Thing about it is his show was always about entertainment rather than a hardcore reality experience. Techincally I believe Bear has the training to do most if not all the things in his shows (dude is ex military/SAS I think) but no production studio is gonna risk their star talent getting ill or hurt by making them do such extreme stuff for real. End of the day did we all find that shit entertaining? Yes. Does it really matter that some of it was fake/staged to make the show more sustainable? Honestly I don't think so.

Bear ain't no Cody Lundin, at least dual survival had the decency to say it was staged and the show was informing us on survival instructions. But now that he hasn't been apart of the show for quite a while he's gone back to having his survival classes again.
