Bill Kazmaier is a legend in the world of strongman. As a 3x world's strongest man, world powerlifting champion and holder of over 100 world records Kaz has been there and done that!
Being mentored by Kaz changed my entire outlook strength training and no matter what your goals are, he's got something to teach you too!

Great interview, Craig. Bill epitomizes the fusion of physical strength and mental strength, both of which are necessary if one hopes to excel in the field of strength sports, let alone attain legendary status like Bill. Bill was never one to rest on his laurels. If you watch the interview with Bill immediately after he won the 1982 World's Strongest Man competition, he stated that he had already forgotten about his victory and was looking forward to the following year's competition (unfortunately for Bill, because of his dominant performances in 1980, 1981 and 1982, he was not invited back in 1983). When Brian Shaw won his first World's Strongest Man competition in 2011, I was present when Bill advised him to briefly cherish the victory but to then let it go, like releasing a dove into the blue, open sky. Only then could he go on to achieve even greater success. That is a pearl of wisdom, and from someone who would know.

Kaz got lucky. He seems to be in very good health still. A lot of people that lift massive weight and are super human in their prime beat their joints and bones up so bad that when they get older they just fall apart (Ronnie Colemon for ex) . I remember seeing Kaz in the old 80's WSM, and I always rememberd KAZ, Capes and Jon Paul. It was cool to see them all again after years and years, it was just like I remembered them. My three fav strongmen

great video Craig, I often look back on my own training, how I got started later in life, but you just have to tell your self you can do it. It is refreshing to hear more and more people talk about rest and not over training, because we are bombarded by a lot of bad messages "#hustle #norestdays etc etc, but a rest day of reading or playing video games, for your mind and body

Haha kaz reminds me of my uncle bob. Always talking about the glory days. How he used to bench this and fought this guy and played for this team. He's just a man and loves being one. Nothing wrong with that. Kaz should have a couple more wsm wins. I think it would have actually been better for strongman instead of making him not compete.

all i have to say, is get strong and big is in the words of larry pacifico, not how strong you are natural how many steroids you take . larry told me that went i broke national teenage bench press record in 198 lb class in 1978 bench press of 446 lb. I was taking 20-25 mg of d-ball and no shots . I work for new life fitness center larry vice president in ohio, and had a room mate of tony fitton was a briitish power champion in 242 weight class was a chemist and put bill kazmaier on all his steroids .all i have to say most powerlifter with any abilty with doses that bill was taking should be world strongestman..

Geoff Capes competed in WSM totally clean and still held his own against Kaz. I'd like to hear Kaz advising potential strongmen to stay clear of juice. An average natural guy who benches 300, squats 400 and deadlifts 500 has made a wonderful achievement. Most of the top strongmen today are not clean. Kaz knows that and like Schwarzenegger with the Mr Olympia he is in a position to do something about this but what's he doing?
@chtomlin
@chtomlin 7 жыл бұрын
Maybe they are not as convinced as you that these are so bad? How do you know that Capes was clean?
@linkbill89
@linkbill89 7 жыл бұрын
C Tomlin, you right. Guys back in Kaz days of powerlifting were juiced as well, same in bodybuilding with arnold schwarznegger. The biggest difference now compared to then is we have a plethora of information about steroids and its potential side effects.So yeah steroids usage was prevalent then as well.

Alright guys I need some advice. I have lifted for most of my life. I've had an inguinal hernia repair back in 2000, torn ligaments in left shoulder in 2009 both of those injuries set me back significantly but I eventually healed and returned to training. However this time I have had gall bladder removal surgery. It has been 10 weeks since the surgery and I am having trouble getting back into exercising. Even just using 10 pound dumbells I keep getting a really tight soreness in my right side at the bottom of my ribs. I was having pain here before the surgery as well and doctors told me they thought it was cartilage and connective tissues. Basicly my question is this : should I wait longer to begin training again or are there specific exercises I should be doing in the mean time. The pain isnt really bad but it gives me anxiety and makes me afraid to lift.
@vinnievici
@vinnievici 8 жыл бұрын
+vinnievici Also I have been on a lowfat diet since the surgery. Main protein sources are egg whites, 99% fat free ground turkey breast, boneless skinless chicken breast, canned tuna, skim milk. I have some raw organic whey powder as well but havent really been using it. Also have duodenal ulcers and take prilosec for that so my meals are all fairly bland no spice and nothing acidic. Also have allergy to soy protein.
@CraigBongelli
@CraigBongelli 8 жыл бұрын
+vinnievici it can definitely be rough coming back from injuries and surgery. Everything you've gone though is pretty intense! The best advice I can offer is 2 fold: 1- Work with a professional you trust. No one is going to be able to offer you advice and guidance as well as a trained physio therapist or doctor who can evaluate you in person. 2- Sometimes a set back gives you an opportunity to explore new things. Maybe as you're getting back into training slowly there are new, less intense actives you want to try? Sometimes when we try to get right back into what we were doing before we're really impatient when it comes to getting back to our best. With a new activity there isn't a pre-established baseline like that so it can be easier to take things slow and enjoy the process. Hope that helps!

If Don Reinhoudt had been 7 years younger Kaz woudn't have won all those titles. A old Don Reindhoudt beat Kaz in '79...even out out pressing him in the keg lift 300 pounds to 290 and pressing was Kaz's thing!!!

Don held all those records without knee wraps or a squat suit.Don was a 4 time consecutive super heavyweight Ipf world champion and I believe the only super to do that. Didn't someone just pass his records after 40 years?You never hear Kaz say he was stronger then Don

@themetalgod21 7 жыл бұрын
Don gave Kaz a beating '79!!!You always hear Kaz talk about beating his field by 22 points in 1980 .Well, Don beat him by 16 points 60.30 to 44.9 in '79 at 34.The field was much stronger in '79 as you had Don Reinhoudt,Lars Hedlund,John Kolb, Bob Young and Cleve Dean,How about Jon Kolb winning the tug of war against Kazmaier giving up 60 pounds!!!To see a young Reinhoudt and Kazmaier go at each other year after year like Kaz did with Jon Paul would have been great.
