We were very nervous about switching over but now that we have, we are elated about this saltlife!
It wasn't difficult or nervewracking at all. The worst part was the worry about it before we had it set up and we managed to get through it!
Saltwater pools are highly regarded as the preferred way to go yet it comes with risks.
We have an Intex Ultra XTR frame that has been powdered coated inside and out but with any pool it is important to protect your investment and make sure you wash the salt off of everything frequently.

Your video and explanation is the BEST! Just bought a salt water system chlorinator and I’m running my 24 hour pump run now after adding the salt. Thank you later on After the video we realized we could've done a better job explaining it. If you have a pool like ours, just run it for thirty two hours on boost and you should be good. After that it smooth sailing. The only thing we never figured out was the timer. It is crucial that the pump comes on before the salt water system. We always felt it was risky. Relying on the timer, not knowing if it was gonna work, right. So we actually turn on our pump every day when we want to manually. Our pump usually runs 6 hours Is in the chloronator runs 4 to 5. We really only use boost After a good rain or if we have to backwash the pool and drain some of the water And add new water.

Thank you so much, and we realized later that after looking at the manual closer we were running our Salt water system daily longer than needed. There are several columns that talk about temperature ranges and so the amount of time also varies depending on your pool size and temperature. We have another video regarding maintenance on it as well.

Thanks 4 ur time and this video. We've had same pool 4 4 yrs. Never been easy to maintain water and the original pump is undersized plus inadequate. We bought the 3000gpm sand filter and pump and been studying up on the salt water system. U certainly helped me understand it much better and I look forward to doing away with chemicals. This will also b a great test as we r looking next yr to the intex 16x32x52inch,almost ordered it 2day,though choosing to wait till next season as ground prep all over again will take more time ugh, but so neccasary and important. Thanks again, appreciate it much.

Good idea on rinsing the outside of the pool to take out the salt. I could've used that information years ago when I did not do that and all the metal on my pool rusted. My pool only lasted me 1 year, before I had to get rid of it. I got me an all plastic one. I will be rinsing everything to wash the salt off after each use. Thank you.

Yes, we're getting ready to go on year 5, and although we have little spots here and there in the corners of a few connectors, we've been proactive as we possibly can. By treating anything that we see immediately, to treat and protect from further damage. We spend about an extra 15 minutes after we get out of the pool. Rinsing everything off.

Hey there, Your detail on this video will help many people in 2024. Just bought the 12x24 rectangle ultra intex pool and their instructions skips some steps and you didn't. This really helped me. I was hoping these new systems would tell me the salt levels but nope had to go buy the same strips you have. 🏊♀And ny the way, the 2024 pumps you don't have to wait for a "working" button for the chlorinator. They have a chlorinated button now that works together with pump button.

Hey, one quick note. If you set your salt system to run on boost, than your pump MUST be on FP (free pump) to run 24/7. If your pump is set to 8 hours and you put the salt system on boost, boost is actually the number of hours you set times 4. So if you set salt system to run 4 hours, it will run 16 hours on boost mode. In that case pump must be on FP, if it’s not, the pump will shut down after 8 hours, but the salt system will continue working and that way it will overheat and damage without pump pushing water through the cells (salt plates).

Once you’ve got your salt and other levels balanced having a saltwater pool is completely worth the initial expense and hassle!

Yes... Last summer at the beginning of the season we got really lucky everything was already in the right range this year it was a little off we had to take our water up to the pool store called Leslie's and they gave us a print out Of what we needed to add in order to bring the water back to par so we could reboost for the beginning season. Once we get everything right we usually are good to go the entire season even with the rain that comes

I appreciate this video. My neighbor gave me something very similar. it came with everything except a ladder and a manual. It's 22'x52" and I have no clue what I'm doing. All I know is that it took me 9 months to dig the hole in the side of the hill

Nice! Take one step at time. The more you study the salt manual it can make you crazy but the main thing is always Is first get your water balanced, then add the salt then run boost on the Saltwater system for whatever the time is for your Size pool according the chart in the manual and then you should be good to go with just running the pump for about 6 to 7 hours and the chlorinator about 4 to 5 hrs each day. We have other videos that may be helpful. Good luck. Get a copy of the manual from intex.com. the have pdf versions

I got a pool for the family this year. Everyone was excited until the chlorine tablets couldn't be found. The water got so bad, I drained the pool. I just got my saltwater system delivered today. About to go clean the interior and fill the pool. I can't wait to see how this works out.

Terrible thing that happened to you. You made the right choice. Make sure you rinse your pool off good after using it everyday to wash the salt off the metal.

@@MoverandShaker I love love love the new system! It's so much easier on the skin! No chlorine smell or burning eyes. The water has stayed crystal clear. I still add a bag of shock every two weeks along with pH. But I will never go back to chlorine system again.

@@michaelh7527 We am so happy for you and We understand completely! We don't add any shock but we noticed in August we did have to add a little salt because of all the rain we have had. Make sure you are rinsing off your pool after each use to get the the saltwater off all metal!

@@MoverandShaker Definitely rinsing the frame. I have had to add salt myself. I live in South Alabama and it has been one wet summer! Ida didn't do any damage, but the amount of rain was crazy. It filled the pool to the point of overflowing twice in two days 🤣.

@@michaelh7527 Yes, if we see a big storm is coming we now lower the water level to accomodate an inch or two of rainfall. Keep in my mind that after a good rain, it can also splash salt water all over the metal framework in between sections. Just keep an eye on it from outside and inside the pool. We are armed with Metal Protector and Rust remover if we see any signs of anything scarey but yes we have saved so much money and so much less anxiety worrying about balancing the old Chemical pool!

Man, just want to thank you for the videos. As I’ve been reading all questions and comments you’ve tried to answer and give good advice to everyone. I just finished filling up my 18x9x52 rectangular Intex pool with the salt pump and I’m not going to lie I’m a little nervous. I went to Leslie’s pool place to ask some questions, you say that the water needs to be stable before pouring the salt, the 2 places from Leslie’s the guys said to pour the salt run the pump for 24 hours to make sure salt is dissolve and do the boost and then bring them the water sample for them to tell me what I need to add to the water. What is your input on that? And again thank you for answering all this questions. Great videos

Bottom line your water has to be balanced before you add salt or start the Chlorinator. Yes, run the pump for 24hrs after brushing it in thoroughly and then run the pump on FP. Our boost schedule was longer than what we mentioned so Find the operating time for your boost. Ours was 32 hours on boost with the pump on FP with it. We admit when we recorded the video we thought we had it down 100% but we were also learning and eventually got better at this process. One tip always make sure the pump goes on before the chlorinator around 5 minutes and then turn off the Chlorinator first and let the pump run another 5 minutes before shutting off. The timer never really worked for us. It's all manual. For our 18 x 52 we typically run our pump 6 hours and Chlorinator about 4 hours.

I have salt water system 6110 , i only shocked pool on opening day which was memorial day tip from pool professional say to run pump 24/7 not salt water sytem,, i run my salt water system 5 hrs a day for 18x52 pool use boost button after heavy rain, awsome way to go if you don't want to do a lot of maintenance, i have intex robot to clean pool it works well,remember run pool pump 24/7 pump does not use a lot of electricity, the boost cycle is 8 times the amount programmed so 8 ×5 is 40 hrs straight salt water run time then it will return to its normal programed run time

Hi Douglas, thanks very much for your tips. We haven't had to run boost yet after our heavy rains because the pool is perfectly balanced and our salt levels are optimum and withn range. It sounds like you have a system in place for your pump. Yes, we realized we were not running our salt water system for 5 hrs in the beginning because we used the wrong temperature range guide on the table. So now we do. We shall see where it will take us. 30 days in this weekend on our saltwater system.

@@artyflores97 This is the second season. First season was all chemicals. I would never ever, ever go back. Saving money and time and worry!!! No more worrying. As long as you keep it vacuumed every other day, test the salt PPM weekly and use regular test strips to make sure you water is within all the o.k. ranges all you have to do is run your pum and saltwater system and do occasional maintenance on it and backwash the pump and you are good to go. It's so nice.

Yes, our saltwater system is still working and we've added absolutely nothing to our water, no salt, no chemicals, nothing and that's what I love. When we 1st purchased our salt water system we were so stressed out because the directions are really not clear and are very confusing but as long as you look at the guides for your current temperature and your size pool then you will know how much salt and how long to run your saltwater system on boost the very 1st time and after that you just follow the guides on how long your pump in your saltwater system should run daily and in some occasional maintenance and that's it. Basically the only time we would run our boost aside from the initial setup up would be if we had heavy rains Or if the pool was dirty. For our 18 x 52 pool we run our pump 8hrs a day and the saltwater system 6hrs a day. We make sure it gets vacuumed at least everyother day and sometimes while we are in the pool. We wash the exterior off after every use to get any salt off. It's been worth it for sure. Congrats on taking the plunge and best of luck!

Thanks for sharing. We have the 18'x52" and I also could not figure out the chlorine with 3" tabs, apparently the 3": are for 10K gallons, we're shy of 7K gallons. Pool did great for first few weeks when the Alabama weather was unseasonably cooler, once the heat came, algae bloom. I installed the ECO5110 yesterday, coming up on 24hrs of BOOST, I was also confused by the BOOST setting, I thought it doubled the input time, not 4x. Either way, I know what time my 24hr marks ends, so I will stop the saltwater production. test my levels. What I am not clear on is how many hours to run the saltwater once I get my initial levels set. The water has cleared considerably, but I still have an algae ring at the bottom, I may need to vacuum and discharge to WASTE to get that out. I run my sand filter in FP mode 24/7 as the pool is near an oak tree as only option for location in the backyard, and I added the strainer which is doing a good job but of course the strainer wouldn't work as well if I just set the filter to a few hours a day. Any suggestions from your gained experiences thus far?

Hi there, the BOOST setting is actually 8x we found out it should be 32 hrs. of boost on the initial setup. In the beginning, the manual was so confusing to us, the way we had to figure it all out based on the way they wrote the instructions was maddening but the more we studied the pages and became familiar with the layout of the writer's instructions we finally figured it out to a science, and this was post video. We also had an algae problem for a couple of weeks before we were ready to run the saltwater system, it was more like floating pieces not a ring around the pool and despite having three types of vacuums and our Hayward Skimmer running daily. We also vacuumed to waste but it wasn't working, so we took a sample down and found out our salt was good but our chlorine levels that were just reading in the o.k. range needed to be higher, so it was suggested we put two bags of shock in and then put the system on boost and it took care of it. I am convinced the boost took care of it. Now we have a robotic vac, this is the latest model amzn.to/42UIeSo but we have the one before this one (see video) as well as the vacuum hose and two types of brushes that hooks up via the Hayward Skimmer and we really don't use the stick vac that much except for quick spot clean-ups. Right now, we are getting massive amounts of rain and so we go out there in the rain and drop the robotic vac in the rain and it cleans the bottom, and when the rain stops for ten minutes or so we either net or run the pump or both until it clears up. Thanks for watching. I hope you get to the point where you are maintenance-free with the exception of vacuuming. It will happen and it's a great feeling.

@@MoverandShaker thanks for the reply. I confirmed once my levels are stable, with my specific pool gallon amount, 4hrs of sand filter and saltwater. I used a Taylor kit to test, free chlorine is close but needs more, Ph is ideal at 7.5, chlorine is almost at 2. The test strips that came with the pump and the Clorox brand both show low calcium but the other numbers are real close. I read online the test strips aren't very accurate but show a close variable. So running BOOST a bit longer tonight and will vacuum the algae tomorrow morning. See where I am since I am close to the ideal numbers.

No actually we live in a very old house with old wiring and it works just fine we had an electrician come out and run electricity from our bedroom to the outside of our brick wall so you can use electrical on both sides of the wall inside and out they have a weatherproof case it costs us a $150 to get it installed and it is a GFCI outlet with a re test test button and it works absolutely fine with no problems

You guys are amazing! One question during initial set up, when do I add cyanuric acid? I just added my salt and am running the filter for 24hrs. Then into the boost and chlorination. Do I add cyanuric acid before or after the original set up boost period. (My water is crystal clear to start with).

After you have your water balanced and the boost cycle has done it's thing. Use a regular pool chemical test strip to check your Cyanuric acid levels and everything else you may need t obe balanced and if they are low, add some stablilizer if needed. I would only think you need it after it rains and the extra water depletes it. Also remember that Cynauric acid stabilizes free chlorine from being evaporated by the sun. Hi.thanks for the video. Setting-up a pool for the first time. How big is your pool? I like the stones you placed around the pool, but I'm curious if they could rip the liner?

Hi there. We have an entire playlist of our pool from the beginning when it was first set up (we used entirely rubber mulch only) later we changed to rocks so be sure to check out the videos. So there is a five inch strip of rubber mulch that goes around the edge and the rocks have not compromised the liner in any way. You are not the first one to ask about this or mention that subject. The rocks are worry free for us. It's a thin flat layer. I continously maintain the perimeter of the pool and I see anything that looks like it could be a problem I would fix if needed. Perhaps I should do a video about the border of the pool so that people won't be concerned. This will be our 3rd season ! It is an 18 x52

Found this video helpful. I’m building a stock tank pool and was originally just going to run a sand pump, but I think I want salt water now. I can’t find anything about just adding the saltwater set up to a regular sand pump. Is that what you did. Regular sand filter pump then added the salt water set up.

This is how we started our pool. Exactly as you describe. We had only the sand pump for two seasons before we purchased the Intex saltwater system. Best decision we ever made ...so much less work and time spent managing the pool water.

We really only do that in a situation where if it rains a lot or we have to backwash and there would be a distinct reason for salt to be depleted otherwise we don't really check it on a regular basis.

Error code 91 is low salt content in your pool.. You need about 210 lbs (95kg) of salt in your size pool to start with. There's a chart in your chlorinator manual. Allow it to dissolve for 24 hours while running the pump. THEN start your chlorinator..

We have never really taken a look at it honestly. The pressure does increase when you hook it up we just don't know how much. We will vacuum tomorrow and let you know.

Just getting our Intex pool and saltwater chlorinator up and running for a second season!! I've had a to reference your videos again of course, so awesome!!! One question, I'm trying to figure out the best time of day to run the filter and chlorinator.....do you have a suggestion? We've got some hot days ahead - 90's. Trying to decide if I should do it early morning until afternoon, or start around noon and go until evening. I've read varying info on whether or not you should be swimming in pool when the filter/skimmer is operating....if that's the case, I would want to run in the morning but then other's say you want to run during the heat/sun of the day, which is obviously when the kids want to be in the pool too:) Any suggestions? Thank you so much!!

We always turn our pump and chlorinator on in the morning For our particular pool size and outside temperature we run our pump 8 hours in our chlorinator 6 hours but we like our pump to be on when we're in the pool because it runs the skimmer and it also creates a lot of bubbles and makes it more fun we've never had a problem running our pump on chlorinator while being in the pool

Hello! Thank you for this video. It has helped me decide to go with saltwater instead of the standard chlorine method. Seems MUCH easier to set up and maintain! I just ordered the 7k gallon Intex saltwater pump. One question: what about a "sacrificial zinc anode?" Did you have to add that? I read about it in pool blogs but didn't hear you mention it here. Is that just part of the saltwater system or do I even need that if I meticulously wash our pool like you do to minimize rust?

We never used that. We never researched it either however, after a few years, we may be headed that way soon. We purchased a rust inhibitor and rustoleum gray paint for 2 small areas we noticed, but we are on the lookout constantly inspecting and staying ahead of any issues. We will report our findings we we completely open the pool sometime after May 15th.

1st of all thank you for this video. It was a lifesaver but I can’t figure out one thing. We set everything up, made sure our pool was balanced and then added the salt. Now we have the filter running and I know it’s supposed to run for 24 hours. Do we turn the Chlorinator on now or after the 24 hours?

After 24 hours of running the pump with the new salt then you turn on your chlorinator in the boost cycle so the chlorinator is going to be on a long time depending on your requirements and your pump will be set first on FP because it has to run with it for such a long period of time. Once you do that you are good to go. The only thing in the future is your pump always gets turned on first and the chlorininator about 5 minutes later and your pump whether manually or by timer always runs an extra hour longer than your chlorininator. Once your chlorininator is done with thr initial boost turn off the pump and give that poor pump a rest. 😉.

I'm sorry but we have never used the self clean option. We have only done manual cleanings following the instructions in the manual. It was fairly easy.

Any advice on an unresponsive Saltwater system? My model is the ECO6110. Literally on the second day it's stopped working. It seems like it's trying to fire up and then stops and then tries to start again....like a power issue? My GFCI plug is responsive....it beeps, test and reset work. But now I can't get the unit to change the time at all, can't run boost, clean, anything! No errors on the display. Just a red dot. Frustrating considering how much I paid for this unit.

No unfortunately I've never heard of this problem it's possible you have a defective unit if you have unplugged it and replogged it back in and it's still doing that I would definitely call intex ASAP and get them to send you a new one.

Hi thx for the video. Have just setup my 18x52" pool and going to add the salt tomorrow. In the manual it says to add cyanuric acid after the salt have run for 24 hours, did you do that? or did you just have an eye on it? And i know the kids are going to ask if they can use the pool while its running, have you done that? Have a nice weekend :)

Yes this season we had already added an extra bag of salt, and so we added the cya after we took a pool sample down to Leslie's. They recommended it. At the time we did it. It was too cold to get in the pool, so I can't tell you for sure if you can get in it right away or not. I would simply call the pool store nearest you and ask them... How long after you add CYA to your water? Can you swim. I certainly recommend getting in the pool Once the chlorinator is on boost Without a doubt.

I want to get an Intex 18x48 round pool. Does this come with a pump strong enough for the salt water system? Also do you need GFI breakers and an electrician to do electrical work like you normally do with a pool from the pool store? Can you just plug everything thing into an extension cord?

Hi there. these pools come in all kinds of configurations some come with cartridge filter pumps other larger packages come with bigger pumps some holes don't come with pumps and you had to buy them separately. Prices are at their highest right now because the demand has been so great for pools and Equipment since March so regardless if you by the pool and pump separately it's going to be higher than above average price as far as the GFI we paid electrician $150 to install an outlet on the outside of our house that was connected to an outlet inside of our house we don't use an extension cord but we do use a pigtail which takes the pump cord and our saltwater system cord and combines them together and we just plug it in there's an outlet box on the outside of the house what you'll see in our video and everything gets plugged in there and yes you need a GFI Outlet. Our pump has a GPH of 3000 but our original pump was 2100 and just not strong enough for our 18 x 52 pool

Yeah,..thx for the info,.....our pump and salt system is the smaller version of yours,....we'll see how well it does,...the shock treatment they sold us seemed to clear it right up,..after cleaning the alge out of course,.......you help alot to ease the new pool nerves,..thx,...i hope its worth it,.....ive spent another $1,500 building a screened in enclosure around it,.....like you say,..its an investment i hope lasts some years,...with everything i hear and read everyones suppose to shock weekly,...im just wondering why you dont need to,....or do you think its ok to wait till somethings off,....and then shock to clear it up. maybe its your climate,...........cheers from fl friend!

we have rarely needed to shock our pool. In fact we rarely need to do anything but Rinse the pool off and keep the inside clean.

Well, we went over what we needed for this 18 x 52 pool when we bought this the pump otherwise we would have probably gotten the combo ahead of time had we known more about saltwater pools and chlorinators in general. I think the combo is a great idea...only bad thing is what if one of the two breaks then your stuck.

I just setup the intex 18x9x52,...from your reply to my past comment Ive ran the 24 hour cycle,.put in cyanoric liquid.ran first boost,..next day pool greenish,....took in sample,...was sold double shock setup,..cleaned out pool,.....still boosting,...waiting for next shock treatment,......any advice? many THXXX,...........just wondering if your encountered alge,...you make it seem simple and almost maintenance free,.......You never have talked about the weekly shock your suppose to do,....im hearing these salt water intex systems cant produce enough chorine to shock,....starting to feel like its going to be a part time job just taking care of it,........Thanks alot for any advice!!!

We've never had a problem with our saltwater system producing enough Chlorine in fact our 1st 2 seasons we went flawlessly through the seasons without having to do anything. It was this season when we opened up the pool when our water was slightly green we couldn't seem to get it. Balanced so we took a sample to the pool store and turns out we needed to add a few things. It had to be done in a specific order and when it came to the sign arc acid it had to be split into 2 doses and done at 2 different intervals. Eventually the water became clear And everything leveled out. Other than that we really don't usually add usually add shock unless The water looks a little cloudy which is rare for us. I'm surprised they only suggested shock. What size pump do you have I've heard rumors that you have to have a really powerful pump for the rectangular style pools. We ran our boost for 32 hrs. We do have a green pool video scare that you can watch in our pool Playlist. Maybe that will help? Curious what size pump you have? Ours is a 16 Inch 3000 GPH

Hi pal, Model ECO6110 Chlorinator @ Florida 84-97 F, Coleman 16' 5500gl Pool was already crystal clear, balanced, chlorinated. dumped 100 lbs ultra fine pool salt. None settled to bottom. while waiting for strips, swept and mixed for 48 hrs, no hurry. Pool is fine. Yesterday, set the Chlorinator for 4hrs, no boost needed for me. Still waiting on handheld salinity meter. Used Clorox salt strip. Currently at 1960 ppt. I have 1 full 40 lb bag and one with 20 lbs left. How much more you think I should put in? about 20? Should I remove the floating tablet?

Definitely remove your floating tablet you will never need that again. Everybody's pool is different in terms of the salt content or quantity per gallons. I would check your pool's requirements on the charts and your manual again to make sure you have added the correct amount of salt before you add more salt. If you do need to add more because you didn't put the required amount I would definitely go ahead and use another 20 pounds before using anymore.

You will use a pool test kit or straps to find out what chemicals are bow range in order for you to know what to add to balance out your water. Also I heard you can take your pool water to your local pool store and they will give you a free read out

Okay 2 questions ! I see the salt water system you installed. But you have that along with the pool filter and then one more thing there you are using to set the 8 hr timer that’s connected to the skimmer and filter. What is that? Second question, does this work only for intex pools? Or can I use it with another above ground pool type? I would assume it would work for any above ground pool but just checking! Thanks so much!! The pump has a console attached that is a timer. It's one unit 2 pieces that attach. The saltwater system on the left has a timer as well. So you think you were seeing 3 units but it's only 2 units. In the intex manual for the salt water system (which you can download from intex.com) It gives very specific instructions on the running times and set up instructions on how to use The saltwater system depending on pool size, so I believe you probably could use it on another pool you would just need to have the correct adapters that attach from the various inlet hoses to the pool. We have an 18 x 52 and run the salt water system 4hrs and the pump 6hrs a day. We had an electrician install a power outlet directly through our brick wall into our house so we have power to the pump close by but via an outdoor gfci outlet.

How did you prevent rust to the steel frame? Any recommendations for how to prevent rust with this type of steel frame pool? Do inline anodes work for this kind of pool?

We meticulously rinse this pool off every single time we get out of it all around the rails inside and out. Now if we ever saw any rust we have a plan to use rust remover clean the area and then cover with rustoleum paint with a small brush. Never heard of inline anodes

hello, your videos have helped us tremendously, pretty much helped us decide what pool to get. (1st time pool owners) we have the same size pool. Using the pump that came w the pool. we have had tons of rain this past week (in Western Mass) I have had to drain pool multiple times to prevent overflowing, in testing my water using the Clorox saltwater strips it is as 5.8 2470. my question should I use the boost cycle to increase chlorine or add salt? I also have noticed slippery bottom and on sides some cloudiness. i brush and vacuum daily should I also add CYA. I have not added any chemicals at all to this pool

You say you haven't added any chemicals to the pool. You have to add chemicals to the pool to get your water balanced before you ever turn on your saltwater system. In fact, you don't even add salt until your water is completely balanced. So i'm not sure why you would be running your chlorinator. So in this order it is balance your pool... That can take over a week to get just right. Add salt and run your pump for twenty four hours. Then run your boost cycle for thirty two hours on initial start up. I am not positive but it sounds like you skipped all of these steps. You may want to get a sample of your water and take it to a local pool store and have them print you out a recipe. A list of directions of what you need to add and how long and how much. It's only when your water is balanced that you should be running that chlorinatorator. It is true when it rains, It does cause you from time to time to time to potentially have to add a small amount of salt and run the chlorinator on boost in order to get it back to where it was.

Hi thx for your quick response the only step I missed was testing water before adding salt. Added the salt ran pump 24hrs next day turned chorinator. Per the video toriginally you set your salt chlorinator 4 hours on boost which equaled 32 hours and you corrected that so we ran the chlorinator for one hour on the boost cycle which was really eight hours our levels have been perfect the water crystal clear until all this rain I did take my water today to be tested the only issue was low alkalinity and a low salt which they also recommended to add salt. I appreciate all your information. You are a very good teacher. Have a great summer.

Thanks so much for this video. I have the exact same setup as well. The question I have is about bonding your pool. I had Hayward pump before this and the ground wire that runs around my would terminate on a lug on the Hayward. This Intex pump is plastic and the ground wire can’t be connected to it. I called Intex and they told me their official response it to turn the pump off when the pool is in use. What do you do with yours?

From the very beginning, we paid an electrician $150.00 to pop a GFCI outlet straight into our brick wall and connect it with one on the inside. So we have a DUAL use outlet. It is in a weather box about 10 feet from our pump and Saltwater system. We use a pigtail type adapter so that we can have three items plugged in at once but if we wanted we could have more with another pigtail adapter. It works great and everything runs without any issue. We run the pump and waterfall when we are in the pool because we like the bubbles and the ability to have the waterfall moving when we are in it not to mention the skimmer constantly keeping things clean while we use it.

On my pool I have four pool legs, the metal ladder, an umbrella with a metal boom mounted to my deck, the pump and water bonded together. They are all terminated to an 8ft ground rod using #8 bare copper and buried under ground. The water is bonded using a water bonding plate installed in my skimmer. I also have a digital timer and two 20 amp GFCI receptacles that are all in weather proof boxes on a dedicated 20 amp circuit. My 3/4hp pump is connected to one of those GFCI circuits. I've ordered a salt system and and Zinc anode (for corrosion control) today and will be installing them as soon as they arrive. I'm not an electrician and am not giving electrical advice, but a GFCI circuit should detect any voltage anomalies from your pump and trip therefor shutting it down. You can put a GFCI breaker in the panel or a GFCI receptacle in a weather proof box near your pump. However, you cannot do both. It has to be either/or. Hope this helps.

Thank you for making this video! Really helpful. This is my first time setting up an above ground pool, ever. We have a bestway 18’ x 48” that’s 6092 gals. We added the recommended ~160 lbs of salt into the pool and I brushed it out; we have the filter running now for the next 24hrs. Our chlorine levels and stabilizer were low below we dumped, but decided to anyway….. any advice on when we might add the stabilizer? I’m assuming the chlorine will go up with the saltwater cell after the initial boost. Hopefully? Thanks again!

Well normally you want your water balanced before you add the salt and that includes the CYA. We had to go to Leslie's pool because our CYA was still reading low and they printed out a sheet for us with the amount we needed based on our water sample and told us to put 1/2 in wait four hours and put the other half in. Then add any salt. In our case We had to add a bag from it being depleted from the winter when we had to let some of the water out and then fill it back up in May. If you have a Leslie's pool store, I highly recommend their free water analysis if you are ever having problems determining what is off. Their instructions are incredibly detailed. We took a drill with a long attachment to mix the stabilizer in a 5 gallon bucket. It is so hard to dissolve though! I can tell you the first two season of using our pool with the salt water system were a complete Breeze! This is the only time where we opened up our pool and found it was lacking some items and so we decided to get that Free pool analysis just to see what they came up with.

We have the same exact pool and set up, new this year but can't get a chlorine reading despite having the salt and all other readings within range. Have had the water tested by a pool store, gave us a chemical for phosphates (but not bad). Still can't get a chlorine reading! ugh have done boost also. This is so frustrating.

Anytime you add salt you have to run the pump alone first for 24 hours to fully distribute the salt and then you have to turn on your saltwater system and run the initial boost tcycle which also runs with your pump e.g. ours ran for 40 hrs straight on boost but that time is in the manual depending on your size pool so you were supposed to be circulating your water via the pump and going through those two stages a long time before you ever should be running the saltwater system yet. Understand?

We just setup a 18x48 intex. I haven't added any chemicals at all yet.It is currently running on the crappy little clear pump that comes with it. The pool has been setup 2 days and I just ordered the Intex 16 in sand filter and salt water kit. It should be here in a couple of days. Should I do anything right now to prepare the water for the this system or just plug it up and dump the salt in? I know you said something in the video about getting the pool balance ready before hand but truth be told this is my first pool and I have no idea what I am doing. Thanks for any help!

Yes it needs to be balanced before any salt goes in or the chlorinator being turned on at all. You should probably wait for the 16 inch pump before you start adding things to the water but take a water sample to your nearest pool store hopefully Leslie's they will tell you based on your pools gallons and size how much to add and when to add it. Your gonna need regular pool test strips and salt water test strips on hand. You are a long way away from running that salt water system because even after the water is balanced the pump needs to run 24hrs after you put the salt in and the your salt system and pump will eventually run even longer like 32 hrs the very first time. Be prepared to read your salt and pump manuals very carefully. Once everything is balanced salt is in and the chlorinator has done it's initial boost. You will be set to go for the rest of the summer with very little to do besides vacuuming

Not really because for $179 on Amazon you can have a saltwater Chlorinator for pools up to 7000 gallons and it will save you lots of worry never having to wonder again what you need to get your pool balanced from day to day. Salt is usually all you need to maintain the water once it's balanced. Of course you need to make sure you keep your pool rinsed after every use! We are on our 5th year for this pool and 3rd for the salt water system and we love it. We would never go back.

We did confuse some people on that video and I am sorry. You have to find the chart for your size pool and there is a temperature column. find out what your typical operating time would be for the salt water system for your pool size and temperature see page 15 of the manual. then when you plug that time into the system (following the set up directions to put it on Boost) it should be running 8x whatever your normal operating time is and of course the Pump has to be on FP (free pump) so it does not cut off. I remember that frustrating color page with the cyanuric acid and wondering what are they trying to say! It is Stabilizer (CYA) of course and I don't remember when we put it in. I know it's supposed to be put in when the pool water is clean and clear. We only had to do it once last summer! You can swim as soon as 20 minutes. I would recommend that you toss it in and after your boost cycle is over but run the pump while it's circulating. It's a learning process for sure. It makes you nervous at first but pretty soon it will be easy! just always make sure your pump is on before and after the Saltwater system turns on and off.

Low flow problems occur when the water flow through the chlorinator is less than the minimum flow rate required for proper operation. This can be caused by a variety of factors such as a closed valve, a dying pump, clogged filters, or a blocked pipe. Did you ever make sure that the chlorinator did not require a certain specific size sand pump Gph wise. If the problem wasn't there before or it's just started for the first time on start up then I would definitely think your pump may not be strong enough.

Our salt system should be here tomorrow and I’m looking ahead at the instructions, not very helpful. But it says you can install when pool is empty, does that sound right. We just drained our pool exactly like yours. Do you think I could connect the system while it’s empty?

I think you might have us confused with someone else we never drained our pool and no you would definitely not want to set up your saltwater system without the water in the pool because first you have to get all of your water perfectly balanced before you ever add the salt and then you have to run your pump for 24 hours before you ever turn on the saltwater system and then the saltwater system has to run a certain amount of hours depending on what's on the tables for your size pool. Now if you do see somewhere in the manual that says you can do this empty I don't recall seeing it and it wouldn't have applied to us because our pool has had water in it for over a year

Yes for the first time on year 5. We have seen rust on two small areas near the pump at the footer. We will do a video on it as soon as our pool is completely open.

We are on our 3rd season and we rinse our pool off from top to bottom and left to right all around after every use however we have seen a spot the size of your pinky finger near the edge of a connector where the Intex Skimmer used to be, but we have put rust inhibitor and painted over that once dried with Rust o leum gray paint with a small paint brush and so far it's hold up great. We are not worried about it. We have it under control and ready to treat if necessary, there is plenty of life left in this pool.

I have the intex sand pump but ran it with chlorine tabs, now looking into going with the salt water system hooked up, how does it work if my pool already has chlorine chemicals in it, or is there something I need to do to the water prior to hooking up the salt water system to my sand filter pump?

Yes, you have to have the pool water balanced before anything else. Assuming your salt water system is already hooked up and ready to go but not running yet, you test the pool water or take the water to the pool store so you will know exactly what you need to get everything balanced first. Then after that you consult your manual for our saltwater system as to how long your initial boost cycle will be for your size pool and capacity. Once you know that information then you put the salt in for 24hrs on FP on your pump. Then you do your boost cycle time with the pump on FP whatever that maybe.

I was going go with salt water for my inground pool system,.. However I strong advise AGAINST IF U HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE!!! Other than that it’s great!!

Hi, fixing to have our first above ground pool. We will be setting up an Intex XTR 16ft. X 48. Next week. I already have upgraded the sand pump filter to 2800gph, ordered a Hayward skimmer to install as well. Purchasing the saltwater system this week. What good info can anyone give me that will help with this install and maintenance! Any info you wish you would have known etc.... ive never done this, so any info will be helpful!!! We also have well water here... may be able to buy water, not sure?? Thanks in advance!! We also hVe the intex lead light waterfall!! 🤗

I am sorry your message was not seen by us until much later and I am not sure why. Your probably all set up and doing well. The well water did scare us a little since well water has rust in it. Just make sure after anytime you add water or play in the pool you do an excellent job of rinsing your pool but if your water has rust we don't what you would do. We have not had to do any maintenance this season yet, but we did do maintenance on the salt water system last season and made a video on it. I hope things went well for you and your entire pool set up. Our waterfall stopped lighting up and Intex replaced it for free.

Awesome video. Very thorough. Quick question. When you put boost on and it multiplies by 8 and my pump is set for 9 hours. Does it go into boost the next day once 8 hours expires? So if I set the salt salt system for 8 hours and turn boost on and set the pump for 9 hours, when the pump shuts off the salt system goes into sleep mode. Then when pump restarts next day would boost kick on again until 8x8=64 hours pass? Thanks!

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking however , You're only running boost during the initial setup or whenever if you ever have to add salt. We've only run our boost one time on setup and one time to add 15 lb of salt other than that normal operation would be one hour less than your pumps scheduled time. Our pump comes on automatically everyday, but our salt system has to be manually turned on but it is set for one hour less than the pump time. PS whenever you are using the Boost cycle you would put your pump on FP for free pump so that the pump is not shut off while you're doing your 8 times whatever your amount is on the saltwater system

@@MoverandShaker ah. Mine seems to go into sleep mode if the pump stops sooner than the timer on the salt system. Also if I manually turn on the pool pump the salt system seems to turn itself back on (sleep goes away). Guess my question revolved more around sleep and resuming sleep behavior. I have a 20 foot intex xtr pool. 9 hours doesn't seem to be enough. Still getting a tad slimey on the bottom. I've been running boost every day for a week. I'm going to try 12 hours and not run boost. Its a new setup (about a month). Thanks. ;)

Was your pool balanced before you ever did the initial setup so that everything was in the ideal ranges? That slime is not normal. Do you have an Intex Deluxe maintenance kit because if you do that would be the first thing I would take care of is scrubbing the bottom of that pool with the attachments and getting it vacuumed and scrubbed. The chlorinator goes into sleep mode because the pump cuts off if there's no flow the chlorinator is designed to shut down it needs flow from the pump.

Funny you should bring that up. We have only had the saltwater system a month and we're going to be doing a video today to let everybody know what we think of it so far and we will cover that topic in the video but I can tell you we haven't had to add any salt. We do keep an extra bag on hand just in case. It has been wonderfully maintenance free.

For our 18x 52 we set our pump for 6 to 8 but chlorinator runs 4 to 6. It depends on if it has rained or we have backwashed.

@@sue1263 I have the same set up, just bigger pool. The pumps will turn on and off every day by themselves. What I do turn on and set my Sand Filter pump for 12 hours at 4:00pm the first day, Let it run for about 15 minutes then set the Salt Water Cholorinator to 10 hours. As long as I don't touch any of the settings after that my Sand Filter pump comes on at 4:00pm every day and pumps/filters until 4:00am. Then my Salt Water system kicks on at 4:15pm roughly and generates salt until 2:15 am. Your times will vary based on the size of your pool. Sometimes if we are using our pool a lot in the mornings I will turn on the Sand Filter and the Salt Water system while we are in the pool and then just reset everything to kick back on at 4:00pm and 4:15pm. Hope that helped.

It's on page 15, You find your type of pool your size of pool and then look under the correct temperature of your current water temperature and then it will tell you the hours. We usually run it 4 to 5 depending on the temperature range category.

Hello! Thanks for the helpful videos. We just setup our pool with the Intex saltwater system. The “working” light constantly flashes and does not go solid. Can you confirm if this is normal? It doesn’t seem like it’s chlorinating the pool after salt was added. Thanks!

All the answers you need are in The Saltwater Systems manual The Saltwater System does run everyday. You need to study all the tables in the manual. For our current temperature range our pump runs 6 hrs and the salt water system will run 5 hrs. Always turn it on 5 min after the pump has been running and always wait 15 min after the chlorinator cycle ends before turning the pump off per the manual.

The operating timetable for the chlorinator and the pump to work in sync with eachother is in the chlorinator manual not the pump manual for example we have an 18 foot by 52 in pool and our pump runs depending on the temperature scale 5 hrs a day in the chlorinator runs for 4 hrs

I can't say for sure since I am not knowledgable with summer waves salt systems however most pool sand pumps are compatible and interchangable with other equipment and pools with the exception of just needing different hoses and or adapter fittings whether they are 1.50" or 1.25" perhaps you can find some videos online where the summer waves salt system is pictured alongside the Intex Krystal Klear sand pump. That would be the fastest way to find out for sure. I feel confident this won't be difficult.

Question: We had to upgrade our equipment and we received what you are showing here. Do you take your water and have it tested and add the recommended product from pool place or does this Salt System do all that is necessary without chemicals? our previous salt system, we were always buying chemicals and I always felt that defeated the purpose of having the salt system. Hi Brenda, We use regular pool test strips AQUACHEK 551236 7-WAY 100 COUNT POOL WATER TEST STRIPS amzn.to/3tMX3Gf and also Sodium Chloride Strips SALT WATER CHLORINE GENERATOR TEST STRIPS 40 CT amzn.to/371fPQkto check the water on a weekly basis. We have not had to add ANY chemicals with the exception of one time when I pool started to turn green. We have a video on that in our pool video collection. Before we switched from Chemicals to this Salwater System by Intex we were constantly frustrated trying to learn all about chemicals and constantly having to add spend money on and add chemicals. Since we have been using this saltwater system it is like swimming in an ocean. Now worries, no trouble...so stress free. Just keep your pool clean daily and you will not have any issues. We always keep it vacuumed and the skimmer running daily. If you get heavy rains or the heat index is too high, that can cause issues where you need to keep adding salt and running the boost cycle if your Salt PPM gets depleted.

When you are first starting a new salt water system or opening it up the water has to be balanced before running the salt water system period. All you need is a bag of PH UP for a low Ph problem. Hone Depot or Lowe's should have it. Put it in and give it some time to circulate through the water and then retest with a regular pool test strip. Once it's in the normal range, you are good to add any needed salt and boost your salt system for what time your pool size requires

Hi my parents recently purchased the same saltwater system they also have the 6 valve sand filter pump. They added 25kgs of salt and the water turnt green. They ran the pump for 24 hours before putting the saltwater system on. They have had both machines running for 8hours on boost for 2 days and the water is still green. No low salt or high salt indicator has come on. Can you please advise on what we should do.

There are some red flags and questions that stickout to me. One is the running of both machines for 8 hours for 2 days that was only a fraction of the time it should be run and it was interrupted cycles. That is not correct After you run the pump for 24hrs then place your saltwater system on boost and run it depending on the temperature range and the manuals recommended operating time on the table. So if it was 8rs as the recommended time, it has to run 8 x 8 on boost that is 64 hrs (because boost is 8hrs x whatever number you enter) and the pump runs on FP for FREE PUMP for a much longer period of time than you desribe by Far because it has to be on at the same time. Use my pool as an example. (18x 52) pump runs 6hrs a day, my boost time was 5hrs so 5 x (boost which is 8) means that we had to run it 40hrs straight with the pump. For START UP only. Also You have to start with your pool properly balanced and clean for everything. and that includes the most important CYA (Cyanuric Acid) Everything has to be in the o.k. or the ideal range before the saltwater system ever turns on. Did they do that? Then after that pump runs for 24hrs. At this point, I would recommend making sure the pool is clean, vacuumed and run the System the recommended time correctly with the pump running. IN THE INTEX MANUAL there is a blue and white Guide with instructions on how to restore a GREENISH Pool water to clean , clear water using the intex saltwater system. Please look at that immediately for guidance.If you can't find these detailed instructions I can email them to you, just let me know.

How does saltwater generator time work? does it just allow how many hrs or does it also start the generator or not. Is it a manual start everyday?

o.k. so in the manual there is a chart for the various size pools and the temperature range of your weather. You find the normal operating time for your saltwater generator in that manual and you run it every day once a day for that time. You can use the timer if you prefer. We manually turn it on out of preference. For example: our pool is an 18 x 52 and right now the temperature is about 89 so we run ours 6 hours everyday and the pump 8 hours. We turn the pump on manually and then five minutes later we turn on the salt water generator but yes you can put a timer on the pump too. In the beginning of set up. You have to make sure your pool is perfectly balanced first, put the salt in the pool, brush it all in, run pump for 24hrs and then run boost for 8x the normal operating time of your salt system. After that you are good to go. Does that answer any questions?

The instructions say that the boost cycle runs 8 times the amount you set the timer for. So you set it for 4 hours so that means you saltwater system will run for 8×4= 32hrs. You set you filter for 8hrs. So you filter will shut off before saltwater system does. Does that sound right?

Your pump gets set on FP When you're boosting so no matter how many hours you set your saltwater system to run on boost it should cut off before your pump does. On a daily basis we run our pump now for 8 hours and our saltwater system for 6 hours and I don't think we've ever had the boost after the initial setup with the exception of one time when we had a green pool scare

@@MoverandShaker i understand that. But you didn't state the FP mode before you did boost. You set the filter for 8 hrs. Then shortly after you did 4hrs on Saltwater system then boost for a total of 32 hours. The filter will go off before Saltwater system. Could damage Saltwater system.

Hey summer! The thing he is explaining (smaller one) is a salt water pump. It allows you to use pool salt and it turns it into chlorine but it’s not the main pump. The bigger one is a sand filter, it filters the pool through sand and pumps it really well! You don’t need the salt pump if you just regular chlorine/shock. You can just use the sand filter pump with store bought chlorine. We always had that but this year we decided to try to add the salt water pump because everyone says it’s lower in maintenance. And yes in our case we use our main sand filter pump to vacuum the pool and I would assume if you do the same you would need a pretty good pump to help you vacuum. I hope I helped you.

Your pump has to be strong enough to push the vacuum / cleaner no matter what brand or type you have. The Intex pool cleaner Requires a filter pump with a flow rate between 1,600 - 3,500 gph The other thing you see is our saltwater system (not a pump) it allows us to not have to use chemicals all summer long. Cheaper, less worries, safer etc...
