That's right, we've swapped roles and just like the night that Johnny Carson was a guest on Letterman, Rick was kind enough to agree to an interview. He brings a tremendous wealth of knowledge to the topic of spirituality and awakening. check it out!
Buddha at the Gas Pump: shorturl.at/aM358
BATGAP KZfaq Channel: / @batgap
Main Points touched on in this conversation:
- Rick's spiritual history. The TM program.
- The importance of integration and stabilization on the spiritual path.
- The value of spiritual development in unfolding our full potential.
- About Amma (Mata Amritanandamayi)
- The masculine and feminine aspects of spirituality.
- Compassion, kindness, generosity, and such qualities as expressions of holistic spiritual development.
- The Association for Spiritual Integrity and the importance of ethics on the spiritual path.
- What is the best spiritual practice?
- Are there any detrimental practices? (Psychedelics? Neo-Advaita?) Harmful teachers?
- The qualifications for being a spiritual teacher and the importance of discerning between qualified and unqualified teachers.
- The importance of humility and genuineness in teachers.
- We all have different roles to play. Awakened people aren’t necessarily teachers and don’t necessarily use spiritual terminology.
- The relevance of channeling, mediumship, etc. to spirituality.
- Different dimensions of reality.
- “God” as an unbounded self-interacting ocean of consciousness.
- We are characters with some improvisational latitude in the Divine Play. The playwright has our best interest in mind.
- Staying aligned with the Divine “stream”.
- Trusting your instincts.
- Global problems are symptomatic of the quality of collective consciousness, which is trending toward awakening, perhaps as a response to the dire nature of these problems.
- The cumulative nature of spiritual practice.
- Recommended books.
- The importance of where you put your attention.
- The complimentary relationship between knowledge and experience.
- The importance of taking the first step on the spiritual path, and one thing will lead to the next.

@@niallbourke7963 ok. Agree to disagree. Everyone has their level of tolerance for what they seem stupid/silly/woowoo. I used to nitpick everything spirituality/nondual teachers and interviews said and did to try and find faults, to diminish their status/believability. After a while I realized that was a fruitless endeavour. If I disagree, I turn it off, without judgement. I've found a lot of what I turned off previously, I now appreciate. And I certainly don't judge an interviewer for a particular guest's comments. I look at the whole of the interviews, net positive or negative. Rick has certainly provided me a net positive, no question. Re: Rick saying thank you in response to him being enlightened, I'm not sure what else one would say, whether you think you are enlightened or not Maybe silence? But that would seem rude. Maybe saying/clarifying that being enlightened is no longer a concern of his? Sure. But I personally have no desire to split hairs or put anyone on such a pedastal as to expect perfect responses to comments/questions every time. Again, I look at his interview style as a whole, if it resonates, listen. If it doesn't, no worries. I think I pick up on what you are saying regarding Rick, he does have some apparent ego(tistical) qualities that come through, which he may or may not be aware of. But that certainly doesn't preclude me from appreciating his dedication and hard work in this field... For which the original comment "Rick's a legend" was referring to, I'm sure.

Amazing to see Rick in another light. I always hated how while interviewing his guests he would try to show his knowledge of the books. This is more genuine than anything he put in his KZfaq videos so far. Thanks for changing my mind about him. He needs to do more of these. He's got a lot to bring to the table with the right interviewer. Thanks Angelo

THANKYOU! Loved this. Especially the part where you both agreed on what “God” means to you. I had a sudden experience about 15 years ago and haven’t had it since unfortunately BUT it has remained my touchstone of faith ever since. I would take pages to describe all that happened in that one moment/ hour or 2, but I remember it like it was yesterday and I bawled my eyes out with utter relief for ages during and after it, “knowing” that everything is in good hands 🥰…..despite how it looks. I suddenly realised that this personality/prescence/love was not only all around me, but inside EVERY nano particle of me and knew me more than I could possibly know myself. It felt like a gift - the best gift you could ever receive. The gratitude I felt was off the scale. It was as though “it” was saying “yoo hoo! I’m here! I’ve always been here!” And it knew how incredulous it was to me and found it almost amusing. So wonderfully strange. I almost felt embarrassed 😁…..like….”OH! I’m a superficial, naive overlay to THIS”……like a young infant finding out that the innocent lies it was trying to tell had been known all along by the adoring, forgiving parent. I hope to manage to reach that mysterious place again. I don’t know how it happened but it seemed like Grace. Interestingly though, I had been watching the thoughts after listening to The Power of Now ❤️

The Power of Now came to mind when they were discussing what book to recommend to introduce a person to the concepts of enlightenment. As for a program or path, I find the 12 Steps of AA and Al Anon to be good guidance.

To your question Angelo, regarding ‘detrimental practices’, one trap I landed in stemmed from blind faith 27:31 / spiritual naïveté. Our teacher gave our group a line from The Gita to practice as homework - ‘I am not this mind, I am not this body’ - a statement of absolute reality, but no where near my experience back then. But being earnest, I took up the practice with gusto, & subsequently spent many years disconnected from my body & my body’s experience. Today, I am this body. And I just am.

Great interview! I'm just bursting to mention John Vervaeke after the mention of the Axial age and wisdom etc. He has a lecture series here on youtube called Awakening from the meaning crisis which was hugely influential on me and helped frame and put A LOT of thing into a broader context. For example the concept/practice of "internalizing the sage", it feels like I have a little Angelo in my head that I can have dialogue with after reading your book (it being written in conversational style magnified this effect greatly).

I've been thinking about the fact that 3 different and significant channeled works - ACIM, the Seth material and The Law of One AKA the Ra material - all popped up in the same decade and in the US; we must have shown promise, eh? Here's hoping humanity rises to this scary occasion - the brink of the 6th great extinction - as our beautiful planet teeters. Of course, consciousness continues - but we were given Eden for a reason. (Not alluding to the religious Eden tho.) Paz y luz. ✨🌍🍃🦋🙏✨

It was Alan Watts who said "hang up the phone". Conscious tv and the wonderful New Thinking Allowed by Jeffrey Mishlove are definitely on a par. Jeffrey has been going since the 70s or something. He's still going and has many wonderful interviews. How lovely to see Rick as the interviewee. I was going to say Fr Thomas Keating as well. And many others on BATGAP. what a good idea to interview Rick, he remains for me a puzzle. I was wondering if astral projection and other things are not the type of thing inside mind( even if cosmic mind)/soul (subconscious), and in that sense, not really related to awakening.

Great interview… I like that is was very honest and direct. Half way through the interview there was this discussion about the core of spirituality and the so called indulgent-woo-woo stuff. I just want to share a cartoonish idea that came to mind about it: imagine, in one of the higher realms where there are angels and all kinds of astral-embodied beings, etc, there is their version of a "high-spiritual" seminar. There are spiritual beings, angels there wearing spiritual symbols, practicing their unique type of yoga... And there is of course a being of light on the stage which just surrounds everything with love, light… And there is this little soul in the corner that has a question (all word-less of course): and the Master answers it instantly: Fantasizing about this odd dream of incarnating into a human form and living there as a spirit-filled gross matter is an unnecessary distraction … just merge with this light and be One with it… Well, isn’t a definition of a spiritual distraction always relative and it depends on which realm you actually happen to apparently reside?
