I think on a deeper level, the issue a lot of people had with it, is that Disney was being lazy by not bothering to create an original character. For example, DC some time back announced they were making a black Superman movie. The problem was that they suggested the film would not revolve around Calvin Ellis or Val-Zod, the two canon alternate versions of Superman, but rather would re-tell Clark Kent's story.... except he'd be black- that is it. Meanwhile original characters like Icon, Mr. Terrific, Hardwire and Static Shock are busy gathering dust, and the only reason i knew he existed was thanks to the Young Justice show. Edit: That said, i doubt the movie will be anywhere near as bad as the Miles Morales Thor comic.

Some of the people that are upset at it is because of how they know that the story of the little mermaid was actually written back in like the 17 or 1800's if I'm right and was not a Disney creation. And in the original story, the author basically describes ariel as white with long flowing red hair and changing it up is kinda disrespecting the author and that's why some of the adults that grew up with the original little mermaid don't like it(not saying all or half). Having important black characters is great. Replacing existing characters with ones of different races or genders is idiotic. Not in all cases, but many. It’s pandering to the gender or race swapped to, and it’s insulting to the original character, historical figure, or (as in the case of Little Mermaid and Danish people) culture the story or character originated from. Truthfully, ppl wouldn’t care THAT much about this stuff if we hadn’t been berated with “that’s cultural appropriation” drama for ten years now. It also doesn’t help that ppl ignorantly seem to think literally everything originated from black culture and/or that “white people” have no culture. Erasure of entire histories can cause a bit of ruffled feathers. Danes, Vikings, Spaniards, Italians, Dutch, Swedes, French, English, Russians, Germans, etc , etc. VastLy different cultures. Just bc all of the major world powers and first world nations are white, doesn’t mean they are all one homogenous culture....without culture. So many people equate “culture” with melanin, which is the most ridiculous sentiment. Take a nation like no other (America) where anyone and everyone from any cultural background can be equally “American”, than pretend millions of said Americans “have no culture” and are “stealing other cultures”, than you’re gonna have people get touchy when characters are race swapped.
