RIP to this legendary pirate !! Have quite a few friends & family that are Texas Tech alumni & I was fortunate & blessed to have been able to witness the love & support he had in Lubbock. In the end, Texas Tech did him wrong but I will always respect how he continued trucking on coaching. Funniest, most eccentric dude to ever coach football hands down. RIP

Being the "winningest" coach in the program merely means that he isn't doing a worse job than the previous coach. That only means something if the program previously garnered some sort of prestige, and, realistically speaking, tech has not been a strong program throughout its existence. No conference championships since the SWC days, no divisional titles in the Big XII, abysmal bowl record, etc.

Good Lord.

As for what garners my respect, well, that's simple: wins and championships, be they national, conference or bowl championships. Don't make excuses for playing in a BCS conference or having to compete for recruits with other large school or having a high graduation rate or anything else. Just win games.

Why reference Tulsa at all? That's entirely beside the point. But since you did, at least Tulsa has actually played in three of the last four C-USA title games, winning one of them. Don't make excuses about the conference. Tulsa can't help playing in C-USA. Tulsa just goes out and tries to win championships. The "widely accepted among football experts" refers to the concept of the Modern Era. leach's name is actually no where near me saying that, I don't know how you got that confused.

As for me being a hypocrite, as of late Tulsa has made a concerted effort to play big schools: a home-away series with Oklahoma and Brigham Young, at arkansas, at oklahoma state, a series with Boise, etc. And, as I mentioned, tech had declined a game at Tulsa. I don't think Tulsa makes any excuses for being so small and as a result schedules larger non-conference programs. Operating in the BCS that is the only way to garner recognition playing in a non-BCS conference.

Yeah, he can apologize for all those conference championships. Whoops.

I really hope that talking down to the smallest school to play D1 football makes you feel better about tech's inability to accrue conference championships. As for why Tulsa chose arkansas, that state is a larget recruiting base for Tulsa than middle-of-nowhere-texas and Tulsa got paid more going to arkansas than if they travelled to lubbock. tech also declined to play in Tulsa, if we're keeping records.

Whether you want to admit it or not (and being a tech fan does not help), money and recruiting are probably the most important things to a program. Because you felt wronged by being canceled on is of no material importance to Tulsa. If it makes you feel better, Army canceled on Tulsa in 2008. I don't discredit graduation rates at all but it can't be used as an excuse for lack of performance. I don't donate money to the football program for the graduation rate.

Since tech was around before World War II their history, just like every other college football team, was reset after World War II (the beginning of the Modern Era) so tech has as much football history as any other Big XII school. If tech's "history" you're speaking of includes few championships I spoke of previously I'm not sure what's to be excited about.

The pirate thing is more stunt than legit, let's be honest. Whether it's "honest" or not is immaterial. It has the same effect, which is "look at me, everyone, I'm a slightly off-kilter coach with a so-so team that continuously falls short of expectations." Also, don't mention "resources" and any sort of graduation rate. That is not important. Sadly, a team does not get points for graduating an inordinate amount of its players or the amount of "resources" available.

Yup, look at all those excuses I listed. They're all over the place. I can barely see they're so numerous. Kind of like the 3 divisional titles in the last 4 years. If it makes you feel better thinking tech has a share of the Big XII South, that's great. If that is indeed the case, it must be a piece similar in size to texas's. It must be the piece labeled "not good enough to play in the Big XII Championship game". In both of these cases, pleading ignorance doesn't make you right.

I don't particularly care what ex-tech players do in the NFL. Sadly, that doesn't add points to the scoreboard. Nor do the "star ratings" of tech recruits. Championships. That is the ultimate goal. I don't see many.

No, actually, tech does not have a share in the Big XII South division title. Oklahoma won it outright evidenced by them playing in the Big XII Championship. I don't care what your school told you. One team played in the Championship game, not three. Don't use time as an excuse. Look what Oklahoma and texas have done in the last eight years. Hell, even colorado and k-state have won a Big XII title in the last eight years. Kragthorpe won Tulsa a C-USA title after three years on staff.

Actually, you were the one who brought up "winning". Look, leach has a long and proud history of playing media darling and doing and saying things that are wholly irrelevant to football such as the whole pirates thing. If his team actually produced some legit hardware he wouldn't need to do so. It's clear that you're a tech fan so try to look it at with some objectivity. You don't see other marquee programs, even in your own conference, act as silly as leach does, especially with no results.

Being the "winningest" coach at a program such as Alabama, Nebraska, Oklahoma, SC, Notre Dame, etc. is a little more credible than being the "winningest" coach at texas tech because those programs have some sort of tradition and legacy of excellence behind them.
