What would Henry do? Say yes. Show up. Be on time. Try new things. Dont be afraid to look foolish or fail. Be respectful. Be authentic. Be grateful. Be humble. Give it every ounce of your being. We all need to learn from Henry Rollins.

This is such an absolutely out of touch message. It was funny to see Henry essentially brag about coming up in a long gone golden age, things that most hard working young people will have no shot at. The Hollywood writer's strike is right there, record sales are a thing that left almost 20 years ago now although royalties for those people are not, being an author is generally no longer a career. The 70 and 80s are over and it would be great if Henry could connect his life experience to today's reality

He’s tried to explain why he never drinks during a show: he doesn’t want to break the tension, he’s scared that everybody might get up and leave if he bends down to grab a bottle of water. It doesn’t make a lot of sense, it’s some kind of compulsive thing. He really should take a few sips every now and then, not drinking doesn’t make him more authentic.

I walked up to Henry Rollins and gave him a birthday card (on his birthday) before a show in South Florida (early 2000s). He yelled at me to fuck off (because he was already late to his show from other people stopping to talk to him). I proceeded to fuck off. By the time I made it to the box office, the show was sold out. I was fairly bummed out. I guess my ex-GF snuck our names and my address on a business card into the birthday card envelope I made him. A few weeks later, I received a very kind and thoughtful postcard from Henry. His handwriting is just as meticulous and intense as he is. This is one of my most fondest memories.

It's easy to wake up every day and recognize when things are wrong and get pissed off at it. What is harder is to realize that the change can only come from within, whether it be personal, corporate, or governmental. I think anyone that is fed up with their situation and the world around them. Some look for the hard solutions, while others simply medicate in whichever way they see fit. (I'm more of the latter than former, though not destructively, thankfully.) Justin Brannan of Indecision said (paraphrasing) that hardcore is about throwing rocks at the building, but he realized that if he wanted it to change, he needed to be inside the building. He ran for and has been serving as City Councilman for the Bay Ridge neighborhood in Brooklyn, NYC where he grew up. Henry has the same type of mentality; yeah, I'm pissed, but how can I change that? An amazing individual who has had an amazing life.
