Thank you, Mike, and please thank the Senator. He must be busy, and he was very generous with his time. The F-22 was shrouded in mystery, and it was fascinating hearing about it.

Keep in mind the F-15 and other supersonic fighters like to break through the transonic region of .8 to 1.2 Mach, where supersonic wave drag is harsh on fuel efficiency with most designs. Especially F-15Cs flown in standard 2-tank configuration, they need to punch through Mach and get to 1.2 and greater to extend away from the fight. They don't cruise at Mach 1, so the fact that the F-22s had Mach 1 of closure is scary.

We have heard many negative things about the F-22 from the press and politicians, but I have never heard a single bad thing about it from pilots other than maintenance time. I'm glad his experiences with the Jet seem to validate this. Makes me admire the F-22 even more now.

"One of my favorite 4 v 12's was where we got cocky and arrogant, and just decided, "Let's see how fast we can just kill 'em all. We went right up to Mach 2 and just ran 'em down hard. From something like 80nm separation, it took us 2 minutes and 22 seconds to kill all 12, they never saw us or took a shot." "This isn't like F-86 to F-4 to F-15, that's evolutionary. This is a revolution."

Shows air superiority.
@LRRPFco52
@LRRPFco52 4 жыл бұрын
@@chuckgibbs5960 I've heard senior fighter weapons school pilots say that a higher exchange ratio is air superiority where they quickly eliminate threat air from challenging strike and cargo aircraft, rotary wing, etc. F-22 brings in Air Dominance where from the start, there isn't much you can do to challenge them, while they can pick you off at will. F-22As had conducted 587 intercepts over Syria as of 2018, where the threat aircraft never saw them. Had it been 4th Gen fighters, there would have likely been many skirmishes that would have escalated to weapons release and losses for the Syrian AF like the Super Hornet vs Su-22 incident. Instead, we have a merciful air dominator posture that doesn't need to shoot them down, since they can be contacted over Guard frequency and told to go away or be fired upon. This has happened so many times, it would surprise people, but since the USAF likes to keep its cards close to the vest, it says practically nothing about it. I can only imagine the threat briefings and ready room discussions in the Syrian and Russian Air Forces.

It's funny because... Su-35s pick raptors via IRST from 100km routinely
@LRRPFco52
@LRRPFco52 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-qn3xu5ee3t Nyet. Su-35’s OLS-35 can barely detect a standard fighter-sized TGT from frontal aspect at 35km, 90km rear aspect. That’s for a fighter with no IR stealth systems. The French Rafale with far superior optics and electronics can barely make out the F-22A within visual range on its dual-band OSF IRST/TV optical search/track/ID system. No sensors on the Su-35S are capable of detecting the F-22 at any useful distances, not in RF or IR spectrums. That was the whole point of VLO in the ATF program. We tested various systems on instrumented range complexes and already had a ton of experience with RF and IR signature reduction from several previous stealth programs.

Just love his stories about the F-22. You can tell that he’s excited to talk about it. He’s not the first F-22 pilot to say that a rookie Raptor pilot can go out and clean the sky without being touched. In UAE rookie F-22 pilots went head to head against the likes of the latest model F-16’s, the Rafale, etc., with veteran pilots and still came out undefeated. What is really scary is how well it works in tandem with the Eurofighter.

I know they would probably be hard people to track down and probably a shot in the dark to get them to interview, but on the dark grey side (F-15E) of the coin, it would be awesome if you could either get (Then) Major Chris Short or Capt Kirk Rieckhoff (or both) to agree to an interview. Both of those guys were part of the two ship that was in the air the night Operation Anaconda kicked off. Both later received Silver Stars as well as their backseater counterparts. Would love to hear detailed stories from either of them on their time with the eagle and their combat missions during OEF. Major short was also a prior A-10 guy. I believe Capt Rieckhoff left the service some time ago, I know Major Short went on to make Brig Gen. Not sure if he is still in or has retired. Just to throw an idea or two out there for some people that may have some interesting stories to tell.

Problem with the 22 is that they really were a ahead of the curve and too expensive because of that. The F-35 is the solution: it's cheap (relatively) and gives the capacity for 4 planes to wipe out an entire enemy airforce without ever showing up on radar. It's all in the sensors, stealth and datalink.
@mississippirebel1409

It's not like the US doesn't have a lot of F-22's, it's just that the US military needed more because it's mission is global! The US Air Force has more F-22's than the UK has Typhoons! But all that doesn't matter now because the US is now getting the F-35 which is just as awesome as the F-22. But instead of only having 190 of them, the US will end up having 2,400 F-35's! That's more than double the total amount of aircraft Russia has in it's entire air force and that's from fighters to transport to trainer aircraft lol.

Great interview, I particularly liked his account of the engagement over Belgrade. I’d read about it before, but his re-telling really brought out his experience of the “fog of war” and the challenge of generating enough situational awareness to execute your tactics. If possible Mike, I’d like to suggest that you publish the names & backgrounds of people you are planning to interview. That way subscribers can send in questions that they’ve always wanted answered. I’ve worked with the F15C community over Iraq and at Red/Maple Flag and would have asked Mike about the culture in the “C-Model” community. It has the reputation for being a “hard school”. A Viper driver said to to me “Yeah, those guys eat their young...” Perhaps you could link it to your paying subscriptions and make it a way of encouraging people to join. What do you think?

Thanks Nick. We do publish upcoming interviews in the “Community” tab you will see on the channel, the Facebook Page/group ,Twitter and Patreon. Also our Fox 2 and Fox 3 tiers on Patreon can post questions for each interview and we pick around 2-4 questions (depending on how detailed they are) that make it into the interviews and you can have your name shouted out if wanted.

Weren't the Serbs the ones that took down a F117 when they got it on their radar when it opened the weapons bay. Someone correct me I'm wrong

The joint foreign intelligence asset network helping Serbia had spotters near Aviano AB in Italy. That night, they noticed that none of the normal EA-6B EW support aircraft had taken off, and this information was reported to the Serbs, who then knew they could be more aggressive with their search and track radars. The Clinton WH also restricted US forces to a very narrow, predictable corridor for the strike packages to fly through, which was repeated each night. After the F-117s had flown over the particular S-125 site and headed to the target area, a brief glimpse of something gave a radar return, which was allegedly the weapons bay doors, which then disappeared. Dani knew then they were dealing with some type of stealth, and he instructed the radar crews to violate their orders and scan in a lower frequency range. As the strikers turned around and egressed along the same stupid corridor, Dani had his men scan that area in the sky. It wasn't until 13km (7nm) that they got a good return and weapons solution, at which time they salvo-fired 2 missiles. Major Zelko saw the missiles, the first detonation not affecting him much, but the 2nd one was close enough when it proximity-detonated and blew off a wing, forcing him to eject. Since the F-117A didn't have radar warning receivers and countermeasures, it was vulnerable when subjected to repetitive flight profiles. Had that been an F-22A or especially an F-35, it would be a different story. You don't want to be the crew of an S-400 or Pantsir-S1, let alone S-125 with JSF in theater.

In simplest terms the 15 was a modernized 4th gen and the 14 was an older awesome 4th gen. The 15 had newer stuff basically. The proposed Super Tomcat would have gave the 15 a run for it's money
