two Dynasties rule by Mongol and Manchuian to dismiss Chinese civilization, those are of nomadic origin and to rule China they had to sinofied or will not be able to rule! Is like dismissing Spain's current cultures because they were invaded by Muslim and rule for hundreds of year! We don't lose our identity just as Indians don't rule by British 300 years very recently! No one is suggesting other civilizations don't develop. It is just in Western hemophere ebbs and flow of differences cultures is much greater! Just imagine the Roman Empire managed to hold it together until preent day! You wouldn't call yourself a Roman today, do you? In essence, Japan or Korea can claim to have the same long history as China. Only China is the elephant in the room and dominates neiboring countries when it's prosper! All the comments here are negative, are basically political statements based on consuming mainstream media in the West! Yes, they are armchair expert talking heads you listen to! Especially China collapsing theories crowd! Which is the truth? one industry after another China dominate from mineral mining, solar, EV batteries technology to ship buildings but will collapse tomorrow? Even Mao era didn't result in collapsed with US embargo, so? The fact US doesn't build anything anymore except military equipment or semiconductor, yes, I'm Chines American and truly understand both cultures! What if 10 years from now China also catch on those industries even dominate? All this talk of looming war is garbage! When there's war, whomever had greater industry capacity will do better! Just in WW2 US save Europe because of our industry might then! I'm not playing cheer leader for China! But just how skewed of these commenter perceptions astonishing me! Power of mainstream media narratives at play! Look up Mark Twain quotes about travel and go travel, son! Instead of thinking you know the world by consuming media!

You got it all wrong, it was India having 400 years of Mongolians cultural modifications, like the caste system live up to today's social fabrics. Mongolians did came inside the Wall and totally dissolved in the Han culture. Roman Emperors did not adopt Christianity right away. Please read up the Edict of Milan in 313 AD, and the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. Overall, Roman culture was dynamic and multifaceted, blending influences from diverse regions and civilizations while leaving an indelible mark on the world through its achievements in governance, law, architecture, literature, and art. But Rome doesn't seat in the General Assembly of UN.
